Leave the World Behind: a new psychological thriller film written, directed and produced by Sam Esmail. It is based on the 2020 novel of the same name by Rumaan Alam. The film stars Julia Roberts (who also produced the film), Mahershala Ali, Ethan Hawke, Myha’la, and Kevin Bacon. It follows a family whose vacation on Long Island is interrupted by two strangers bearing news of a mysterious blackout. As the threat grows more imminent, both families must decide how best to survive the potential crisis, all while grappling with their own place in this collapsing world. The film had its world premiere at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre on October 25 and was released in limited theaters on November 22 followed by streaming on Netflix on December 8.
May December: a romantic drama film directed by Todd Haynes from a screenplay by Samy Burch. It is loosely inspired by the story of Mary Kay Letourneau. Starring in the film are Natalie Portman, Julianne Moore, Charles Melton, D. W. Moffett, Piper Curda, Elizabeth Yu, Gabriel Chung, Cory Michael Smith, and Lawrence Arancio. It follows an actress who travels to Georgia to meet and study the life of the woman she is set to play in a film. May December premiered at the Cannes Film Festival where it was competing for the Palme d’Or. The film was released in select theaters on November 17, before streaming on Netflix on December 1 in the US and Canada. In several countries like the Netherlands and the United Kingdom the film is out in theatres now, to be it on Netflix in other countries than the US and Canada we have to wait some more.
Silent Night: a new action thriller film directed by John Woo and written by Robert Archer Lynn. The film stars Joel Kinnaman, Scott Mescudi, Harold Torres and Catalina Sandino Moreno. It is John Woo’s first American feature film since Paycheck (2003) and features no dialogue. In the film, we follow a tormented father who witnesses his young son die when caught in a gang’s crossfire on Christmas Eve. While recovering from a wound that costs him his voice, he makes vengeance his life’s mission and embarks on a punishing training regimen in order to avenge his son’s death. The film was released in theatres on December 1.
Candy Cane Lane: a new Christmas comedy film directed by Reginald Hudlin and written by Kelly Younger. The film stars Eddie Murphy, Tracee Ellis Ross, Robin Thede, Nick Offerman, Chris Redd, and Jillian Bell. It follows Chris Carver and his family whose local neighborhood hosts an annual contest over who has the best decorated home for Christmas. Desperate to win, Chris makes a deal with a charismatic stranger, Pepper, for the use of magic to make his home the most festive. He soon learns that Pepper is an evil elf who has made similar deals in the past, with her victims being transformed into plastic dolls. Chris must rally his family to stop Pepper from unleashing misery upon his friends and neighbors and break the deal before he loses everything. The film was released on Amazon Prime Video on December 1.
Eileen: a new psychological thriller film directed by William Oldroyd and starring Thomasin McKenzie, Shea Whigham, Marin Ireland, Owen Teague and Anne Hathaway. It is based on the eponymous 2015 novel by Ottessa Moshfegh who adapted it with her husband Luke Goebel. Set in 1960s Boston, the film trails a parasitic relationship between two women working at a juvenile detention facility. Eileen premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. The film was released in limited theatres on December 1, before expanding wide on December 8.
My Life With the Walter Boys: a new coming-of-age drama series created by Melanie Halsall who co-wrote it with Ali Novak. It is an adaptation of Ali Novak’s 2014 novel of the same name. The series follows recently-orphaned Jackie Howard, played by Nikki Rodriguez, a teenage girl from Manhattan who relocates to rural Colorado after she is taken in by the Walters, a family of ten sons. Also starring in the series are Ashby Gentry, Noah LaLonde, Marc Blucas, Alisha Newton, and Sarah Rafferty. The series was released on Netflix on December 7.
