Six To See March 23-31, 2024

  1. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire: the new monster film directed by Adam Wingard. It is a sequel to Godzilla vs. Kong (2021), and is the fifth film in the MonsterVerse. It is also the 38th film of the Godzilla franchise, the 13th film in the King Kong franchise, and the fifth Godzilla film to be completely produced by an American film studio. The film stars Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Dan Stevens, Kaylee Hottle, Alex Ferns, and Fala Chen. Hall, Henry and Hottle reprise their roles from the previous film. In the film, Kong encounters more of his species in the Hollow Earth and must unite with Godzilla to stop their tyrannical leader and a powerful, climate changing Titan from destroying the surface. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire was released in theatres in the United States and several other countries on March 29. In Belgium it’s releasing a little later on April 10.
  1. We Were the Lucky Ones: a new historical drama series which is an adaptation of the book of the same name by Georgia Hunter. It dramatizes the Holocaust from the perspective of the Kurc family, fictional Polish Jews inspired by real people. The story centers on siblings Halina (Joey King), Addy (Logan Lerman), Genec (Henry Lloyd-Hughes), Jakub (Amit Rahav), Mila (Hadas Yaron) and their parents, Sol (Lior Ashkenazi) and Nechuma (Robin Weigert). Prior to the Second World War, the Kurcs, a Polish Jewish family, lived successful and relatively peaceful lives in Radom. Their success protected them from some of the virulent anti-semitism in the country. Their protection does not last as Hitler’s persecution of European Jewry intensified. The family find themselves in hiding and in concentration camps. Other members of the family managed to escape the dangerous situation in Europe by finding refuge in the United States. Once the War ends, survivors from the family attempt to discover any living relatives and reunite. The series premiered on Hulu in the United States on March 28 with the first three episodes and the rest is releasing weekly.
  1. The Beautiful Game: a new British sports drama film directed by Thea Sharrock and written by Frank Cottrell-Boyce. The film stars Bill Nighy and Micheal Ward in the lead roles alongside Valeria Golino, Callum Scott Howells, Kit Young, and Susan Wokoma. It follows the squad of English homeless footballers, including the talented but troubled striker Vinny, who are led by their coach Mal, to compete in Rome at the global annual football tournament, the Homeless World Cup. The production worked closely with the Homeless World Cup Foundation on the film. Frank Cottrell-Boyce met many participants in the Homeless World Cup and developed characters for the film from their stories. The film was released on Netflix on March 29.
  1. A Gentleman in Moscow: a new drama series based on the 2016 novel of the same name by Amor Towles. Ben Vanstone is writer, executive producer, and showrunner. The series stars Ewan McGregor in the lead role as Count Alexander Ilyich Rostov who spends decades banished to an attic hotel room following the Russian Revolution after being sentenced to house arrest by a Bolshevik tribunal. Also starring in the series are Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Leah Harvey, Johnny Harris, and Paul Ready. The series premiered on Showtime in the US and on Paramount+ internationally on March 29 with a new episode releasing weekly.
  1. Renegade Nell: a new British historical adventure series written by Sally Wainwright and starring Louisa Harland, Joely Richardson, Adrian Lester, Nick Mohammed, Craig Parkinson, Florence Keen, Frank Dillane and Alice Kremelberg. It follows Nell Jackson who finds herself framed for murder and becomes a female highwayman in 18th century England, becoming the most feared highwaywoman in the country. But when a magical spirit called Billy Blind appears, Nell realises her destiny is bigger than she ever imagined. The series premiered on Disney+ March 29.
  1. Asphalt City: a new thriller drama film directed by Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire and written by Ryan King and Ben Mac Brown. It’s based on the 2008 novel Black Flies by Shannon Burke and stars Sean Penn, Tye Sheridan, Gbenga Akinnagbe, Raquel Nave, Kali Reis, Michael Pitt, Katherine Waterston, and Mike Tyson. It follows Ollie Cross who joins veteran paramedic Gene Rutkovsky on a drive through New York City in preparation for medical school. The film, which was originally titled Black Flies, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival last year, where it competed for the Palme d’Or, and was released in theatres on March 29.
  • Bonus: The Listener: a new drama film directed by Steve Buscemi and written by Alessandro Camon. It stars Tessa Thompson in the film’s only on-screen role as a helpline volunteer. It also features a voice cast which include Margaret Cho, Rebecca Hall, Alia Shawkat, Logan Marshall-Green and Derek Cecil. The film premiered at the Venice International film Festival in 2022 and was also screened at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival and now it was released in theatres on March 29.
