- The Umbrella Academy season 4: the fourth and final season of the superhero series based on the comic book series of the same name written by Gerard Way, illustrated by Gabriel Bá, and published by Dark Horse Comics. Created for Netflix by Steve Blackman and developed by Jeremy Slater, it revolves around a dysfunctional family of adopted sibling superheroes who reunite to solve the mystery of their father’s death and the threat of an imminent apocalypse. In this fourth season the siblings have to come together one last time to save the world. All lead actors are reprising their roles from the previous seasons including Elliot Page, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher, Justin H. Min, Ritu Arya, and Colm Feore. Season 4 of the series was released on Netflix on August 8.
- Cuckoo: a new psychological horror film written and directed by Tilman Singer. It stars Hunter Schafer in the lead role as 17-year-old Gretchen who leaves her American home to live with her father, who has just moved into a resort in the German Alps with his new family. Arriving at their future residence, they are greeted by Mr. König, her father’s boss, who takes an inexplicable interest in Gretchen’s mute half-sister Alma. Something doesn’t seem right in this tranquil vacation paradise. Gretchen is plagued by strange noises and bloody visions until she discovers a shocking secret that also concerns her own family. Also starring in the film are Dan Stevens and Jessica Henwick. Cuckoo had its world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival earlier this year and was released in theatres in the United States on August 9.
- It Ends With Us: a new romance film directed by Justin Baldoni and written by Christy Hall, based on the 2016 novel of the same name by Colleen Hoover. It stars Blake Lively, Justin Baldoni, Jenny Slate, Hasan Minhaj, Amy Morton, and Brandon Sklenar. The film follows Lily who overcomes a traumatic childhood to embark on a new life. A chance meeting with a neurosurgeon sparks a connection but Lily begins to see sides of him that remind her of her parents’ relationship. It Ends With Us was released in theatres on August 9.
- Trap: the new psychological thriller film directed and written by M. Night Shyamalan. It stars Josh Hartnett as a serial killer dubbed ‘The Butcher’ who joins his daughter at a concert for pop star Lady Raven. He realizes the concert is a trap set by the police to catch him. Ariel Donoghue stars as The Butcher’s daughter Jody and Saleka Shyamalan as Lady Raven. Trap was released in theatres on August 9.
- Borderlands: a new science fiction action comedy film directed by Eli Roth, who co-wrote the screenplay with Joe Crombie. It is based on the video game series of the same name developed by Gearbox Software. It stars an ensemble cast featuring Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Edgar Ramírez, Ariana Greenblatt, Florian Munteanu, Gina Gershon, and Jamie Lee Curtis. Blanchett stars as Lillith, an infamous outlaw who returns to the place where she grew up and forms an alliance with a team of misfits to find the missing daughter of the most powerful man in the universe. Borderlands was released in theatres on August 9.
- The Instigators: a new heist thriller film directed by Doug Liman, written by Chuck Maclean and Casey Affleck, and starring Casey Affleck and Matt Damon, who also produces the film alongside Ben Affleck under their production company Artists Equity. Besides Affleck and Damon, we also have Hong Chau, Paul Walter Hauser, Michael Stuhlbarg, Ving Rhames, Alfred Molina, Toby Jones, Jack Harlow and Ron Perlman starring in the film. The Instigators was released in select theaters in the United States on August 2, before premiering on Apple TV+ on August 9.
Two bonus films:
- One Fast Move: a new action film written and directed by Kelly Blatz and starring KJ Apa, Eric Dane, Maia Reficco, Edward James Olmos, and Austin North. It follows a young man who seeks out his estranged father to pursue his dream of becoming a professional motorcycle racer. With help from his love interest and a motorcycle shop owner, he begins to break down the walls his father’s absence had created. The film was released by Amazon MGM Studios on August 8.
- Harold and the Purple Crayon: a new live-action/animated fantasy film directed by Carlos Saldanha in his live-action directorial debut from a screenplay written by David Guion and Michael Handelman. Based on the 1955 children’s book of the same name written by Crockett Johnson, the film stars Zachary Levi in the titular role, with Lil Rel Howery, Benjamin Bottani, Jemaine Clement, Tanya Reynolds, and Zooey Deschanel in supporting roles. The film follows adventurous Harold who can make anything come to life simply by drawing it inside of his book, After he grows up and draws himself off the book’s pages and into the physical world, Harold finds he has a lot to learn about real life – and that his trusty purple crayon may set off more hilarious hijinks than he thought possible. When the power of unlimited imagination falls into the wrong hands, it will take all of Harold and his friends’ creativity to save both the real world and his own. The film was released in theaters on August 2.
