Bad Boys: Ride Or Die: the fourth film in the Bad Boys franchise. This buddy cop action comedy film is directed by Adil & Bilall and is the sequel to Bad Boys for Life (2020). Will Smith and Martin Lawrence are back as Mike and Marcus, along with Vanessa Hudgens, Alexander Ludwig, Paola Núñez, DJ Khaled and Jacob Scipio reprising their roles from the previous film, and with Tasha Smith taking over the role of Theresa Burnett from Theresa Randle, who previously played the character in the last three films. New cast members include Eric Dane, Ioan Gruffudd, Rhea Seehorn, and Joyner Lucas. The world’s favourite Bad Boys are back with their iconic mix of edge-of-your-seat action and outrageous comedy but this time with a twist: Miami’s finest are on the run. Detectives Mike and Marcus investigate corruption within the Miami Police Department when their late Captain Conrad Howard is posthumously accused of being involved with the Romanian mafia, but a setup turns them into fugitives, forcing them to work outside the law in order to solve the case. The film was released in theatres on June 7.
Hit Man: a new romantic action comedy film produced and directed by Richard Linklater, who co-wrote the screenplay with Glen Powell. It is based on the 2001 Texas Monthly magazine article of the same name by Skip Hollandsworth. The film stars Glen Powell, Adria Arjona, Austin Amelio, Retta, and Molly Bernard. It follows Gary Johnson, a college professor and tech guy turned undercover mole. He is a part-time staffer with the New Orleans Police Department and stumbles into the role of posing undercover as a reliable hitman with the goal of arresting those trying to hire him. He discovers he has a talent for theatrically matching the expectations of his suspects with often-humorous costumes, accents, and mannerisms, which makes him especially adept at his work. He meets a battered woman who wants to hire him to kill her husband, but he advises her to pursue better options for getting help. They become romantically entangled. Hit Man premiered at the Venice International Film Festival last year and was released in select theatres before streaming on Netflix on June 7.
Sweet Tooth season 3: the third and last season of the fantasy drama series developed by Jim Mickle, which is based on the comic book series created by Jeff Lemire and published by DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint. Christian Convery is back as Gus, a part-deer boy, alongside Nonso Anozie, Adeel Akhtar, Stefania LaVie Owen, Naledi Murray and Dania Ramirez. In this last season Gus, Jepperd and his other hybrid friends he met in the previous seasons, are embarking for an adventure to Alaska to find Gus’ mother. This new season’s events are leading to a thrilling climax that will determine the fate of humanity and hybrids. Season 3 of Sweet Tooth was released on Netflix on June 6.
The Acolyte: the new science fiction series created by Leslye Headland which is part of the Star Wars franchise. It is set at the end of the High Republic era before the events of the main Star Wars films, approximately 100 years before Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999). It follows a Jedi Master investigating a series of crimes that bring him into conflict with a former Padawan learner and reveal sinister forces. Amandla Stenberg, Lee Jung-jae, Manny Jacinto, Dafne Keen, Charlie Barnett, Jodie Turner-Smith, Rebecca Henderson, Dean-Charles Chapman, Joonas Suotamo, and Carrie-Anne Moss star in the series. The Acolyte premiered on Disney+ on June 4 with its first two episodes. The other six episodes will be released weekly.
The Watchers: a new supernatural horror film written and directed by Ishana Night Shyamalan, the daughter of director M. Night Shyamalan, making her feature directorial debut. It’s based on the novel of the same name by A. M. Shine and stars Dakota Fanning, Georgina Campbell, Oliver Finnegan, and Olwen Fouéré. We follow 28-year-old artist Mina who gets stranded in an expansive, untouched forest in western Ireland. Upon finding shelter, she unknowingly becomes trapped alongside three strangers who are watched and stalked by mysterious creatures each night. The film was released in theatres on June 7.
Am I Ok?: a new comedy-drama film directed by Tig Notaro and Stephanie Allynne and written by Lauren Pomerantz. It stars Dakota Johnson, Sonoya Mizuno, Jermaine Fowler, Kiersey Clemons, Molly Gordon, June Diane Raphael, Tig Notaro, and Sean Hayes. It follows Lucy, a 32-year-old woman living in Los Angeles, who realizes that all her dates with men are unsuccessful because she is a lesbian. With the help of her lifelong best friend Jane, she attempts to navigate coming out and dating women in her 30s. The film had its world premiere at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival and was released on Max on June 6.
Bonus: Clipped: a new documentary drama sports series created by Gina Welch and starring Laurence Fishburne, Jacki Weaver, Cleopatra Coleman, and Ed O’Neill. It probes a notorious NBA owner’s racist remarks, captured on a tape heard around the world. Based on the hit ESPN 30 for 30 podcast The Sterling Affairs, this limited series charts the collision between a dysfunctional basketball organization and even less-functional marriage, and the precipitating tape’s impact on an ensemble of characters striving to win against the backdrop of the most cursed team in the league. It chronicles the downfall of Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling, amid the team’s drive to win a championship under coach Doc Rivers. The series, which consists of six episodes, premiered on Hulu on June 4.
