Six To See Halloween special

It’s Friday the 13th, so the perfect day to do a special Halloween edition of Six To See. Here are six scary films that were released this year that you should see during this spooky season.

  • Talk To Me: a supernatural horror film directed by Danny and Michael Philippou, in their feature directorial debut, and written by Danny Philippou and Bill Hinzman from a concept by Daley Pearson. The film follows Mia, played by Sophie Wilde, a young woman who becomes embroiled with the supernatural following a séance with an embalmed hand. Also starring are Joe Bird, Alexandra Jensen, Otis Dhanji, Miranda Otto, Marcus Johnson, and Alexandria Steffensen. The film had its preview screening at the 2022 Adelaide Film Festival, followed by its world premiere at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. The film was released in theatres on July 27 and was one of the big films from this summer. If you haven’t seen the film, now is the perfect time. The film is still being screened in several theatres or you can rent or buy it on several streaming services like Prime Video and Apple TV+.
  • M3GAN: this science fiction horror film directed by Gerard Johnstone follows the eponymous artificially intelligent doll named Megan who develops self-awareness and becomes hostile to anyone who comes between her and her human companion, Cady. Cady’s aunt Gemma, who is a roboticist, made that robot or doll which is designed to be a loyal companion to the child, but things start to get weird and creepy. The film stars Allison Williams and Violet McGraw, with Amie Donald physically portraying M3GAN and Jenna Davis voicing the character. M3GAN was released in theatres on January 6, at the very start of the year and was one of the first big films this year. Now is the perfect time to watch M3GAN if you haven’t yet. It’s on Netflix and/or on Prime Video in several countries or you can also rent or buy it on several streaming services like Apple TV+ and VUDU.
  • Scream VI: the sequel to Scream from 2022 and the sixth installment in the Scream film series. It’s directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett and written by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick. The film stars Melissa Barrera, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding, Jenna Ortega, Hayden Panettiere, and Courteney Cox, all reprising their roles from previous installments, alongside Jack Champion, Henry Czerny, Liana Liberato, Dermot Mulroney, Devyn Nekoda, Tony Revolori, Josh Segarra, and Samara Weaving joining them. Film star Neve Campbell announced she would not be returning as Sidney Prescott because she felt the offer presented to her was unacceptable, making this the first film in the series not to feature the character. This is the third film of the series to be set outside the fictional town of Woodsboro, California, with the film’s events taking place in New York City and following a new Ghostface who targets the surviving members of the “Woodsboro legacy attacks”. The film combines the violence of the slasher genre with elements of black comedy and a “whodunit” mystery, and satirizes the trends of film franchises and subversion of audience expectations. The film was released in theatres on March 10. The film from last year is a good one to watch together with this one.   • Knock At The Cabin: an apocalyptic psychological horror film written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan, who wrote the screenplay from an initial draft by Steve Desmond and Michael Sherman. It is based on the 2018 novel The Cabin at the End of the World by Paul G. Tremblay, the first adaptation of one of his works. The film stars Dave Bautista, Jonathan Groff, Ben Aldridge, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Kristen Cui, Abby Quinn and Rupert Grint. Director  M. Night Shyamalan also has a small cameo in the film which follows a family of three who are vacationing at a remote cabin. They are suddenly held hostage by four strangers, who demand they sacrifice one of their own to avert the apocalypse. The film was released in theatres on February 3 and is available on Netflix in several countries or you can also rent or buy it on other streaming services like Prime Video and Apple TV+.
  • Infinity Pool: a science fiction horror film written and directed by Brandon Cronenberg. It is an international co-production starring Alexander Skarsgård, Mia Goth, Cleopatra Coleman, Jalil Lespert, and Amanda Brugel. It follows novelist James Foster and his wife Em who are staying at an isolated island resort, enjoying a perfect vacation of pristine beaches, exceptional staff, and soaking up the sun. But guided by the seductive and mysterious Gabi, they venture outside the resort grounds and find themselves in a culture filled with violence, hedonism, and untold horror. A tragic accident leaves them facing a zero tolerance policy for crime: either you’ll be executed or, if you’re rich enough to afford it, you can watch yourself die instead. Infinity Pool premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival on January 22 and was released in theatres on January 27. This is another film that was released early in the year and a great one to watch again this time of year. You can rent or buy the film on several streaming services like Prime Video and Apple TV+.
  • Evil Dead Rise: a supernatural horror film written and directed by Lee Cronin. This is the fifth installment in the Evil Dead film series and stars Lily Sullivan and Alyssa Sutherland in the lead roles as Beth and Ellie, two estranged sisters trying to survive and save their family from deadites. Morgan Davies, Gabrielle Echols, and Nell Fisher (in her film debut) also star in the film. Bruce Campbell, who is know for his role as Ash Williams in this franchise, is featured in an uncredited voice-only cameo role heard in a recording on one of the phonograph records from 1923. He also voices an unnamed character who forewarns the priests to the dangers of the demon resurrection ritual, and demands they destroy the book. Writer-director Lee Cronin stated that he had Campbell voice this role intentionally, stating that he considers it to be a time-displaced Ash Williams. People who are fans of the franchise, will also love this one. The film was released in theatres on April 21 and you can rent or buy it on several streaming services like Prime Video and Apple TV+.
