Heretic: a new horror thriller film written and directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods. It stars Hugh Grant, Sophie Thatcher, and Chloe East. When Sister Barnes (Thatcher) and Sister Paxton (East), two missionaries of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, attempt to convert a reclusive Englishman (Grant), it turns out to be far more dangerous than they could have expected. The film had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 8, and was released in theatres in the US on November 8. It was released in the United Kingdom a week earlier, for Halloween, on October 31. In other countries the film is releasing later this month. The film already received positive reviews from critics with Heretic having a score of 94% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The Outrun: a new drama film directed by Nora Fingscheidt from a screenplay she co-wrote with Amy Liptrot, and a story the two co-wrote with Daisy Lewis, based on the 2016 memoir of the same name by Liptrot. A co-production between the United Kingdom and Germany, it stars Saoirse Ronan in the lead role, who also serves as a producer, along with Paapa Essiedu, Nabil Elouahabi, Izuka Hoyle, Lauren Lyle, Saskia Reeves, and Stephen Dillane. It follows Rona, a young woman recently out of rehab for alcoholism, who returns home to the Orkney Islands. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and was also screened at the Berlin International Film Festival in February. The film was already released in theatres in the United Kingdom on September 27 and in several other countries in October, before releasing in even more countries on November 7, including Germany and the Netherlands. I saw the film myself during Film Fest Ghent last month and I really loved it. It was one of the best films I saw at the Film Festival. Ronan is wonderful in the film.
Bird: another film I saw at the Film Festival in Ghent is this new drama film written and directed by Andrea Arnold and starring Nykiya Adams, Barry Keoghan and Franz Rogowski. It follows Bailey, who lives with her brother Hunter and her father Bug, who raises them alone in a squat in northern Kent. Bug doesn’t have much time to devote to them, so Bailey looks for attention and adventure elsewhere. Keoghan dropped out of Gladiator II (2024) to star in this film instead. The film had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, and was released in theaters in the United Kingdom and the United States on November 8, and it will be released in other countries later this month.
Paddington in Peru: the new live-action animated adventure comedy film which is based on the stories of Paddington Bear, created by Michael Bond. It is the third installment in the Paddington film series, and a sequel to Paddington (2014) and Paddington 2 (2017). The film is directed by Dougal Wilson, written by Mark Burton, Jon Foster and James Lamout, and stars Ben Whishaw as the voice of Paddington. Also starring in the film are Hugh Bonneville, Emily Mortimer, Julie Walters, Jim Broadbent, Madeleine Harris, Samuel Joslin, Olivia Colman, Antonio Banderas and Carla Tous. In this film Paddington and his adopted family – the Browns – decide to visit his aunt Lucy in Peru, but circumstances lead them towards misadventures in the Amazon rainforest and mountains of Peru. The film was released in theatres on November 8.
The Best Christmas Pageant Ever: It’s only November, but there are already new Christmas films releasing, including this new Christmas film directed by Dallas Jenkins and based on the children’s novel of the same name by Barbara Robinson. It stars Judy Greer, Pete Holmes, and Lauren Graham. Nobody is ready for the mayhem and surprises that ensue when six of the worst youngsters disrupt the town’s yearly Christmas performance. The Best Christmas Pageant Ever was released in theatres on November 8.
Outer Banks season 4 part 2: the fourth season of this action-adventure mystery teen drama series was released in two parts with the first part that was released on October 10, and now the second part has also been released. The series is created by Josh Pate, Jonas Pate, and Shannon Burke. It’s set in a community in the Outer Banks of North Carolina and follows the conflict between two groups of teenagers in search of a lost treasure. Most of the main actors are back including Chase Stokes, Madelyn Cline, Madison Bailey, Jonathan Daviss, Rudy Pankow, Austin North, Drew Starkey, Carlacia Grant, and Fiona Palomo. The second part of season 4 of Outer Banks was released on Netflix on November 7. A few days ago, ahead of the fourth season part 2 premiere, Netflix renewed the series for a fifth and final season.
