One the last day of January Danish actress Trine Dyrholm was in Ostend to present her new film Birthday Girl together with Michael Noer, the director of the film. Before walking on the red carpet in the evening, she received a star on the Walk of Fame. I saw the film myself in the evening and really liked it. It’s a little sad, but also a beautiful story about a mother and her daughter that are on a cruise ship. The film takes place on that ship as we follow the mother and daughter.
Master of FFO24 Gene Bervoets was not only there as the master this time, but he was also present with the cast of his new series Assisen: De insulinemoord, including Willem De Schryver, Ayana Doucouré, Bert Haelvoet, An Miller, Filip Peeters, Gijs De Corte, Joren Seldeslachts, Eva Kamanda and Zita Windey. Kawtar Ehlalouch was also there with some of the people you can see in the new show Challas en de kost. Jacqueline van Vugt, Hadewych Minis, Gijs Naber, Nabil Mallat, Ahlaam Teghadouini and Ilias Dennoune were also there for Crossing. And lastly we had Thibaut Wohlfahrt, Roda Fawaz, Wim Willaert, Francesco Mormino, Baptiste Moulart, Aurélien Caeyman, Nicole Valberg, Luc Van Grunderbeeck and Fabrice Adde for Las Pas Perdus.
That evening I also saw the newest film Origin from director Ava DuVarney. It is a beautiful film based on the book Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents by Isabel Wilkerson, which describes racism in the United States as an aspect of a caste system. We follow Isabel Wilkerson, played by the amazing Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, who has to go through some difficult personal stuff while she travels to Germany and India for her book. Jon Bernthal and Niecy Nash-Betts, who also star in the film, are also amazing. I had tears in my eyes watching the film. It’s a film everyone should see.
