Pain Hustlers: a new crime drama film directed by David Yates from a screenplay by Wells Tower. It is based on the 2022 book of the same name by Evan Hughes. The film stars Emily Blunt, Chris Evans, Andy García, Catherine O’Hara, Jay Duplass, Brian d’Arcy James, and Chloe Coleman. It centers on a high school dropout who lands a job with a failing pharmaceutical company in Central Florida, where she soon finds herself at the center of a criminal conspiracy. Pain Hustlers had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last month and was released in select theaters on October 20, before streaming on Netflix on October 27.
Five Nights at Freddy’s: a new supernatural horror film directed by Emma Tammi from a screenplay she co-wrote with Scott Cawthon and Seth Cuddeback. It’s based on the video game franchise of the same name created by Cawthon, who also serves as producer with Jason Blum. The film stars Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Lail, Piper Rubio and Matthew Lillard. It follows Mike Schmidt, a troubled security guard who accepts a night-time job at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, a once-successful but now abandoned family entertainment center. There he discovers its four animatronic mascots – Freddy Fazbear, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy – move and kill anyone that is still there after midnight. The film was released simultaneously in theaters and on Peacock in the United States on October 27. The film itself is not one of the best films released this year, but it has been doing well at the box office. It was released at the perfect time with Halloween that happened this week, so a lot of people went to see the film in theatres.
All the Light We Cannot See: a new drama limited series directed by Shawn Levy, based on Anthony Doerr’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel of the same name. It stars Aria Mia Loberti, Mark Ruffalo and Hugh Laurie. The four-part series follows the stories of a blind French teen girl named Marie-Laure and a German soldier named Werner, whose paths cross in occupied France during World War II. The limited series was released on Netflix on November 2.
Fellow Travelers: a new historical romance political thriller miniseries based on the 2007 fictional novel of the same name by Thomas Mallon. Starring Matt Bomer and Jonathan Bailey in the lead roles, it centers on the decades-long romance between two men who first meet during the height of McCarthyism in the 1950s. The series premiered on Showtime on October 27 with a new episode releasing weekly.
The Gilded Age season 2: the second season of the historical drama series created and written by Julian Fellowes. It’s set in the United States during the Gilded Age, the boom years of the 1880s in New York City. It stars an ensemble cast which includes Carrie Coon, Morgan Spector, Louisa Jacobson, Denée Benton, Taissa Farmiga, Harry Richardson, and Blake Ritson. The series follows a young woman entering 1882 New York City’s rigid social scene. She is drawn into the daily conflicts surrounding the Russell family and the established van Rhijn-Brook family, who are neighbors across 61st Street near Fifth Avenue on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. The series also shows conflicts faced by the upper and upper middle classes, the Black upper class, and the domestic workers who tend to all of their needs. Season 2 of the series premiered on HBO on October 29 with a new episode releasing weekly.
Wingwomen: a new French action comedy crime film directed by Mélanie Laurent who also stars in the film alongside Adèle Exarchopoulos, Manon Bresch and Isabelle Adjani. Titled Voleuses in French, the film follows pro thief Carole who is tired of life on the run and wants to retire. But not before she has to do one last job. Together with her partner in crime and best friend Alex and rookie getaway driver Sam, the three women go on one seemingly simple last job unlike any they’ve done before. The film was released on Netflix on November 1.
