New trailers week 42 (December 9-15)

  • The Color Purple: the upcoming musical coming-of-age period drama film directed by Blitz Bazawule from a screenplay by Marcus Gardley, based on the stage musical of the same name, which in turn is based on the 1982 novel of the same name by Alice Walker. It is the second film adaptation of the novel, following the 1985 film directed by Steven Spielberg. He returned to produce this version with Quincy Jones, along with the stage musical’s producers Scott Sanders and Oprah Winfrey, the latter of whom also starred in the 1985 film as Sofia. The film stars Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks, Colman Domingo, Corey Hawkins, H.E.R., Halle Bailey, Phylicia Pearl Mpasi, and Fantasia Barrino in her film debut. Fantasia Barrino and Danielle Brooks both reprise their roles from productions of the stage musical. The film tells the story of the life-long struggles of an African American woman living in the south during the early 1900s. The Color Purple is releasing in theatres on December 25.
  • Sunrise: an upcoming vampire horror film directed by Andrew Baird from a screenplay by Ronan Blaney. It is starring Guy Pearce and Alex Pettyfer, who also produces, alongside Martin Brennan and Jib Polhemus. It is set in a rural town which plagued by a vampire. Sunrise is releasing in theatres and will be available digitally on January 19, 2024.
  • Dune Part 2: the second part of the film Dune with the first part that was released in 2021. This is the third trailer that was released for the film that was supposed to be released earlier this year in November, but was postponed to next year. This epic science fiction film is directed by Denis Villeneuve, who co-wrote the screenplay with Jon Spaihts. This is the second of a two-part adaptation of the 1965 novel Dune by Frank Herbert. Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Dave Bautista, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Stellan Skarsgård, Charlotte Rampling, and Javier Bardem reprise their roles from the first film, with Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Christopher Walken and Léa Seydoux joining the ensemble cast. Dune Part 2 is releasing in theatres on March 1.
  • Civil War: a new epic action war film written and directed by Alex Garland. The film stars Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Cailee Spaeny, Jesse Plemons, and Nick Offerman. It’s set in the near future with The United States standing on the brink of civil war. The film is releasing in theatres on April 26, 2024.
  • Miller’s Girl: a new drama film written and directed by Jade Halley Bartlett. The film stars Jenna Ortega and Martin Freeman in the lead roles as Cairo and Jonathan, a student and teacher who enter a dark relationship after a creative writing assignment. Also starring in the film are Gideon Adlon, Bashir Salahuddin, Dagmara Domińczyk, and Christine Adams. The film is releasing in theatres on January 26, 2024.
  • Kung Fu Panda 4: Po is back in this sequel to Kung Fu Panda 3 (2016). This film is the fourth animated martial arts comedy film in the Kung Fu Panda franchise. Directed by Mike Mitchell and co-directed by Stephanie Ma Stine, the film features Jack Black, Dustin Hoffman, James Hong, Bryan Cranston, and Ian McShane reprising their roles from the previous films, joined by Awkwafina, Viola Davis, and Ke Huy Quan. We follow Po who is gearing up to become the Spiritual Leader of the Valley of Peace, so he needs someone to take his place as Dragon Warrior. As such, he will train a new kung fu practitioner for the spot and will encounter a new foe called the Chameleon. The film is releasing in theatres on March 8, 2024.
  • Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F: Besides Kung Fu Panda being back with a fourth film, we also have Eddie Murphy who is back with a fourth Beverly Hills Cop film. This action comedy film is directed by Mark Molloy, written by Will Beall, Tom Gormican and Kevin Etten, from a story by Beall. This is the fourth installment in the Beverly Hills Cop film series with Eddie Murphy reprising his role as Axel Foley, a street-smart police lieutenant from Detroit, Michigan, who frequently traveled to Beverly Hills to investigate crimes that previously had mutual colleagues or friends of his wounded or killed. In this one Axel Foley returns to Beverly Hills to investigate corruption within the Beverly Hills Police Department with his estranged daughter and her ex-boyfriend. The film is releasing on Netflix in the summer of 2024.
  • IF: a new live action/animated fantasy comedy film written, directed, and co-produced by John Krasinski. The film features an ensemble cast led by Ryan Reynolds, John Krasinski, Cailey Fleming, Fiona Shaw, and Louis Gossett Jr., along with the voices of Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Steve Carell, Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, and Maya Rudolph. The film follows a young girl who discovers she has an ability to see people’s imaginary friends who have been abandoned by the kids they helped. IF is releasing in theatres on May 17, 2024.
