Six To See Sept 21-27, 2024

  1. The Wild Robot: a new animated scifi survival adventure film based on the book series of the same name by Peter Brown. The film was written and directed by Chris Sanders, produced by Jeff Hermann, and executive-produced by Sanders’ longtime collaborative partner Dean DeBlois. It stars Lupita Nyong’o as Roz, the title character, alongside an ensemble voice cast including Pedro Pascal, Kit Connor, Bill Nighy, Stephanie Hsu, Mark Hamill, and Catherine O’Hara. The film follows the journey of a robot – ROZZUM unit 7134, “Roz” for short – that is shipwrecked on an uninhabited island and must learn to adapt to the harsh surroundings, gradually building relationships with the animals on the island and becoming the adoptive parent of an orphaned gosling. The Wild Robot was released in theatres on September 27.
  1. Wolfs: a new action comedy film written and directed by Jon Watts. The film stars George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Amy Ryan, Austin Abrams, and Poorna Jagannathan. It follows two professional fixers who are forced to work together on a job despite their preference to operate as lone wolves. Wolfs premiered out of competition at the Venice International Film Festival on September 1, and received a limited theatrical release in the United States on September 20, before streaming on Apple TV+ on September 27.
  1. Megalopolis: the new epic science fiction film written, directed and produced by Francis Ford Coppola. The film stars Adam Driver, Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Talia Shire, Jason Schwartzman, Kathryn Hunter, Grace VanderWaal, Chloe Fineman, James Remar, D. B. Sweeney, and Dustin Hoffman. Set in an imagined modern United States, it follows visionary architect Cesar Catilina (Driver) as he clashes with the corrupt Mayor Franklyn Cicero (Esposito) in determining how to rebuild the metropolis of New Rome after a devastating disaster. The film references the characters involved in the Catilinarian conspiracy of 63 BC, including Catiline and Cicero, in addition to Caesar. The film was released in theatres in the United States on September 27.
  1. Apartment 7A: a new psychological thriller film directed by Natalie Erika James from a screenplay she co-wrote with Christian White and Skylar James. It is intended to serve as a prequel to Rosemary’s Baby (1968) and the third film in the Rosemary’s Baby franchise. Julia Garner, Dianne Wiest, Jim Sturgess, and Kevin McNally star. Set in 1965 New York City, the film is said to center around a young dancer who rents a room from an elderly couple. Apartment 7A had its premiere at Fantastic Fest on September 20, before being released simultaneously on Paramount+ and on digital VOD on September 27.
  1. Rez Ball: a new sports drama film directed by Sydney Freeland, who co-wrote the screenplay with Sterlin Harjo, based on the nonfiction sports novel Canyon Dreams, by The New York Times journalist Michael Powell. LeBron James serves as a producer. The film features an ensemble cast, including Jessica Matten, Julia Jones, Amber Midthunder, and Kiowa Gordon. It follows The Chuska Warriors, a Native American high school basketball team from Chuska, New Mexico, who are competing for the state championship title but lose their star player. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 8, and was released on Netflix on September 27.
  1. Killer Heat: a new crime mystery drama film directed by Philippe Lacôte, and written by Roberto Bentivegna and Matt Charman. Based on Jo Nesbø’s short story The Jealousy Man, the film stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Shailene Woodley, and Richard Madden. Set on a remote Greek island, it follows twin brothers who are caught in a violent love triangle. A damaged detective, Nick Bali, also known as The Jealousy Man, is brought in to investigate the case. The film was released on Prime Video on September 26.

Two bonus horror series:

  • From season 3: the third season of the science fiction horror series created by John Griffin. Set in a nightmarish town in Middle America that traps those who enter, we follow unwilling residents who strive to stay alive and search for a way out, plagued by terrifying nocturnal creatures from the surrounding forest and secrets hidden in the town. Most of the cast reprised their roles including Harold Perrineau, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Eion Bailey, David Alpay, Elizabeth Saunders, Scott McCord, Ricky He and Chloe Van Landschoot. Season 3 follows up to the cliffhanger we got at the end of season 2. We’ll finally get to know where Tabitha is and hopefully we will get even more answers to all the questions we have after seeing the first two seasons. The third season of From premiered in the US on September 22 on MGM+ with a new episode releasing weekly. In other countries we still have to wait, but in the meantime you can always watch the other two seasons.
  • Grotesquerie: a new horror drama series created by Ryan Murphy, Jon Robin Baitz, and Joe Baken for FX. Niecy Nash stars in the lead role as Detective Lois Tryon alongside Courtney B. Vance, Lesley Manville, Micaela Diamond, Nicholas Alexander Chavez, Raven Goodwin, and Travis Kelce. It follows Detective Lois Tryon who must work with Sister Megan, a local nun, to figure out the source of a series of heinous crimes that is affecting both their community and their personal lives. The ten-episode series premiered on September 25 on FX with the first two episodes and the rest of the episodes releasing weekly.
