Six To See October 5-11, 2024

Six new films:

  1. Saturday Night: a new biographical comedy-drama film directed by Jason Reitman, about the night of the 1975 premiere of NBC’s Saturday Night, later known as Saturday Night Live. The script was written by Reitman and Gil Kenan, with both also co-producing it alongside Jason Blumenfeld and Peter Rice. The film features an ensemble cast that includes Gabriel LaBelle, Rachel Sennott, Cory Michael Smith, Ella Hunt, Dylan O’Brien, Emily Fairn, Matt Wood, Lamorne Morris, Kim Matula, Finn Wolfhard, Nicholas Braun, Cooper Hoffman, Andrew Barth Feldman, Kaia Gerber, Tommy Dewey, Willem Dafoe, Matthew Rhys, and J. K. Simmons. Saturday Night had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival on August 31, and had a limited theatrical release in the United States on September 27, before its wide release on October 11 on the 49th anniversary of the show’s premiere. The real show is also back with its new season, which is the 50th one, with already two new shows that happened and a new one coming this Saturday with Ariana Grande and Stevie Nicks. Also coming are Michael Keaton and Billie Eilish on October 19 and John Mulaney and Chappell Roan on November 2.
  1. Caddo Lake: a new thriller film written and directed by Celine Held and Logan George. It stars Dylan O’Brien, Eliza Scanlen, Lauren Ambrose, Eric Lange, Sam Hennings, and Diana Hopper. M. Night Shyamalan serves as a producer, so you know there wil be a twist in the film. After an eight year-old girl mysteriously vanishes, connections begin to form between past deaths and disappearances at Caddo Lake. The film was released on Max on October 10.
  1. Terrifier 3: the new slasher film written and directed by Damien Leone, which is the sequel to Terrifier 2 (2022), and the third installment in the Terrifier franchise. It stars David Howard Thornton, Lauren LaVera, Elliott Fullam, and Samantha Scaffidi. Taking place on Christmas, the story follows Sienna Shaw as she attempts to rebuild her life while Art the Clown is in pursuit of her alongside his new accomplice, Victoria Heyes. Following the critical and commercial success of Terrifier 2, Leone began writing for the third film with plans for an overarching narrative. Leone wanted to feature Victoria more prominently, as he regretted leaving the character underdeveloped in the first film. The film features her in an antagonistic role. The script also develops the character of Sienna Shaw further and explores themes of trauma, survivor guilt, and good and evil. Terrifier 3 premiered at Fantastic Fest on September 19, and was released in theatres on October 11.
  1. Lonely Planet: a new romance film written and directed by Susannah Grant. It stars Laura Dern and Liam Hemsworth in the lead roles alongside Diana Silvers, Younès Boucif, Adriano Giannini and Rachida Brakni. Set at a retreat in Morocco, we follow a woman who meets a young man whose acquaintanceship evolves into an intoxicating, life-altering love affair. The film was released on Netflix on October 11.
  1. The Silent Hour: a new crime thriller film written by Dan Hall, directed by Brad Anderson and starring Joel Kinnaman, Sandra Mae Frank, Mekhi Phifer, and Mark Strong. Sixteen months after an on-the-job accident leaves him with hearing loss, a Boston police detective (Kinnaman) and his partner (Strong) are drawn into a life-threatening conflict. They must protect a deaf murder witness (Frank) who lives in a vulnerable apartment building. The antagonist, Lynch (Phifer), leads a team of corrupt cops determined to eliminate the witness to prevent her from testifying, creating a tense standoff within the apartment complex. The film was released in theatres in the United States on October 11.
  1. Hellboy: The Crooked Man: a new superhero horror film, based on the Dark Horse Comics character Hellboy created by Mike Mignola. It is the second reboot of the Hellboy film series and is the fourth live-action entry in the franchise. It is directed by Brian Taylor from a script he wrote with Mignola and Christopher Golden, adapting The Crooked Man limited series written by Mignola. The film stars Jack Kesy as Hellboy, alongside Jefferson White and Adeline Rudolph. Hellboy: The Crooked Man had a limited theatrical release in international markets, beginning in Belgium on June 20 and the United Kingdom on September 27. It was released direct-to-VOD in the United States on October 8. The film received mixed reviews from critics who praised the film’s faithfulness to the source material of The Crooked Man but criticized the CGI effects.

Six new series:

  1. Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft: a new animated action adventure anime series based on the Tomb Raider video game series by Crystal Dynamics, starring Hayley Atwell as the voice of Lara Croft. The series is set in the same continuity as the video game reboot trilogy that started in 2013, and takes place after the events of the 2018 game Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Tasha Huo serves as showrunner and the series follows Lara Croft who faces the challenge of a goddess and a complete new threat in her quest to restore order to the world. Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft was released on Netflix on October 10.
  1. Disclaimer*: a new psychological thriller miniseries written and directed by Alfonso Cuarón, based on the 2015 novel of the same name by Renée Knight. It stars Cate Blanchett in the lead role as Catherine Ravenscroft, a respected journalist and documentarian, who discovers she is a prominent character in a novel that reveals a secret she has tried to keep hidden. Also starring are Kevin Kline, Sacha Baron Cohen, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Louis Partridge, Lesley Manville, HoYeon Jung, Liv Hill, Gemma Jones, and Youssef Kerkour. The series premiered on Apple TV+ on October 11 with the first two episodes.
  1. Teacup: a new horror series created by Ian McCulloch and inspired by the novel Stinger by Robert R. McCammon. It stars Yvonne Strahovski, Scott Speedman, Chaske Spencer, Kathy Baker, Boris McGiver, Caleb Dolden, Émilie Bierre and Luciano Leroux. Set on an isolated ranch in rural Georgia, several people are forced together to face a mysterious threat. The first season of Teacup premiered at Fantastic Fest on September 22 and premiered on Peacock on October 10 with the first two episodes and two episodes releasing weekly.
  1. Citadel: Diana: a new Italian spy action series based on the 2023 American television series Citadel. It stars Matilda De Angelis in the lead role as Diana Cavalieri alongside Lorenzo Cervasio, Maurizio Lombardi, Julia Piaton, Thekla Reuten, Bernhard Schütz, and Filippo Nigro. Set in 2030 Milan, we follow an undercover agent for the global spy agency Citadel who is trapped behind enemy lines as a mole in the powerful enemy syndicate Manticore. The series was released on Prime Video on October 10.
  1. Abbott Elementary season 4: the fourth season of the mockumentary sitcom series created by Quinta Brunson. It stars Brunson as Janine Teagues, a perpetually optimistic second-grade teacher at the underfunded Abbott Elementary, a fictional predominantly Black school in Philadelphia. The ensemble cast includes Tyler James Williams, Janelle James, Lisa Ann Walter, Chris Perfetti, William Stanford Davis, and Sheryl Lee Ralph. The series has already been a big success and is back with another great season. We will follow our group of teachers again as they navigate their job at the school and their own lives. Season 4 of Abbott Elementary premiered on ABC on October 9 and will be released on Disney+ later.
  1. Superman & Lois season 4: the fourth and last season of the superhero drama series developed for The CW by Todd Helbing and Greg Berlanti. It’s based on the DC Comics characters Superman and Lois Lane, created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch star as the title characters Clark Kent / Superman and Lois Lane, respectively. Michael Bishop and Alex Garfin portray the couple’s twin sons Jonathan and Jordan Kent. The series also stars Erik Valdez, Inde Navarrette, Dylan Walsh, and Emmanuelle Chriqui.  Michael Cudlitz makes a special appearance following his guest appearances as Lex Luthor in the previous season. We will follow the Kent family one more time in this new season in which Superman is continuing his fight with the mutated Bizarro, known as Doomsday, as Lex Luthor begins his next plot that involves setting up a new base where the Manning Farm is. Season 4 of Superman & Lois premiered on the CW on October 7 with two new episodes and the rest of the episodes are releasing weekly.
