Challengers: a new romantic sports comedy-drama film directed by Luca Guadagnino and written by Justin Kuritzkes. The film stars Zendaya, Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist in the lead roles. It follows Tashi Duncan, a former tennis prodigy who turned coach after a career-ending injury. She is married to Art Donaldson, a Grand Slam tennis champion on a losing streak. Her strategy for her husband’s redemption takes a surprising turn when he must face off against his former best friend, who is also Tashi’s former boyfriend. The film was delayed from its initial September 15, 2023 release date and pulled out from its slot as the opening film of the 80th Venice International Film Festival due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. But now Challengers was finally released in theatres on April 26 in several countries like the US and Canada. In other countries like Belgium and the Netherlands the film is releasing a week later.
Boy Kills World: a new action thriller film directed by Moritz Mohr in his feature directorial debut, from a screenplay by Tyler Burton Smith and Arend Remmers. Produced by Sam Raimi and Roy Lee, it stars Bill Skarsgård, Jessica Rothe, Michelle Dockery, Brett Gelman, Isaiah Mustafa, Yayan Ruhian, Andrew Koji, Sharlto Copley, H. Jon Benjamin, and Famke Janssen. Bill Skarsgård stars in the lead role as a man named Boy, who vows revenge after his family is murdered by Hilda Van Der Koy, the matriarch of a corrupt, post-apocalyptic dynasty, in an attack that left Boy deaf-mute. After being trained in the martial arts by a mysterious shaman, Boy and a ragtag resistance group embark upon a campaign of vengeance, his thoughts expressed by an inner voice derived from his favorite video game, provided by H. Jon Benjamin, with which he bickers with the ghost of his dead younger sister. The film premiered at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival and was released in theatres on April 26.
Dead Boy Detectives: a new supernatural horror detective-comedy series developed by Steve Yockey based on the DC Comics characters of the same name by Neil Gaiman and Matt Wagner. It’s set in the same universe as The Sandman and stars George Rexstrew as Edwin Payne and Jayden Revri as Charles Rowland, two dead boys who decided not to enter the afterlife and stay on Earth and investigate crimes that involve the supernatural. Also starring are Kassius Nelson, Briana Cuoco, Ruth Connell, Yuyu Kitamura and Jenn Lyon. Additionally, Kirby Howell-Baptiste is reprising her role as Death from The Sandman. The series was released on Netflix on April 25.
Knuckles: a new miniseries created by John Whittington and Toby Ascher, based on the Sonic the Hedgehog video game series. It is a spin-off of the film Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022) and is part of the Sonic film series. It’s the first live-action series in the franchise overall and takes place between the events of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022) and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024). Idris Elba reprises his voice role as Knuckles the Echidna from Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and stars alongside Adam Pally, reprising his role as Wade. The series follows Knuckles the Echidna as he trains deputy sheriff Wade Whipple in the ways of the Echidna warrior. All six episodes of Knuckles were released on Paramount+ on April 26.
Humane: a new dystopian thriller film directed by Caitlin Cronenberg, making her feature film debut, and written by Michael Sparaga. It stars Jay Baruchel, Emily Hampshire, Sebastian Chacon, Alanna Bale, Sirena Gulamgaus, Uni Park, Enrico Colantoni, and Peter Gallagher. The film takes place over one day and mere months after a global ecological collapse has forced world leaders to take extreme measures to reduce the earth’s population. We follow a recently retired newsman who invites his grown children to dinner to announce his intentions to enlist in the nation’s new euthanasia program. But when the father’s plan goes horribly awry, tensions flare and chaos erupts among his children. Humane was released in theatres on April 26 and will be released on Shudder on July 26.
Them: The Scare: the second season of Them, the black horror anthology series, created by Little Marvin and executive produced by Lena Waithe. The series stars Deborah Ayorinde, who is returning in a new role in this new season. Also starring in this new season are Pam Grier, Luke James, Joshua J. Williams and Jeremy Bobb. Set in 1991, Them: The Scare centers on LAPD Detective Dawn Reeve, who is assigned to a new case: a gruesome murder that has left the most hardened detectives shaken. As Dawn draws closer to the truth, something malevolent grips her and her family. Them: The Scare premiered on Prime Video on April 25.
