Six To See January 1-5, 2024

  1. Priscilla: the new biographical drama film written, directed, and produced by Sofia Coppola, based on the 1985 memoir Elvis and Me by Priscilla Presley (who serves as an executive producer) and Sandra Harmon. It follows the life of Priscilla, played by Cailee Spaeny, and her complicated romantic relationship with Elvis Presley, played by Jacob Elordi. Priscilla premiered at the 80th Venice International Film Festival on September 4, 2023, and was released in the United States in select theaters on October 27 before expanding wide on November 3. But in Belgium and other European countries the film was only released in theatres this week, so it only made it in the Six To See this week. The film is also releasing even later in some other countries.
  1. Society of the Snow: a new Spanish survival thriller film directed by J. A. Bayona about the Uruguayan 1972 Andes flight disaster. It is an adaptation of Pablo Vierci’s book of the same name, which documents accounts of all 16 survivors of the crash, many of whom Vierci knew from childhood. The cast is composed of Uruguayan and Argentine actors, most of whom are newcomers. The film closed the 80th Venice International Film Festival in an Out of Competition slot. It was released theatrically in Uruguay on December 13, in Spain on December 15 and in the US on December 22 before streaming on Netflix on January 4.
  1. He Went That Way: a new true-crime thriller film directed by Jeffrey Darling in his directorial debut. It is based on the non-fiction book Luke Karamazov by Conrad Hilberry and stars Jacob Elordi and Zachary Quinto in the lead roles. It is inspired by real life events involving serial killer Larry Lee Ranes and follows Jim Goodwin, an animal trainer accompanied by his pet chimpanzee, who picks up a hitchhiker later revealed to be a serial killer. The film had its world premiere at the Tribeca Festival in 2023 and had a limited release in theatres on January 5 and will be released on video on demand next week on January 12.
  1. Night Swim: a new supernatural horror film written and directed by Bryce McGuire, and based on the 2014 short film of the same name by McGuire and Rod Blackhurst. The film stars Wyatt Russell, Kerry Condon, Amélie Hoeferle and Gavin Warren as the Waller family who moves into a new house. There they find an unknown supernatural presence haunts the backyard swimming pool. James Wan and Jason Blum serve as producers. Night Swim was released in theatres on January 5.
  1. The Brothers Sun: a new dark action comedy series created by Brad Falchuk and Byron Wu. It stars Michelle Yeoh, Justin Chien and Sam Song Li as the Sun family. We follow the Brothers Sun, Bruce and Charles, whose lives will change and will be turned upside down. When the head of a powerful Taiwanese triad is shot by a mysterious assassin, his eldest son Charles heads to Los Angeles to protect his mother Eileen and his naive younger brother Bruce who’s been completely sheltered from the truth of his family until now. But as Taipei’s deadliest societies and a new rising faction go head-to-head for dominance, Charles and Bruce must figure out what brotherhood and family truly means before someone takes them out. The series was released on Netflix on January 4. It’s another fun action series with the amazing Michelle Yeoh.
  1. Good Grief: a new comedy-drama film written and directed by Dan Levy who also stars in it alongside Ruth Negga, Himesh Patel, Luke Evans, Celia Imrie, Arnaud Valois, David Bradley, and Jamael Westman. It follows Marc who is struggling to cope with the deaths of his husband and mother and travels with his two best friends to Paris for a weekend getaway. The film was released in limited theaters on December 29, followed by a streaming release on Netflix on January 5.
