Six To See September 14-20, 2024

  1. Agatha All Along: the new Marvel miniseries created by Jac Schaeffer, based on the Marvel Comics character Agatha Harkness. A spin-off from the series WandaVision (2021), it is the 11th television series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) produced by Marvel Studios, via its Marvel Television label, sharing continuity with the films of the franchise. Schaeffer serves as showrunner and lead director. Kathryn Hahn reprises her role as Agatha Harkness from WandaVision, with Joe Locke, Sasheer Zamata, Ali Ahn, Maria Dizzia, Paul Adelstein, Miles Gutierrez-Riley, Okwui Okpokwasili, Debra Jo Rupp, Patti LuPone, and Aubrey Plaza also starring. At the end of WandaVision, the witch Agatha Harkness was trapped in the town of Westview, New Jersey. In Agatha All Along, she escapes with the help of a goth teen who wishes to face the trials of the legendary Witches’ Road. Without her magical powers, Harkness and the teen form a new coven of witches to face the trials with. Agatha All Along premiered on Disney+ on September 18 with its first two episodes. The other seven episodes will be released weekly.
  1. The Penguin: the new limited series created by Lauren LeFranc, based on the DC Comics character Penguin, which is a spin-off from the film The Batman (2022). It takes place one week following the events of The Batman and explores the Penguin’s rise to power in Gotham City’s criminal underworld. Colin Farrell stars as the Penguin, reprising his role from The Batman, alongside Cristin Milioti. Farrell said the series would further explore the character’s “awkwardness, and his strength, and his villainy” as well as the “heartbroken man inside there” beyond his introduction in The Batman. The series consists of eight episodes and premiered on Max on September 19.
  1. His Three Daughters: a new drama film written and directed by Azazel Jacobs. The film stars Carrie Coon, Natasha Lyonne, and Elizabeth Olsen as three estranged sisters who come back together to care for their aging father. It also stars Rudy Galvan, Jose Febus, Jasmine Bracey, Jay O. Sanders, and Jovan Adepo. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2023, where it received positive reviews. It has an almost perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes and has been described as one of the best films of this year. Especially the three actresses’ performances have been described as “exceptional”. His Three Daughters was released in select theaters in the United States on September 6, before streaming on Netflix on September 20.
  1. The Substance: a new body horror film written and directed by Coralie Fargeat, and starring Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley and Dennis Quaid. It follows Elisabeth Sparkle, star of an aerobics show, who is fired on her 50th birthday by her boss because of her age. When she returns home, her morale at its lowest, she receives an unexpected proposal. A mysterious laboratory offers her a miraculous “substance”: if she injects it, she will become “the best version” of herself, “younger, more beautiful, more perfect”. The film premiered at the 77th Cannes Film Festival earlier this year and was selected to compete for the Palme d’Or in its main competition section, where Fargeat won the Best Screenplay award. The film was released in theatres in the US, UK and some other countries on September 20 and will be released in France on November 6.
  1. Transformers One: a new animated science fiction film based on the Transformers toyline by Hasbro and Takara Tomy. It serves as the eighth installment in the Transformers film series and is directed by Josh Cooley and written by Andrew Barrer, Gabriel Ferrari, Steve Desmond, and Michael Sherman. The ensemble voice cast includes Chris Hemsworth, Brian Tyree Henry, Scarlett Johansson, Keegan-Michael Key, Jon Hamm, Laurence Fishburne, and Steve Buscemi. The film is described as an origin story set on the planet Cybertron and will center on the relationship between Optimus Prime and Megatron going from brothers-in-arms to archenemies. The film was released in theatres on September 20.
  1. Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story: the second season of the biographical crime anthology series Monster, created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan. While in the first season, titled Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, we followed the story of Jeffrey Dahmer, this season centers on the 1989 murders of José (Javier Bardem) and Kitty Menéndez (Chloë Sevigny), who were killed by their sons, Lyle (Nicholas Chavez) and Erik (Cooper Koch). While the prosecution argued they were seeking to inherit their family fortune, the brothers claimed – and remain adamant to this day, as they serve life sentences without the possibility of parole – that their actions stemmed out of fear from a lifetime of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. It was released on Netflix on September 19. It was also announced that there’s a third season coming that will explore the life of serial killer Ed Gein, portrayed by Charlie Hunnam.

Bonus film:

  • Never Let Go: a new horror-thriller film directed by Alexandre Aja from a screenplay by Kevin Coughlin and Ryan Grassby. It stars Halle Berry in the lead role as a mother of twin sons, played by Percy Daggs IV and Anthony B. Jenkins. We follow the mother and her twin sons who have suffered from the torment of a malicious spirit for many years. However, when one of the boys starts to doubt the existence of the evil, the family’s sacred bond is broken, leading to a dangerous fight for survival. The film premiered at Fantastic Fest on September 19, before being released theatrically in the United States on September 20.

Bonus series:

  • Twilight of the Gods: a new adult animated series based on Norse mythology. It’s created by Zack Snyder, Eric Carrasco and Jay Oliva, and features the voices of Sylvia Hoeks, Stuart Martin, Pilou Asbæk, John Noble, Paterson Joseph, Rahul Kohli, Jamie Clayton, Kristofer Hivju, Peter Stormare, Jamie Chung, Lauren Cohan and Corey Stoll. The series refers to events that led to the destruction of Midgard and Asgard, then the death of most of the Æsir and Vanir gods in an ultimate battle against evil, the forces of nature and the Giants. The series was released on Netflix on September 19.
