This weekend it was one award show after the other starting with the Césars on Friday night, the SAG Awards on Saturday night and the Film Independent Spirit Awards on Sunday night. Read more about the winners here below.
I’m starting with the Césars, the French version of the Oscars, which honour the best French films of 2023. The big winner at the Césars this year was Anatomy of a Fall which won six awards, including Best Film. For her work on the film, Justine Triet became the second woman in history to win Best Director. The other winning film was The Animal Kingdom, which was nominated the most and won five awards. Agnès Jaoui and Christopher Nolan each received the Honorary César.

Next we have the SAG Awards that were live on Netflix for the first time. It was the 30th edition of the SAG Awards with Oppenheimer and The Bear as the big winners. The film and series both won three SAG Awards. Beef won two awards and Barbra Streisand received the 2023 SAG Life Achievement Award.
The SAG Awards are voted on by members of SAG-AFTRA in categories across film and TV, including stunt performances. The winners of the stunt performers categories were announced during the red carpet preshow with those awards going to The Last of Us and Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One.

The Last of Us
And lastly we had the Film Independent Spirit Awards that were live on YouTube and that was hosted by Aidy Bryant. Live in a tent from the beach of Santa Monica, the best independent films of the last year were awarded. This year, Film Independent added a new category: Best Breakthrough Performance in a New Scripted Series. This move evens the number of performance categories for film and TV; three on the film side and three on the television side.
The Holdovers was the big winner with three awards followed by American Fiction and Past Lives which won two awards. In the TV categories Beef and The Last of Us were the big winners with both two awards.
The winners of the special awards were Fremont that won the John Cassavetes Award, this award is given to the best feature made for under $1,000,000, and Showing Up won the Robert Altman Award, this award is given to the film’s director, casting director, and ensemble cast.
We also have the Emerging Filmmakers Awards that were given with the winners that were already known. The Producers Award, this award honors emerging producers who, despite highly limited resources, demonstrate the creativity, tenacity and vision required to produce quality, independent films, was won by Monique Walton, the Someone to Watch Award, this award recognizes a talented filmmaker of singular vision who has not yet received appropriate recognition, was won by Monica Sorelle for her film Mountains, and the Truer than Fiction Award, this award is presented to an emerging director of non-fiction features who has not yet received significant recognition, was won by Set Hernandez for his film Unseen.
