Six To See April 6-12, 2024

  1. Fallout: the new post-apocalyptic drama series co-created by Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner and developed by Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan, through their Kilter Films production company. It is based on the role-playing video game franchise created by Interplay Entertainment and now owned by Bethesda Softworks. The series is set within the same continuity as the video game franchise but is an original story. Executive producer Todd Howard said he wanted to avoid adapting the video games. It stars Ella Purnell as Lucy, a young Vault Dweller and the primary protagonist, alongside Aaron Moten, Walton Goggins, Moisés Arias, and Kyle MacLachlan. Set in a post-apocalyptic Los Angeles, the series depicts the aftermath of an apocalyptic nuclear exchange in an alternate history where advances in nuclear technology after WWII led to the emergence of a retrofuturistic society and a subsequent resource war. The survivors took refuge in fallout bunkers known as Vaults, built to preserve humanity in the event of nuclear annihilation. Two centuries later, a young woman named Lucy, a descendant of the original “Vault Dwellers” from one of many Vaults, leaves behind the only life she has ever known to venture out into the dangerously hostile and savage Wasteland of a devastated Los Angeles. Fallout premiered at Canneseries last week and was released on Prime Video on April 11.
  1. Civil War: a new action film written and directed by Alex Garland. The film stars Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Cailee Spaeny, Jesse Plemons, and Nick Offerman. Set in the near future, the film follows a team of journalists who travel across the United States during a rapidly escalating multiparty civil war that has engulfed the entire nation. The film documents the journalists struggling to survive during a time when the U.S. government has become a dystopian dictatorship and partisan extremist militias regularly commit war crimes. Costing $50 million, this is A24’s most expensive film surpassing Beau Is Afraid at $35 million. This will also probably be the last film Alex Garland directed after he announced in an interview that after Civil War, he intends to step back from directing and only focus on writing. Civil War had its world premiere at South by Southwest earlier this year and was released in theatres on April 12.
  1. Franklin: a new biographical drama miniseries about the United States Founding Father Benjamin Franklin, based on Stacy Schiff’s 2005 book A Great Improvisation: Franklin, France, and the Birth of America. Michael Douglas stars as Benjamin Franklin alongside Noah Jupe, Marc Duret, Ludivine Sagnier, Thibault de Montalembert, Daniel Mays, Assaad Bouab, Eddie Marsan, Jeanne Balibar, Théodore Pellerin, and John Hollingworth. The series explores the story of one of the greatest gambles of Franklin’s career. At age 70, Franklin outmaneuvered British spies and French informers while engineering the Franco-American alliance of 1778. It depicts the eight years Benjamin Franklin spent in France to convince the country to underwrite America’s democracy. Franklin premiered on Apple TV+ on April 12 with the first three episodes and the rest of the episodes releasing weekly.

It follows Harriet who finds art imitating life when she discovers certain songs can transport her back in time – literally. While she relives the past through romantic memories of her former boyfriend, her time travelling collides with a burgeoning new love interest in the present. As she takes her journey through time, she must consider whether or not she should change the past. The film had its world premiere at South by Southwest earlier this year followed by a limited theatrical release on April 5 and is now streaming on Hulu in the US and on Disney+ internationally since April 12.
  1. Damaged: a new action thriller film directed by Terry McDonough and starring Samuel L. Jackson and Vincent Cassel. It follows Chicago-based detective Dan Lawson, who travels to Scotland to link up with Scottish detective Boyd where they investigate a series of serial killings in Scotland. As the case continues, Lawson discovers a pattern similar to another killing spree he handled five years prior in Chicago. The film was released in select theaters, including on demand and digital on April 12.
  1. The Absence of Eden: a new thriller film directed and co-written by Marco Perego. It stars Zoe Saldaña, Garrett Hedlund, Adria Arjona and Tom Waits. It follows an ICE Agent struggling with the moral dilemmas of border security and an undocumented woman fighting to escape a ruthless cartel. They cross paths and work together to save the life of an innocent girl. The film had its world premiere at the Taormina Film Festival last year and was released in theatres in the United States on April 12.
