Six To See July 13-26, 2024

Six films:

  1. Deadpool & Wolverine: the third Deadpool film which is the first one that is part of the MCU and which is based on the Marvel Comics characters Deadpool and Wolverine. The film is directed by Shawn Levy from a script he wrote with Ryan Reynolds, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, and Zeb Wells. Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman star as Deadpool and Wolverine, alongside Emma Corrin, Morena Baccarin, Rob Delaney, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni, and Matthew Macfadyen. In the film, the Time Variance Authority (TVA) pulls Deadpool from his quiet life and sets him on a mission to save his universe, colliding with a Wolverine from another universe in the process. The film was released in theatres on July 26. I went to see the film already and really loved it. It was a lot of fun to watch Ryan and Hugh together. There are also a lot of amazing cameos in the film with some of them you won’t expect. So go watch the film in theatres because it’s really worth it.
  1. Twisters: the new disaster film directed by Lee Isaac Chung from a screenplay by Mark L. Smith. It is a standalone sequel to the 1996 film Twister and is centered on a pair of storm chasers who risk their lives in an attempt to test an experimental weather alert system. They attempt to launch barrels of sodium polyacrylate solution into a tornado with the goal of reducing its intensity. The film stars Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, Anthony Ramos, Maura Tierney, Brandon Perea, Daryl McCormack, Sasha Lane, Kiernan Shipka, and Nik Dodani. The film was released in theatres on July 19.
  1. My Spy The Eternal City: a new spy comedy film directed by Peter Segal. It is the sequel to the 2020 film My Spy with Dave Bautista, Chloe Coleman, Kristen Schaal and Ken Jeong reprising their roles from the previous film. We follow JJ who is convinced to accompany Sophie on her school trip to Italy, where they become involved in a terrorist plot. The film was released on Amazon Prime Video on July 18.
  1. Find Me Falling: a new romantic comedy film written and directed by Stelana Kliris. It stars Harry Connick Jr. in the lead role as John, alongside Agni Scott and Ali Fumiko Whitney. It follows rock star John Allman who, after a failed comeback album, escapes to the dreamy Mediterranean island Cyprus, only to discover that his new cliffside home has an unfortunate notoriety that attracts unwanted visitors and an old flame. Find Me Falling was released on Netflix on July 19.
  1. Dìdi: a new coming-of-age comedy drama film written, directed, and produced by Sean Wang, in his directorial debut. It stars Izaac Wang and Joan Chen in the lead roles. The film is set in 2008 and follows a 13-year-old Taiwanese-American boy who learns how to skate, flirt and love his mother. Dìdi had its world premiere at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, where it won the Audience Award: U.S. Dramatic and U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award: Ensemble. Dìdi was released in theatres on July 26.
  1. The Good Half: a new comedy-drama film written by Brett Ryland, directed by Robert Schwartzman, and starring Nick Jonas, Brittany Snow, David Arquette, Alexandra Shipp, Matt Walsh, and Elisabeth Shue. It follows Renn Wheeland who returns home to Cleveland, Ohio, for his mother’s funeral. Once there, he forges new relationships while healing old ones, before confronting his problems and trying to face his grief. The film premiered on June 8, 2023, at the Tribeca Festival, and it was released in theatres in the United States on July 23.

Six series:

  1. Lady in the Lake: a new limited series based on the novel of the same name by Laura Lippman. It’s created by Alma Har’el and stars Natalie Portman, Moses Ingram, Y’lan Noel, Mikey Madison, Sean Ringgold, Brett Gelman, Noah Jupe and Mike Epps. It’s set in 1960s Baltimore and follows an investigative journalist working on an unsolved murder who clashes with a woman working to advance the agenda of the city’s black community. The protagonist ditches her doting husband and big Pikesville home to pursue a career as a newspaper reporter. She becomes obsessed with unraveling the mystery of two separate killings: eleven-year-old Tessie Fine and a bartender named Cleo Sherwood. The series premiered on Apple TV+ on July 19.
  1. Kite Man: Hell Yeah!: a new adult animated black comedy superhero series based on the DC Comics character Kite Man created by Bill Finger and Dick Sprang. The series stars Matt Oberg, Stephanie Hsu and James Adomian, and follows the adventures of Kite Man and his current girlfriend Golden Glider who have support the purchase of a local bar named Noonan’s. Nobody said serving cold ones to the most dangerous rogues outside of Arkham Asylum would be easy, but sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name, and how to hide a body. The series serves as a spin-off of Harley Quinn, where Kite Man was featured as a supporting character and ex-fiancé to Poison Ivy. The first season consists of ten episodes and premiered on HBO Max on July 18.
  1. Cobra Kai season 6 part 1: The sixth and final season of Cobra Kai, the sequel series to the original The Karate Kid films created by Robert Mark Kamen. The series was created by Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg. The series is a direct sequel to the original four films in The Karate Kid franchise, focusing on the characters of Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence over 30 years after the original film. Unlike previous seasons, the sixth season will be released in three parts of five episodes each, the first of which was released on July 18.
  1. Snowpiercer season 4: the fourth and final season of the post-apocalyptic dystopian thriller series, based on both the 2013 film of the same name, directed by Bong Joon-ho, and the 1982 French graphic novel Le Transperceneige by Jacques Lob, Benjamin Legrand and Jean-Marc Rochette, from which the film was adapted. The series, a reboot of the film’s continuity, follows the passengers of the Snowpiercer, a gigantic, perpetually moving train that circles the globe carrying the remnants of humanity seven years after the world becomes a frozen wasteland. The series questions class warfare, social injustice and the politics of survival. Jennifer Connelly and Daveed Diggs star alongside Mickey Sumner, Alison Wright, Iddo Goldberg, Susan Park, Katie McGuinness, Sam Otto, Sheila Vand, Mike O’Malley, Annalise Basso, Jaylin Fletcher, Lena Hall and Roberto Urbina. Steven Ogg, Rowan Blanchard and Sean Bean joined the main cast in the second season and both Chelsea Harris and Archie Panjabi joined the main cast in the third season. This fourth and final season of the series will not air on TNT but on AMC which had picked up the series. Season 4 of Snowpiercer premiered on July 21.
  1. The Decameron: a new medieval black comedy series created by Kathleen Jordan. It is inspired by the 14th century Italian short-story collection The Decameron by Giovanni Boccaccio. Starring in the series are Zosia Mamet, Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Tanya Reynolds, Leila Farzad, Tony Hale, and Jessica Plummer. Set in 1348 as the Black Death ravages Florence, we follow a number of nobles and their servants who retreat to the countryside Villa Santa. As they try to wait out the plague in the hills of Tuscany with wine and sex, the group eventually must fight for their survival. The series was released on Netflix on July 25.
  1. Time Bandits: a new fantasy adventure series created by Jemaine Clement, Iain Morris, and Taika Waititi, based on the 1981 film of the same name directed by Terry Gilliam. The series is described as a comedic journey through time and space with a ragtag group of thieves and their newest recruit: an eleven-year-old history nerd. Starring in the series are Lisa Kudrow, Kal-El Tuck, Charlyne Yi, Tadhg Murphy, Roger Jean Nsengiyumva, Rune Temte, and Kiera Thompson. Time Bandits premiered on Apple TV+ on July 24.
