- Wonka: the new musical fantasy film directed by Paul King, who co-wrote the screenplay with Simon Farnaby. It serves as a prequel to the 1971 film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory which was based on the 1964 novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. The film stars Timothée Chalamet in the titular role of Willy Wonka, following his early days as an unusual chocolatier. Also starring are Calah Lane, Keegan-Michael Key, Paterson Joseph, Matt Lucas, Mathew Baynton, Sally Hawkins, Rowan Atkinson, Jim Carter, Tom Davis, Olivia Colman and Hugh Grant. The film is releasing in theatres on December 15.
- Orphan Black: Echoes: we got a first teaser for this science fiction thriller series created by Anna Fishko which is based on the original series Orphan Black created by John Fawcett and Graeme Manson. The series stars Krysten Ritter in the lead role as Lucy, a woman who has undergone a procedure and has no memory of who she is. The series is set in 2052 in the same universe as Orphan Black and follows Lucy who might be a clone and tries to find out the truth. Also starring in the series are Keeley Hawes, Amanda Fix, Avan Jogia, Rya Kihlstedt, James Hiroyuki Liao, and Reed Diamond. The series is set to premiere in 2024 on AMC, AMC+ and BBC America.
- The Curse: a new comedy series created and written by Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie who also both star in the series alongside Emma Stone, Corbin Bernsen, Barkhad Abdi, Constance Shulman, Dahabo Ahmed, and Gary Farmer. The series explores how an alleged curse disturbs the relationship of a newly married couple as they try to conceive a child while co-starring on their problematic new HGTV show, Flipanthropy. The first three episodes of the series premiered at the New York Film Festivalearlier this month. The series will premiere on streaming and on-demand for all Showtime and Paramount+ with Showtime subscribers on November 10, before making its on-air debut on Showtime on November 12.
- Monarch: Legacy of Monsters: the new action adventure sci-fi series created by Chris Black based on Godzilla by Toho Co., Ltd. This is the sixth installment and the second television series in the MonsterVerse franchise. The series follows members of the organization Monarch as they encounter Godzilla and other monsters, known as ‘Titans’, over the span of a half century, following the events of Godzilla (2014). The series stars Kurt Russell, Wyatt Russell, Anna Sawai, Kiersey Clemons, Ren Watabe, Mari Yamamoto, Anders Holm, Joe Tippett and Elisa Lasowski. Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is premiering on Apple TV+ on November 17.
- Invincible season 2: the second season of the adult animated superhero series created by Robert Kirkman. Based on the Image Comics series of the same name by Robert Kirkman, Cory Walker and Ryan Ottley, the show follows 17-year-old Mark Grayson and his transformation into a superhero. During his transformation, Mark finds himself struggling between his personal life and superhero duties, where he will be forced to prove that he can be the hero that his father is and was. The series stars Steven Yeun, Sandra Oh, and J. K. Simmons as the Grayson family with a whole ensemble cast also being back in this second season including Gillian Jacobs, Zazie Beetz, Walton Goggins, Jason Mantzoukas, Khary Payton, and Seth Rogen. They are also joined by new cast members including Rhea Seehorn, Sterling K. Brown, Lea Thompson, and Ben Schwartz. The first half of the second season is premiering on Amazon Prime Video on November 3 with the latter half set to debut in early 2024. There is also a third season coming.
- American Fiction: a new satirical comedy drama film written and directed by Cord Jefferson, in his feature directorial debut. It is based on the 2001 novel Erasure by Percival Everett and stars Jeffrey Wright, Tracee Ellis Ross, Issa Rae, and Sterling K. Brown. We follow Monk, a frustrated novelist who’s fed up with the establishment profiting from ‘Black’ entertainment that relies on tired and offensive tropes. To prove his point, Monk uses a pen name to write an outlandish ‘Black’ book of his own, a book that propels him to the heart of hypocrisy and the madness he claims to disdain. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last month, where it won the People’s Choice Award, and is releasing in limited theatres on December 15 with an expansion on December 22.
- Napoleon: the epic historical drama film directed and produced by Ridley Scott and written by David Scarpa. Based on the true story of Napoleon Bonaparte, the film is primarily depicting the French leader’s rise to power as well as his relationship with Empress Joséphine. It stars Joaquin Phoenix (who is also a producer) as Napoleon, alongside Vanessa Kirby, Tahar Rahim, Ben Miles, Ludivine Sagnier, Matthew Needham, Youssef Kerkour, Phil Cornwell, and Rupert Everett. Napoleon is releasing in theatres on November 22 before streaming on Apple TV+ at a later date.
- Ferrari: the biographical drama sports thriller film directed by Michael Mann and written by Troy Kennedy Martin about Enzo Ferrari, the Italian founder of the car manufacturer Ferrari. It is based on the 1991 biography Enzo Ferrari: The Man and the Machine by motorsport journalist Brock Yates. It stars Adam Driver in the lead role as Enzo Ferrari alongside Penelope Cruz, Shailene Woodley, Gabriel Leone, Sarah Gardon, Jack O’Connell and Patrick Dempsey. The film was selected to compete for the Golden Lion at the Venice International Film Festival, where it premiered on August 31, and it’s releasing in theatres on December 25. It was also shown at Film Fest Gent last weekend where I already saw the movie. It was really well done and it’s a film you have to see. Adam Driver once again shows how good of an actor he is. And Penelope Cruz and Shailene Woodley are also amazing in the film. So put it in your calendar and go watch Ferrari in theatres on Christmas Day.
- The Boys in the Boat: a new biographical sports drama film co-produced and directed by George Clooney from a screenplay by Mark L. Smith, based on the 2013 book of the same name by Daniel James Brown. The film stars Callum Turner and Joel Edgerton. The film follows the University of Washington crew that represented the United States in the Men’s eight at the 1936 Summer Olympic games in Berlin, including the coaches, boatbuilder George Pocock, and the working class student athletes involved, especially rower Joe Rantz, who was effectively abandoned by his family and left to fend for himself at a young age. The Boys in the Boat is releasing in theatres on December 25.
- Rustin: a new biographical drama film directed by George C. Wolfe with a screenplay by Julian Breece and Dustin Lance Black from a story by Breece. Produced by Barack and Michelle Obama’s production company Higher Ground Productions, the film revolves around the life of gay civil rights activist Bayard Rustin, who helped Martin Luther King Jr. and others organize the 1963 March on Washington. It stars Colman Domingo in the title role, alongside Chris Rock, Glynn Turman, Aml Ameen, CCH Pounder, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Michael Potts, Bill Irwin, Jeffrey Wright and Audra McDonald. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last month and is later scheduled to be released in theaters on November 3, and to premiere on Netflix on November 17.
- Saltburn: a new psychological thriller drama film written, directed and produced by Emerald Fennell. It stars Barry Keoghan, Jacob Elordi, Rosamund Pike, Richard E. Grant, Alison Oliver, Archie Madekwe and Carey Mulligan. Set in the mid-2000s, it follows a young college student who becomes infatuated with his aristocratic schoolmate and his wealthy but eccentric family. Saltburn had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival on August 31 and is releasing in limited theatres on November 24 before expanding wide on December 1.
