Six To See Feb 24-March 1, 2024

  1. Dune Part 2: the second part of the film Dune with the first part that was released in 2021. This epic science fiction film is directed by Denis Villeneuve, who co-wrote the screenplay with Jon Spaihts. This is the second of a two-part adaptation of the 1965 novel Dune by Frank Herbert. Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Dave Bautista, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Stellan Skarsgård, Charlotte Rampling, and Javier Bardem reprise their roles from the first film, with Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Christopher Walken and Léa Seydoux joining the ensemble cast. Anya Taylor-Joy, whose part in this film was a secret until recently, also stars in the films. It follows up to what happened in the first one and follows Paul Atreides who unites with the Fremen people of the desert planet Arrakis to wage war against House Harkonnen. Dune Part 2 was released in theatres on March 1 and I went to see it myself this Friday. I was already a fan of the first part, which I also saw in theatres, and this second part is even better. The visuals are incredible and the acting is also amazing. It was great to see even more of Zendaya’s character this time and the newcomers like Pugh, Butler and Walker were really good. This might be one of the best films of this year.
  1. Code 8 Part 2: the new Canadian science fiction action film serving as a sequel to the 2019 film Code 8. Directed by Jeff Chan, who co-wrote the screenplay with Chris Paré, Sherren Lee and Jesse LaVercombe, the film stars Robbie Amell and Stephen Amell who reprise their roles as Connor Reed and Garrett Kelton from the original film. Sirena Gulamgaus, Altair Vincent, Alex Mallari Jr., Moe Jeudy-Lamour, Aaron Abrams, and Jean Yoon also star. The film centers around the 4% of people living in the fictional Lincoln City who possess special abilities. It follows the journey of a teenage girl fighting to get justice for her slain brother at the hands of corrupt police officers. After becoming a witness to the cover-up, she becomes a target and enlists the help of an ex-con and his former partner-in-crime. Code 8: Part II was released on Netflix on February 28.
  1. Shōgun: a new historical drama limited series based on the 1975 novel of the same name by James Clavell. The novel was previously adapted into a 1980 television miniseries. Shōgun follows the collision of two ambitious men from different worlds and a mysterious female samurai. We have John Blackthorne, a risk-taking English sailor who ends up shipwrecked in Japan, a land whose unfamiliar culture will ultimately redefine him; Lord Toranaga, a shrewd, powerful daimyo at odds with his own dangerous, political rivals; and Lady Mariko, a woman with invaluable skills but dishonorable family ties, who must prove her value and allegiance. Clavell’s Shōgun is a fictionalized version of real events and history. The character of Blackthorne is loosely based on the historical English navigator William Adams, who in Japan rose to become a samurai under the strongest powerful daimyo and later the founder and first shogun of the Tokugawa Shogunate of Japan, Tokugawa Ieyasu, whose life and reign lasted from 1543 to 1616 and on whom Shogun’s character Yoshii Toranaga is based. The series premiered with its first two episodes on February 27 on Hulu and FX in the US and on Disney+ in other territories, with new episodes of the 10-episode series releasing weekly.

It tells the story of an astronaut who is sent on a mission to the edge of the solar system to collect mysterious ancient dust. There he encounters a creature that helps him put his earthly problems back together.
