- Smile 2: an upcoming psychological supernatural horror film written and directed by Parker Finn. It serves as a direct sequel to Smile (2022), which in turn is based on Finn’s short film Laura Hasn’t Slept (2020). Kyle Gallner reprises his role as Joel from the first film, while Naomi Scott, Lukas Gage, and Rosemarie DeWitt appear as new characters. Smile 2 is releasing in theatres on October 18.
- Lady in the Lake: an upcoming limited series based on the novel of the same name by Laura Lippman. It’s created by Alma Har’el and stars Natalie Portman, Moses Ingram, Y’lan Noel, Mikey Madison, Sean Ringgold, Brett Gelman, Noah Jupe and Mike Epps. It’s set in 1960s Baltimore and follows an investigative journalist working on an unsolved murder who clashes with a woman working to advance the agenda of the city’s black community. The protagonist ditches her doting husband and big Pikesville home to pursue a career as a newspaper reporter. She becomes obsessed with unraveling the mystery of two separate killings: eleven-year-old Tessie Fine and a bartender named Cleo Sherwood. The series is premiering on Apple TV+ on July 19.
- A Real Pain: a new comedy drama film written, directed, and produced by Jesse Eisenberg who also stars in the film alongside Kieran Culkin, Will Sharpe, Jennifer Grey, Kurt Egyiawan, Liza Sadovy, and Daniel Oreskes. Emma Stone serves as a producer under her Fruit Tree banner. A Real Pain follows mismatched cousins David (Eisenberg) and Benji (Culkin) who reunite for a tour through Poland to honor their beloved grandmother. The adventure takes a turn when the odd-couple’s old tensions resurface against the backdrop of their family history. The film had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and is releasing in theatres on October 18.
- Emilia Perez: a new musical crime comedy film written and directed by Jacques Audiard. It stars Zoe Saldaña, Karla Sofía Gascón, Selena Gomez, Adriana Paz, and Édgar Ramírez. The original songs for the film were contributed by Camille, while its original score was provided by Clément Ducol. It follows disgruntled lawyer Rita who is tasked with assisting an escaped Mexican cartel leader in undergoing sex reassignment surgery to both evade the authorities and affirm her gender. The film premiered at the 77th Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, and was selected to compete for the Palme d’Or in its main competition section, where it won the Jury Prize and its female ensemble won the Best Actress award. The film is releasing in theatres in France on August 21.
- Fly Me to the Moon: a final trailer was released for the upcoming romantic comedy drama film directed by Greg Berlanti and written by Rose Gilroy. The film stars Scarlett Johansson, Channing Tatum, Nick Dillenburg, Anna Garcia, Jim Rash, Noah Robbins, Colin Woodell, Christian Zuber, Donald Elise Watkins, Ray Romano, and Woody Harrelson. It follows the relationship between a marketing specialist and a NASA director during the 1960s Space Race. Fly Me to the Moon is releasing in theatres on July 12, before streaming on Apple TV+ at a later date.
- The Front Room: an upcoming psychological horror film written and directed by the Eggers Brothers in their feature film debut. The film is based on the 2016 short story of the same name by Susan Hill, and stars Brandy Norwood, Kathryn Hunter and Andrew Burnap. It tells the story of a young, newly pregnant couple who is forced to take in an ailing, estranged stepmother. The film is releasing in theatres on September 6.
- The Penguin: the upcoming limited series created by Lauren LeFranc, based on the DC Comics character Penguin, which is a spin-off from the film The Batman (2022). It takes place one week following the events of The Batman and explores the Penguin’s rise to power in Gotham City’s criminal underworld. Colin Farrell stars as the Penguin, reprising his role from The Batman, alongside Cristin Milioti. Farrell said the series would further explore the character’s “awkwardness, and his strength, and his villainy” as well as the “heartbroken man inside there” beyond his introduction in The Batman. The series will consist of eight episodes and is premiering on Max in September 2024.
