Six To See March 2-8, 2024

  1. Damsel: the new dark fantasy film directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and written by Dan Mazeau. The film stars Millie Bobby Brown, Ray Winstone, Nick Robinson, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Angela Bassett, and Robin Wright. It follows Princess Elodie, a dutiful damsel who agrees to marry a handsome prince, only to discover that the royal family recruited her as a sacrifice to repay an ancient debt. She is then thrown into a cave with a fire-breathing dragon, having to solely rely on her wits and will to survive. Damsel was released on Netflix on March 8.
  1. The Regime: a new drama miniseries starring Kate Winslet, Martha Plimpton, Andrea Riseborough, Matthias Schoenaerts and Hugh Grant. Will Tracy is writer, executive producer and showrunner on the series with Stephen Frears and Jessica Hobbs directing episodes and executive producing. Kate Winslet, Frank Rich and Tracey Seaward are also executive producers. The series depicts a year within the palace of a crumbling authoritarian regime with Kate Winslet in the lead role as the chancellor of a fictional Central European autocracy, who finds her position threatened by domestic turmoil. After not leaving the palace for quite some time, Chancellor Elena Vernham becomes increasingly paranoid and unstable and turns to a volatile soldier, Herbert Zubak, as an unlikely confidant. As Zubak’s influence over the chancellor grows, Elena’s attempts to expand her power eventually result in the palace and the country fracturing around her. The Regime premiered on HBO on March 3 with a new episode releasing weekly.
  1. The Gentlemen: the new drama series created by Guy Ritchie which is a spin-off of Ritchie’s 2019 film of the same name. The series stars Theo James in the lead role as Eddie Halstead who has inherited a large estate from his father, but he learns that the land has become part of Mickey Pearson’s weed-growing empire. Also starring in the series are Kaya Scodelario, Daniel Ings, Joely Richardson, Giancarlo Esposito, Peter Serafinowicz, Vinnie Jones, Chanel Cresswell, Max Beesley, and Ray Winstone. The series was released on Netflix on March 7.
  1. Kung Fu Panda 4: Po is back in this sequel to Kung Fu Panda 3 (2016). This film is the fourth animated martial arts comedy film in the Kung Fu Panda franchise. Directed by Mike Mitchell and co-directed by Stephanie Ma Stine, the film features Jack Black, Dustin Hoffman, James Hong, Bryan Cranston, and Ian McShane reprising their roles from the previous films, joined by Awkwafina, Viola Davis, and Ke Huy Quan. We follow Po who is gearing up to become the Spiritual Leader of the Valley of Peace, so he needs someone to take his place as Dragon Warrior. As such, he will train a new kung fu practitioner for the spot and will encounter a new foe called the Chameleon. The film was released in theatres on March 8.
  1. Imaginary: a new supernatural horror film directed and produced by Jeff Wadlow and written by Jeff Wadlow, Greg Erb and Jason Oremland. The film stars DeWanda Wise, Tom Payne, Taegen Burns, Pyper Braun, Veronica Falcón and Betty Buckley. It follows Jessica who returns to her childhood home with her family. There she finds her old stuffed bear, Chauncey, and sees that her youngest stepdaughter Alice has grown attached to it. After Alice’s behavior becomes concerning, and the games that she and Chauncey play turn increasingly sinister, Jessica starts realizing that Chauncey is much more than the stuffed bear she believed him to be for all those years. The film was released in theatres on March 8.
  1. Ricky Stanicky: a new comedy film directed by Peter Farrelly and starring Zac Efron, John Cena, Jermaine Fowler, Andrew Santino, Lex Scott Davis and William H. Macy. It follows three longtime friends who invented Ricky Stanicky, the name of an imaginary character they use as someone to blame for their misbehavior over the past two decades. When their partners become suspicious and demand to meet Stanicky, they decide to hire a washed-up actor to bring the character to life. Ricky Stanicky was released on Prime Video on March 7.

Bonus: Supersex: a new Italian biographical drama series created and written by Francesca Manieri. It’s based on the life of Rocco Siffredi, a famous Italian pornographic film actor with Alessandro Borghi playing the role of Rocco. Also starring in the series are Jasmine Trinca, Adriano Giannini, Enrico Borello, Vincenzo Nemolato, Gaia Messerklinger, Jade Pedri, and Linda Caridi. The series premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival earlier this year before releasing on Netflix on March 6.
