Avatar: The Last Airbender: the new adventure fantasy series which is a live-action adaptation of the animated series of the same name (2005–2008). Albert Kim is the showrunner, with an ensemble cast including Gordon Cormier, Dallas Liu, Kiawentiio, Ian Ousley, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, Elizabeth Yu and Daniel Dae Kim. The series is set in a war-torn world inspired by Asian and Indigenous American culture where certain people can bend one of the four classical elements – water, earth, fire or air. Gordon Cormier plays the lead role of Aang, a free-spirited and peaceful twelve-year-old airbender who was frozen in ice for a hundred years. When he wakes up, all the other airbenders have been wiped out by the Fire Nation and he is sent on a quest to end the war and become the figurehead of balance and harmony for the world as the Avatar. With his new companions Katara and Sokka, Aang sets out to master the four elements while pursued by Zuko, the exiled crown prince of the Fire Nation, who seeks to regain his honor by capturing him. The series was released on Netflix on February 22.
Drive-Away Dolls: the new comedy road film directed by Ethan Coen, who wrote the screenplay and edited the film with his wife Tricia Cooke. It is the debut of Coen as a solo director without the collaboration of his brother Joel. The film stars Margaret Qualley, Geraldine Viswanathan, Beanie Feldstein, Colman Domingo, Pedro Pascal, Bill Camp, and Matt Damon. This comedy caper follows Jamie, an uninhibited free spirit bemoaning yet another breakup with a girlfriend, and her demure friend Marian who desperately needs to loosen up. In search of a fresh start, the two embark on an impromptu road trip to Tallahassee, but things quickly go awry when they cross paths with a group of inept criminals along the way. Drive-Away Dolls was released in theatres in the US and Canada on February 23 and is releasing in other countries later in March.
Constellation: a new psychological thriller series created by Peter Harness. Starring in the series is an ensemble cast which includes Noomi Rapace, Jonathan Banks, James D’Arcy, Barbara Sukowa, Carole Weyers, and Rebecca Scroggs. We follow Jo, a woman who has returned to Earth upon a disaster during her mission. Back on Earth, she finds parts of her life seemingly missing. The series premiered on Apple TV+ on February 21 with its first three episodes and the rest of the episodes are releasing weekly.
Wicked Little Letters: a new British black comedy mystery film directed by Thea Sharrock and written by Jonny Sweet. The film stars Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley in the lead roles, along with Anjana Vasan, Malachi Kirby, Eileen Atkins and Timothy Spall. Based on a true scandal that stunned 1920s England, the story centers on neighbours Edith Swan and Rose Gooding in the seaside town of Littlehampton. One day, a series of obscene letters begin to target Edith and others, with suspicion falling upon Rose. As the outrageous letters continue to escalate, Rose risks losing both her freedom and custody of her daughter. Police Officer Gladys Moss (Vasan) is determined to find the real culprit, and along with a group of other women, seeks to solve this perplexing mystery. Wicked Little Letters premiered at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, and was released in theatres in the UK and Ireland on February 23. It will be released in theatres in other countries later in March.
Star Wars: The Bad Batch season 3: the third season of the animated Star Wars series created by Dave Filoni. It acts as both a sequel to and spin-off from the series Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Dee Bradley Baker voices the members of the Bad Batch, a squad of elite clone troopers with genetic mutations that enabled them to resist the mass-murder initiative with which Emperor Palpatine eliminated most of the Jedi Order, relegating them to the status of fugitives of the Galactic Empire, who take on daring mercenary missions in the aftermath of the Clone Wars. Baker also voices other clones in the series, reprising his role from The Clone Wars. Michelle Ang stars as Omega, a female clone who joins the squad. This third season of The Bad Batch is the last one and in this epic final season the Batch have their limits tested in the fight to reunite with Omega as she faces challenges of her own inside a remote Imperial science lab. With the group fractured and facing threats from all directions, they have to seek out unexpected allies, embark on dangerous missions, and muster everything they have learned to free themselves from the Empire. Season 3 of the series premiered on Disney+ on February 21 with its first three episodes and the rest of the episodes releasing weekly.
Mea Culpa: a new legal thriller film written and directed by Tyler Perry. The film stars Kelly Rowland in the lead role as Mea Harper, a criminal defense attorney, who takes the case of an artist, played by Trevante Rhodes, who is accused of murdering his girlfriend. The film also stars Sean Sagar, Nick Sagar, RonReaco Lee, Shannon Thornton and Angela Robinson. The film was released on Netflix on February 23.
