- Mother’s Instinct: an upcoming psychological thriller film directed by Benoît Delhomme which is a remake of Olivier Masset-Depasse’s 2018 French-language film of the same name, which itself is an adaptation of the 2012 novel Mothers’ Instinct (Derrière la haine) by Barbara Abel. The film stars Jessica Chastain, Anne Hathaway, Josh Charles and Anders Danielsen Lie. It follows the friendship of two 1960s housewives which rapidly deteriorates after a tragedy. The film is releasing later this year.
- 3 Body Problem: a new science fiction series created by David Benioff, D. B. Weiss and Alexander Woo, the creators of Game of Thrones. It’s based on the novel of the same name by Liu Cixin and stars an ensemble cast including Saamer Usmani, Jess Hong, Jovan Adepo, Sea Shimooka, Rosalind Chao, Benedict Wong, John Bradley, Eiza González, and Alex Sharp. It’ s a very mysterious series following a group of scientists that will face humanity’s greatest threat. The series is releasing on Netflix on March 21.
- Back To Black: an upcoming biographical film based on the life of British singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse, played by Marisa Abela. The film is directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson and written by Matt Greenhalgh. The film also stars Jack O’Connell, Eddie Marsan, Juliet Cowan and Lesley Manville. Following the death of Amy Winehouse in 2011, several filmmakers attempted to create biopic projects but none of them progressed. In 2018, Winehouse’s estate announced they had signed a deal for a biopic about her life and career. The film will delve into the life and career of Amy Winehouse, beginning with her early days in the early 2000s as a North London jazz musician and culminating in her rise to fame as a Grammy-winning singer with hit songs like ‘Rehab’ and ‘Back to Black’. The film is releasing in theatres in the United Kingdom on April 12 and in the United States on May 10.
- Mr. & Mrs. Smith: an upcoming American spy comedy series created by Francesca Sloane and Donald Glover, which is based on the 2005 film of the same name. It stars Donald Glover and Maya Erskine in the lead roles as two spies who are paired up together to impersonate a married couple as John and Jane Smith. The series is premiering on Prime Video on February 2.
- Halo season 2: the second season of the military science fiction series developed by Kyle Killen and Steven Kane and based on the video game franchise of the same name. The series follows a 26th-century war between the United Nations Space Command and the Covenant, a theocratic-military alliance of several advanced alien races determined to eradicate the human race. Pablo Schreiber and Jen Taylor star as Master Chief Petty Officer John-117 and Cortana, with the latter reprising her role from the video game series. Also starring are Shabana Azmi, Natasha Culzac, Olive Gray, Yerin Ha, Bentley Kalu, Kate Kennedy, Charlie Murphy, Danny Sapani, Bokeem Woodbine, and Natascha McElhone. This second season of the series is premiering on Paramount+ on February 8.
- Abigail: an upcoming American monster horror film directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett from a screenplay written by Stephen Shields and Guy Busick. It stars Melissa Barrera, Alisha Weir, Dan Stevens, Kevin Durand, Kathryn Newton, Angus Cloud (in a posthumous film appearance), Will Catlett, and Giancarlo Esposito. Reportedly inspired, in some capacity, by the 1936 Universal film Dracula’s Daughter, the film will focus on a group of kidnappers who come to realize that one of the girls they have abducted is the daughter of Count Dracula. Weir will play one of the kidnap victims, while Barrera will portray one of the kidnappers. Universal has stated that the film will be a unique take on legendary monster lore and will represent a fresh, new direction for how to celebrate these classic characters. The film is releasing in theatres on April 19.
- Players: a new romantic comedy film directed by Trish Sie and written by Whit Anderson. It stars Gina Rodriguez, Damon Wayans Jr., and Tom Ellis. We follow New York sportswriter Mack who has spent years devising successful hook-up “plays” with her friends, but when she unexpectedly falls for one of her targets, she must learn what it takes to go from simply scoring to playing for keeps. The film is releasing on Netflix on Valentine’s Day on February 14.
- Orion and the Dark: a new animated fantasy adventure comedy film directed by Sean Charmatz (in his feature directorial debut) and written by Charlie Kaufman, based on the children’s book of the same name by Emma Yarlett. It stars the voices of Jacob Tremblay as Orion and Paul Walter Hauser as Dark with also Werner Herzog, Ike Barinholtz, Angela Bassett, Natasia Demetriou, Golda Rosheuvel, Nat Faxon and Aparna Nancherla voicing a character in the film. We follow Orion, an elementary school kid with a lot of fears. Of all his fears, the thing he’s the most afraid of is what he confronts on a nightly basis: the Dark. So when the literal embodiment of his worst fear pays a visit, the Dark whisks Orion away on a roller coaster ride around the world to prove there is nothing to be afraid of in the night. As the unlikely pair grows closer, Orion must decide if he can learn to accept the unknown, to stop letting fear control his life and finally embrace the joy of living. The film is releasing on Netflix on February 2.
- Air Force One Down: a new action thriller film directed by James Bamford and written by Steven Paul. It stars Katherine McNamara, Anthony Michael Hall, Dascha Polanco and Ian Bohen. We follow Allison, a rookie Secret Service agent who is on her first assignment aboard Air Force One. She faces the ultimate test when terrorists hijack the plane, intent on derailing a pivotal energy deal. With the President’s life on the line and a global crisis at stake, her bravery and skills are pushed to the limit in a relentless battle that could change the course of history. The film is releasing in limited theatres on February 9 before releasing on streaming and VOD on February 13.
