Six To See week 37 (Nov 3-9)

  1. Quiz Lady: a new comedy film directed by Jessica Yu and written by Jen D’Angelo. The film stars Sandra Oh, Awkwafina, Jason Schwartzman, Tony Hale, Holland Taylor, and Will Ferrell. Will Ferrell, Awkwafina, and Sandra Oh also serve as the film’s producers, along with Jessica Elbaum, Maggie Haskins, Itay Reiss, and D’Angelo. The film follows Anne, a tightly wound, game show-obsessed woman, who must come together with her chaotic sister Jenny in order to help pay off their mother’s gambling debts. When Anne’s beloved dog is kidnapped, they will have to set off on a cross-country journey in order to get the money they need. In order to do so, they will have to tap into Anne’s skill set by turning her into the game show champion she was always meant to be. Quiz Lady premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and was released on Hulu in the US and on Disney+ internationally on November 3.
  1. Nyad: a new biographical sports drama film directed by Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin, from a screenplay written by Julia Cox. It stars Annette Bening as swimmer Diana Nyad, alongside Jodie Foster and Rhys Ifans. The film is Vasarhelyi and Chin’s narrative feature directorial debut and is based on Nyad’s autobiography Find a Way. The film tells the remarkable true story of athlete Diana Nyad who, at the age of 60 and with the help of her best friend and coach, commits to achieving her life-long dream: a 110-mile open ocean swim from Cuba to Florida, often referred to as the ‘Mount Everest’ of swims. Determined to become the first person to finish the swim without a shark cage, Nyad goes on a thrilling, four-year journey with her best friend and coach Bonnie Stoll and a dedicated sailing team. The film had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival and was released in select theaters on October 20, before streaming on Netflix on November 3.
  1. Invincible season 2: the second season of the adult animated superhero series created by Robert Kirkman. Based on the Image Comics series of the same name by Robert Kirkman, Cory Walker and Ryan Ottley, the show follows 17-year-old Mark Grayson and his transformation into a superhero. During his transformation, Mark finds himself struggling between his personal life and superhero duties, where he will be forced to prove that he can be the hero that his father is and was. The series stars Steven Yeun, Sandra Oh, and J. K. Simmons as the Grayson family with a whole ensemble cast also being back in this second season including Gillian Jacobs, Zazie Beetz, Walton Goggins, Jason Mantzoukas, Khary Payton, and Seth Rogen. They are also joined by new cast members including Rhea Seehorn, Sterling K. Brown, Lea Thompson, and Ben Schwartz. The first half of the second season premiered on Amazon Prime Video on November 3 with the latter half set to debut in early 2024. There is also a third season coming.
  1. Fingernails: a new science fiction romance film written and directed by Christos Nikou. The film stars Jessie Buckley, Riz Ahmed, Jeremy Allen White, Annie Murphy and Luke Wilson. It follows Anna, a woman who is in a relationship with Ryan. They have found true love which is proven by a controversial new technology. There’s just one problem, as Anna still isn’t sure. So she begins working at an institute that works to determine if the romance in a given couple is genuine, where she meets Amir. The film premiered at the Telluride Film Festival and was released in limited theaters on October 27 before streaming on Apple TV+ on November 3.
  1. The Marsh King’s Daughter: a new psychological thriller film directed by Neil Burger and written by Elle Smith and Mark L. Smith, based on the 2017 novel of the same name by Karen Dionne. It stars Daisy Ridley, Ben Mendelsohn, Garrett Hedlund, Caren Pistorius, Brooklynn Prince, and Gil Birmingham. It follows Helena, a young mother who is forced to confront her long-buried past as the child of a vicious kidnapper and the girl he held captive for twelve years when her father breaks out of prison. Convinced that he intends to take her daughters, she sets out to track down and kill him herself. The film was released in theatres on November 3.
  1. The Buccaneers: a new British period drama series written by Katherine Jakeways, based on the unfinished novel of the same name by American novelist Edith Wharton, published posthumously in 1938. It stars Kristine Froseth, Alisha Boe, Josie Totah, Aubri Ibrag, Imogen Waterhouse, Mia Threapleton, Christina Hendricks and Josh Dylan. Set in 1870s London, we follow a group of American women who arrive into London society which results in a culture clash, with two differing approaches to tradition.The series premiered on Apple TV+ on November 8 with the three first episodes and the rest releasing weekly.
