Six To See June 22-30, 2024

  1. A Quiet Place: Day One: the new post-apocalyptic horror film written and directed by Michael Sarnoski, based on an original story by John Krasinski and Sarnoski. It is intended to be a spin-off prequel and the third overall installment of the A Quiet Place film series. The film stars Lupita Nyong’o, Joseph Quinn, Alex Wolff, Djimon Hounsou, and Denis O’Hare. As the title suggests, it goes back to day one of the alien invasion, which Krasinski explored briefly in the opening flashback sequence of A Quiet Place: Part II. It follows Sam, a woman who’s on a day trip to New York City when the monsters arrive. As everything quickly goes to hell, she’s thrown together with a man named Eric. With some reluctance, the pair agree to navigate and survive the city together. The film was released in theatres on June 28.
  1. Fancy Dance: a new drama film directed by Erica Tremblay in her feature narrative directorial debut, from a screenplay by Tremblay and Miciana Alise. It stars Lily Gladstone, Isabel DeRoy-Olson and Shea Whigham. It follows Jax who, since her sister’s disappearance, has cared for her niece Roki on the Seneca–Cayuga Nation Reservation. Every spare minute goes into finding her missing sister while also helping Roki prepare for an upcoming powwow. At the risk of losing custody to Jax’s father, Frank, the pair hit the road to track down Roki’s mother in time for the powwow. Fancy Dance premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival and was released in a limited release in theatres on June 21, prior to streaming on Apple TV+ on June 28.
  1. The Bear season 3: the third season of the comedy-drama series created by Christopher Storer. Jeremy Allen White stars as Carmy Berzatto, an award-winning chef who returns to his hometown of Chicago to manage the chaotic kitchen at his deceased brother’s sandwich shop. The supporting cast includes Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Ayo Edebiri, Lionel Boyce, Liza Colón-Zayas, Abby Elliott and Matty Matheson. In this season we will follow Carmy and his crew who open their new restaurant. Season 3 of The Bear was released on Hulu in the US and on Disney+ internationally on June 27. Ahead of the third season premiere, the series was already renewed for a fourth season, which was filmed back-to-back with the third season.
  1. Orphan Black: Echoes: the new science fiction thriller series created by Anna Fishko based on Orphan Black created by John Fawcett and Graeme Manson. The series stars Krysten Ritter in the lead role and is set in 2052 in the same universe as Orphan Black. Thirty-seven years since the end of the original series, Echoes follows the life of the now adult Kira and her wife, as they try to help an amnesiac girl, named Lucy (Ritter). Dr. Kira Manning is a scientist and the daughter of Sarah Manning, the protagonist from the original Orphan Black series. She was previously portrayed by Skyler Wexler in the original series and is now played by Keeley Hawes in this series. Also starring in the series are Amanda Fix, Avan Jogia, James Hiroyuki Liao, and Rya Kihlstedt. Jordan Gavaris and Evelyne Brochu are also reprising their roles as Felix Dawkins and Dr. Delphine Cormier from the original Orphan Black series as guest stars. All 10 episodes of season one premiered on November 3, 2023, in Australia on Stan and premiered on June 23 on AMC, AMC+ and BBC America.
  1. Horizon: An American Saga: the new two-part American epic Western film produced and directed by Kevin Costner, who also co-wrote the film with Jon Baird. The film stars Kevin Costner along with an ensemble cast consisting of Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Giovanni Ribisi, Jena Malone, Abbey Lee, Michael Rooker, Danny Huston, Luke Wilson, Isabelle Fuhrman, Jeff Fahey, Will Patton, Tatanka Means, Owen Crow Shoe, Ella Hunt, Jamie Campbell Bower and Thomas Haden Church. Set in the American Civil War period the film depicts the expansion of the American west. Horrizon: An American Saga is a two-part film event, with Chapter 1 that premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on May 19 and was released in theatres on June 28, while Chapter 2 will be released on August 16.
  1. A Family Affair: a new romantic comedy film directed by Richard LaGravenese and written by Carrie Solomon. The film stars Nicole Kidman, Zac Efron, Joey King, Liza Koshy, Kathy Bates and Shirley MacLaine. It follows a young woman named Zara who works as an assistant for movie star Chris Cole — that is, until Chris falls in love with her mother. A Family Affair was released on Netflix on June 28.

2 bonus films:

  • A Sacrifice: a new psychological drama film written and directed by Jordan Scott. It stars Eric Bana, Sadie Sink and Sylvia Hoeks and is an adaptation of Nicholas Hogg’s 2015 novel Tokyo. It follows a psychiatrist who must save his daughter from a cult after she falls in love with a boy whose mother is the leader of that cult. The film was released in theatres in the United States on June 28.
  • Reunion: a new comedy mystery film directed by Chris Nelson and starring Lil Rel Howery, Billy Magnussen, Jillian Bell, Jamie Chung, Michael Hitchcock, Nina Dobrev, and Chace Crawford. The film is set during the aftermath of a twenty-year high school reunion, when an obnoxious popular student is murdered and his former classmates are left to figure out who among them is responsible. The film was first released in Brazil on Paramount+ on April 13 and was released digitally in the United States on June 28.

2 bonus series:

  • Land of Women: a new comedy drama thriller series. It was created by Ramón Campos, inspired by award-winning author Sandra Barneda’s bestselling novel. The series stars Eva Longoria, Carmen Maura, Santiago Cabrera, Gloria Muñoz and Victoria Bazua. It follows a woman who is forced to flee with her mother and daughter to Spain after her husband disappears in the wake of his financial dealings unraveling. The series premiered on Apple TV+ on June 26.
  • My Lady Jane: a new British series starring Emily Bader, Edward Bluemel and Jordan Peters. The series is adapted by Gemma Burgess from a series of novels that provided a historical reimagining of the life of Lady Jane Grey, written by Brodi Ashton, Cynthia Hand and Jodi Meadows, that began with My Lady Jane in 2016. Set in the 16th century we follow Lady Jane Grey who avoids the executioner’s axe and has a fun and fulfilling life, full of romance and adventure. The series had its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this June and was released on Amazon Prime Video on June 27.
