Six To See week 34 (October 5-12)

This week a lot of amazing new films and series were released that this time you’re getting a double six to see with six new films to see and six new series. Enjoy!

Six films to see

  1. Dicks: The Musical: a new musical comedy film directed by Larry Charles, based on the off-Broadway musical Fucking Identical Twins by Josh Sharp and Aaron Jackson. It stars Josh Sharp, Aaron Jackson, Nathan Lane, Megan Mullally, Bowen Yang, Megan Thee Stallion, Tom Kenny, Frank Todaro, Sonya Eddy, Danielle Perez, Nick Offerman and D’Arcy Carden. In the film, we follow two business adversaries who realize they’re identical twin brothers and decide to switch places to reunite their divorced parents so they all can become an actual family again. This film is made by A24 and is the studio’s first musical film. The film had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last month and was released in theatres on October 6.
  1. The Royal Hotel: a new psychological thriller film directed by Kitty Green, who co-wrote the screenplay with Oscar Redding. It stars Julia Garner, Jessica Henwick, Toby Wallace, and Hugo Weaving. The film is inspired by the 2016 documentary Hotel Coolgardie by Pete Gleeson and follows two young backpackers, Hanna and Liv, who take jobs at The Royal Hotel, an Australian Outback bar ran by Billy. The film had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival, it also screened at the Toronto International Film Festival, and was released in theatres on October 6. This is one of the films I’ll go watch during Film Fest Gent later this month and is one of the six films you should see at the festival.   1. Totally Killer: a new comedy horror film directed by Nahnatchka Khan from a screenplay by David Matalon, Sasha Perl-Raver and Jen D’Angelo. It stars Kiernan Shipka, Olivia Holt, Julie Bowen, and Randall Park. We follow Jamie whose mother’s friends were murdered by the Sweet Sixteen Killer on Halloween in 1987. 35 years later the killer is back killing her mom and running after her. Jamie uses the time machine made by her best friend to travel back in time to 1987 where she pairs up with her mom and her friends to stop the young would-be-killer and get back to her timeline before she’s trapped in the past forever. Totally Killer premiered at Fantastic Fest last month and was released on Amazon Prime Video on October 6. This is an amazing film to watch with Halloween coming up. I’ve seen it and really loved it, it’s a totally killer film!
  1. Down Low: a new comedy film directed by Rightor Doyle, from a screenplay by Lukas Gage and Phoebe Fisher. It stars Zachary Quinto, Lukas Gage, Simon Rex, Audra McDonald, and Judith Light. We follow an unlikely friendship between a repressed middle-aged gay man and a young masseur, and all the lives they ruin along the way. The film had its world premiere at South by Southwest earlier this year and was released in theatres on October 10.
  1. Cat Person: a new black comedy psychological thriller film directed by Susanna Fogel from a screenplay by Michelle Ashford, based on the 2017 short story of the same name by Kristen Roupenian. The film stars Emilia Jones, Nicholas Braun, Geraldine Viswanathan, Hope Davis, Fred Melamed, and Isabella Rossellini. It follows college student Margot who has a brief relationship with Robert, an older man who frequently visits the movie theater where she works. Things get dark when Margot is not interested in continuing the relationship with Robert. Cat Person premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and was released in theatres on October 6.
  1. She Came to Me: a new romantic comedy film written and directed by Rebecca Miller. It stars Peter Dinklage, Marisa Tomei, Joanna Kulig, Brian d’Arcy James, Anne Hathaway, Harlow Jane and Evan Ellison. It follows composer Steven Lauddem who is creatively blocked and unable to finish the score for his big comeback opera. At the behest of his wife Patricia, he sets out in search of inspiration. The film had its world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival and was released in theatres on October 6.

Six series to see

  1. Loki season 2: the second season of the superhero series created by Michael Waldron and based on Marvel Comics featuring the character of the same name. Tom Hiddleston reprises his role as Loki, alongside Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Wunmi Mosaku, Eugene Cordero, Tara Strong, Owen Wilson, Sophia Di Martino, Jonathan Majors, and Neil Ellice. Rafael Casal, Kate Dickie, Liz Carr, and Ke Huy Quan are joining this second season that starts where season 1 ended. After the first season ends with the timeline breaking and the creation of a multiverse, the second season shows Loki teaming up with Mobius M. Mobius, Hunter B-15, and other TVA agents in a battle for the soul of the TVA. This includes a search through the multiverse for Sylvie, Ravonna Renslayer, and Miss Minutes. The second season of the series premiered on Disney+ on October 6 with a new episode releasing weekly. The first episode was already great and a crazy ride, so I look forward to the rest.
  1. Everything Now: a new British teen comedy-drama series created by Ripley Parker and starring Sophie Wilde in the lead role as Mia, a 16-year-old girl from London who rejoins sixth form after a hospital stay due to anorexia nervosa. If you’re a fan of Heartstopper and Sex Education, you will also love this series. Also starring in the series are Lauryn Ajufo, Jessie Mae Alonzo, Harry Cadby, Noah Thomas, Robert Akodoto, Vivienne Acheampong, Alex Hassell, Sam Reuben, Niamh McCormack and Stephen Fry. The series was released on Netflix on October 5.
  1. Lupin Part 3: the third part of the French mystery thriller series created by George Kay who produced it with François Uzan. Omar Sy is back as gentleman thief Assane Diop who is inspired by the adventures of Arsène Lupin. Also starring in the series are Ludivine Sagnier, Etan Simon, Antoine Gouy, Soufiane Guerrab, Shirine Boutella. We follow Assane Diop again who, at the end of part 2, has cleared his name of murder, as well as getting justice for his late father. But that wasn’t enough to wipe the slate clean after a spate of high-profile heists, with the police still determined to catch him. In this third part of the series he is in hiding and will have to try to stay out of police hands having become France’s most wanted man all while trying to stay a thief and learn to live far from his wife and son. Part 3 of the series was released on Netflix October 5.
  1. The Fall of the House Usher: a new gothic horror drama miniseries created by Mike Flanagan which is loosely based on the short story of the same name and other works by Edgar Allan Poe. It follows the CEO of a corrupt pharmaceutical company who faces his questionable past when his children start dying in mysterious and brutal ways. Starring in the miniseries are Carla Gugino, Bruce Greenwood, Zach Gilford, Mary McDonnell, Willa Fitzgerald, Carl Lumbly, Malcolm Goodwin, Samantha Sloyan, T’Nia Miller, Rahul Kohli, Kate Siegel, and Mark Hamill. The miniseries was released on Netflix on October 12.
  1. Doom Patrol the final episodes: the final episodes of Doom Patrol are finally coming and we got a first trailer with the release date for it. This second part of season 4 of the DC superhero series, developed by Jeremy Carver, is based on the DC Comics superhero team of the same name. Our members of the Doom Patrol are all back which include Jane (Diane Guerrero), Rita Farr (April Bowlby), Vic Stone (Joivan Wade), Larry Trainor (Matt Bomer / Matthew Zuk), Cliff Steele (Brendan Fraser / Riley Shanahan), and Madame Rouge (Michelle Gomez). We will follow our heroes from the Doom Patrol one more time while they have to work together once more to save the world from Immortus and the Buttpocalypse. After having to wait a while for this second part (the first part concluded in January this year) this second part, which is the very last one, is premiering on HBO Max in the US on October 12 with the first two episodes, and the rest releasing weekly until the series concludes on November 9. In Belgium the episodes are being released on Streamz.
  1. Our Flag Means Death season 2: the second season of the period romantic comedy series created by David Jenkins. Set in the early 18th century during the Golden Age of Piracy, the series follows the misadventures of gentleman-turned-pirate Stede Bonnet and his crew aboard the Revenge as they try to make a name for themselves as pirates and cross paths with famed pirate captain Blackbeard. Starring in the series are Rhys Darby, Taika Waititi, Ewen Bremner, Joel Fry, Samson Kayo, Nathan Foad, Vico Ortiz, Matthew Maher, Con O’Neill, David Fane, and Samba Schutte. Season 2 of the series premiered on HBO Max on October 5 with the first three episodes and the season concluding on October 26 when the last episode of the season is being released.
