Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver: the second part of the epic space opera Rebel Moon-film directed by Zack Snyder from a screenplay he co-wrote with Kurt Johnstad and Shay Hatten. It’s based on a story Snyder conceived and follows up to what happened in the first film Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire. Starring in the film is an ensemble cast featuring Sofia Boutella, Djimon Hounsou, Ed Skrein, Michiel Huisman, Doona Bae, Ray Fisher, Charlie Hunnam, and Anthony Hopkins. The film is set in a fictional galaxy ruled by the imperialistic Motherworld, whose military, the Imperium, threatens a farming colony on the moon of Veldt. Kora, a former Imperium soldier, ventures on a quest to recruit warriors from across the galaxy to make a stand against the Imperium before they return to Veldt. The first part of Rebel Moon was released on Netflix on December 22, 2023 and now the second part was also released on Netflix on April 19.
The Sympathizer: a new historical black comedy drama series based on the 2015 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name by Viet Thanh Nguyen. The series was created by co-showrunners Park Chan-wook and Don McKellar, with Park directing for the series as well. The series is based on the story of the Captain, played by Hoa Xuande, a North Vietnam plant in the South Vietnam army. He is forced to flee to the United States with his general near the end of the Vietnam War. While living within a community of South Vietnamese refugees, he continues to secretly spy on the community and report back to the Viet Cong, struggling between his original loyalties and his new life. Also starring are Fred Nguyen Khan, Toan Le, Duy Nguyễn, Vy Le, Alan Trong, Sandra Oh, and Robert Downey Jr. in several antagonist roles. The series premiered on HBO on April 14 with a new episode releasing weekly.
Abigail: a new monster horror film directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett from a screenplay written by Stephen Shields and Guy Busick. It stars Melissa Barrera, Alisha Weir, Dan Stevens, Kevin Durand, Kathryn Newton, Angus Cloud (in a posthumous film appearance), Will Catlett, and Giancarlo Esposito. Reportedly inspired, in some capacity, by the 1936 Universal film Dracula’s Daughter, the film will focus on a group of kidnappers who come to realize that one of the girls they have abducted is the daughter of Count Dracula. Weir will play one of the kidnap victims, while Barrera will portray one of the kidnappers. Universal has stated that the film will be a unique take on legendary monster lore and will represent a fresh, new direction for how to celebrate these classic characters. The film was released in theatres on April 19.
The Ministry Of Ungentlemanly Warfare: a new action spy comedy film directed and co-written by Guy Ritchie, based on the 2014 book Churchill’s Secret Warriors: The Explosive True Story of the Special Forces Desperadoes of WWII by Damien Lewis. The film portrays a heavily fictionalized version of Operation Postmaster, a British special operation. It stars Henry Cavill, Eiza González, Alan Ritchson, Henry Golding, Alex Pettyfer, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, Babs Olusanmokun, and Til Schweiger. The film revolves around the Special Operations Executive, a covert British organization formed in 1940 by Prime Minister Winston Churchill to conduct espionage and sabotage operations in Nazi-occupied Europe during World War II. These operations, which utilized unconventional tactics, contributed significantly to the Allied victory over Nazi Germany and were forerunners of modern-day black operations and irregular warfare. The film was released in theatres on April 19.
Stress Positions: a new comedy drama film directed by Theda Hammel. It stars John Early, Theda Hammel, Qaher Harhash, Amy Zimmer, Faheem Ali, Rebecca F. Wright, Davidson Obennebo and John Roberts. The film is set during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic in Brooklyn and follows a Moroccan American young man named Bahlul, who recovers from a broken leg while quarantining with his uncle Terry. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and was released in theaters on April 19.
Under The Bridge: a new true crime drama miniseries based on the book of the same name by Rebecca Godfrey. The series is about the 1997 true story of fourteen-year old Reena Virk (Vritika Gupta) who went to join friends at a party and never returned home. Through the eyes of Godfrey (Riley Keough) and a local police officer (Lily Gladstone), the series takes us into the hidden world of the young girls accused of the murder revealing startling truths about the unlikely killer. The series premiered on Hulu in the US on April 17 with the two first episodes and the rest of the episodes releasing weekly.
