Anora: a new comedy-drama film written, directed and edited by Sean Baker. It stars Mikey Madison in the title role of an exotic dancer and follows her beleaguered romance with the son of a Russian oligarch. It also stars Mark Eydelshteyn, Yura Borisov, Karren Karagulian, Vache Tovmasyan, and Aleksei Serebryakov. The film premiered in competition at the 77th Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, where it won the Palme d’Or, the first American film to do so since 2011’s The Tree of Life. Anora was released in limited theatres in the US on October 18 and in Canada on October 25, and will be released in several countries next week, including Belgium and France on October 30 and on November 1 in the UK and Ireland.
Conclave: a new mystery-thriller film directed by Edward Berger and written by Peter Straughan, based on the 2016 novel by Robert Harris. The film stars Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, Sergio Castellitto, and Isabella Rossellini. It follows Cardinal Lawrence, who is tasked with organizing the election of the successor to the deceased pope, discovers the former pope had a secret that must be uncovered, concerning one or more of the candidates to succeed to the papacy. Conclave premiered at the Telluride Film Festival on August 30, and was released in theatres in the United States on October 25, and will release in the United Kingdom on November 29. I saw the film last week at Film Fest Ghent and it was one of the best films I saw at the filmfestival.
Venom: The Last Dance: the third and probably last superhero film following the Marvel Comics character Venom. It’s the sequel to Venom (2018) and Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021) and the fifth film in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU). Written and directed by Kelly Marcel, the film stars Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock and Venom, alongside Chiwetel Ejiofor, Juno Temple, Rhys Ifans, Peggy Lu, Alanna Ubach, and Stephen Graham. It follows Eddie and Venom who become wanted fugitives. Hunted by both of their worlds and with the net closing in, the duo are forced into a devastating decision that will determine the fate of their partnership and even their lives. The film was released in theatres on October 25. I went to see it on October 23, when it was released in Belgium. It’s better than the second one and not a bad movie, it’s also not a great movie but it’s fun to watch and to see Hardy again as this character. If you liked the two previous ones, you will also like this one.
Your Monster: a new anti-romantic comedy-horror film written and directed by Caroline Lindy, based on her 2019 short film of the same name. Your Monster premiered in the Midnight section at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival on January 18 and was released in theatres in the United States on October 25. It will be released in other countries later this year.

The film is about a seasoned killer who injects a grieving woman with a paralytic agent. She must run, fight and hide before her body completely shuts down. She has 20 minutes to do so before she is completely paralyzed. The film was released on Netflix on October 25.
