- He Went That Way: a new true-crime thriller film directed by Jeffrey Darling in his directorial debut. It is based on the non-fiction book Luke Karamazov by Conrad Hilberry and stars Jacob Elordi and Zachary Quinto in the lead roles. It is inspired by real life events involving serial killer Larry Lee Ranes and follows Jim Goodwin, an animal trainer accompanied by his pet chimpanzee, who picks up a hitchhiker later revealed to be a serial killer. The film had its world premiere at the Tribeca Festival earlier this year and is releasing in theatres on January 5, 2024.
- The American Society of Magical Negroes: an upcoming American satirical fantasy comedy film written, directed, and co-produced by Kobi Libii. It stars Justice Smith, David Alan Grier, An-Li Bogan, Drew Tarver, Michaela Watkins, Aisha Hinds, Tim Baltz, Rupert Friend and Nicole Byer. The film is a satire of the Magical Negro trope. Protagonist Aren is recruited into a magical society of African-Americans to follow their lifelong cause: to make the lives of white people easier. The film is scheduled to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January next year followed by a theatrical release on March 22, 2024.
- Origin: the new biographical drama film written and directed by Ava DuVernay. It is based on Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents by Isabel Wilkerson. It stars Aunjanue Ellis in the lead role as Wilkerson, alongside Jon Bernthal, Vera Farmiga, Audra McDonald, Niecy Nash-Betts, Nick Offerman, and Blair Underwood. Origin was selected to compete for the Golden Lion at the 80th Venice International Film Festival, where it premiered on September 6, 2023. It already had a limited theatrical release on December 8, and is set to expand to a wide release on January 19, 2024. Here in Belgium it will premiere at Filmfestival Oostende where I’ll be seeing the film.
- Expats: a new drama series created by Lulu Wang based on the 2016 novel The Expatriates by Janice Y. K. Lee. It stars Nicole Kidman, Ji-young Yoo, Jack Huston, Sarayu Blue, Brian Tee, and Flora Chan and follows the vibrant lives of a close-knit expatriate community where affluence is celebrated, friendships are intense but knowingly temporary, and personal lives, deaths and marriages are played out publicly – then retold with glee. The series is premiering on Amazon Prime Video on January 26, 2024.
- Love Lies Bleeding: an upcoming romantic thriller film directed by Rose Glass from a screenplay she co-wrote with Weronika Tofilska. It stars Kristen Stewart as a gym employee and Katy O’Brian as a bisexual bodybuilder. The film also stars Jena Malone, Anna Baryshnikov, Dave Franco and Ed Harris. The film will have its world premiere in the Midnight section at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival and will be released in theatres on March 8, 2024.
- The Kitchen: a new British science fiction drama film directed by Kibwe Tavares and Daniel Kaluuya. The film stars Kane Robinson, Jedaiah Bannerman, Hope Ikpoku Jr, Teija Kabs, Demmy Ladipo, Cristale, and BackRoad Gee. Set in a dystopian future London where all social housing has been eliminated, we follow Izi and Benji who fight to navigate the world as residents of The Kitchen, a community that refuses to abandon their home. The Kitchen had its world premiere at the 67th BFI London Film Festival earlier this year and is scheduled to be released on Netflix on 12 January 2024.
- White Bird: an upcoming American coming-of-age period drama film directed by Marc Forster from a screenplay by Mark Bomback, based on the 2019 graphic novel of the same name by R. J. Palacio. A spin-off and prequel to Wonder (2017), the film stars Ariella Glaser, Orlando Schwerdt, Bryce Gheisar, Gillian Anderson and Helen Mirren, with Gheisar reprising his role as Julian from Wonder. After the events of Wonder, Julian has left Beecher Prep for good. He is visited by his grandmother from Paris, who tells him stories of her childhood as a young Jewish girl in Nazi-occupied France during World War II, while being hidden from the Nazis by a distant classmate and his parents. The film is releasing in theaters on October 4, 2024.
- The Regime: an upcoming miniseries starring Kate Winslet, Martha Plimpton, Andrea Riseborough, Matthias Schoenaerts and Hugh Grant. Will Tracy is writer, executive producer and showrunner on the series with Stephen Frears and Jessica Hobbs directing episodes and executive producing. Kate Winslet, Frank Rich and Tracey Seaward are also executive producers. The series depicts a year within the palace of a crumbling authoritarian regime with Kate Winslet in the lead role as the Chancellor of a fictional Central European autocracy, who finds her position threatened by domestic turmoil. The Regime will premiere on HBO on March 3, 2024.
- Land of Bad: a new action thriller film directed by William Eubank, who co-wrote the script with David Frigerio. The film stars Liam Hemsworth, Russell Crowe, Luke Hemsworth, Ricky Whittle, and Milo Ventimiglia. It follows Reaper, a USAF drone pilot, who provides air support from a General Atomics MQ-9 Reaper to a US Army Delta Force team on the ground in the Philippines. After a mishap, Kinney, a young JTAC officer attached to the Delta Force team finds himself part of an extraction team relying only on Reaper’s remote air support. Land of Bad is releasing in theatres on February 16, 2024.
