Six To See November 9-15, 2024

  1. Gladiator II: the new sequel to Gladiator (2000) which is directed and co-produced by Ridley Scott. This epic historical drama film was written by David Scarpa, from a story he wrote with Peter Craig. It stars Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Connie Nielsen, and Denzel Washington. The story follows Lucius, the former heir to the Roman Empire, who becomes a gladiator after his home is invaded by the Roman army, led by general Marcus Acacius, during the reign of co-emperors Caracalla and Geta. Gladiator II was released internationally, including the United Kingdom, on November 15, and in Belgium on November 13. It will be released in the United States and Canada next week on November 22. I wanted to go watch it this week, but I’m on vacation right now, so I will be watching the film in theatres next week, when I’m back home.
  1. Arcane season 2: the second season of one of the best animated series is finally here. This second season is being released in three parts with the first one that was released on November 9. The second part is releasing next week on November 16 and the third and last part on November 23. This means that you can already watch the first three episodes right now. This adult animated steampunk action-adventure series is created by Christian Linke and Alex Yee. Set in Riot’s League of Legends universe, it primarily focuses on sisters Vi and Jinx, voiced by Hailee Steinfeld and Ella Purnell. Also voicing a character in the serie are Kevin Alejandro, Katie Leung, Toks Olagundoye, Harry Lloyd, and Mick Wingert. Amidst the escalating unrest between the rich, utopian city of Piltover and the seedy, oppressed underbelly of Zaun, sisters Vi and Jinx find themselves embroiled in a developing conflict over clashing convictions and arcane technologies. Arcane was released to widespread acclaim with several critics and publications considering it as one of the best video game adaptations ever made. Now it’s back with the first three episodes that were released on November 9 and the rest of the episodes releasing on November 16 and 23.

Emilia Pérez: a new musical crime comedy film written and directed by Jacques Audiard, based on Audiard’s opera libretto of the same name, which was in turn loosely adapted from Boris Razon’s 2018 novel Écoute. The film stars Zoe Saldaña, Karla Sofía Gascón, Selena Gomez, Adriana Paz, Mark Ivanir, and Édgar Ramírez, and features a feared cartel leader who enlists a lawyer to help her disappear and achieve her dream of transitioning into a woman. Its original songs were contributed by Camille, while its original score was provided by Clément Ducol. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, and was selected to compete for the Palme d’Or in its main competition section, where it won the Jury Prize and its female ensemble won the Best Actress award. The film was theatrically released in France on August 21, and received a limited theatrical release in the United States and Canada on November 1, before debuting on Netflix on November 13. In other countries you can still see the film in theatres.
  1. Cross: a new crime thriller series created by Ben Watkins, based on the Alex Cross novel series written by James Patterson. It stars Aldis Hodge, Isaiah Mustafa, and Juanita Jennings. The series follows Alex Cross (Hodge), a detective, forensic psychologist, doting father and family man, who is obsessive in digging into the minds of killers and victims in order to identify the victims and catch the killers. Cross was released on Prime Video on November 14.
  1. Red One: the new Christmas action-adventure comedy film directed by Jake Kasdan and written by Chris Morgan, from an original story by Hiram Garcia. The film stars Dwayne Johnson, Chris Evans, Kiernan Shipka, Lucy Liu, Mary Elizabeth Ellis, J. K. Simmons, Nick Kroll and Kristofer Hivju. It follows Callum Drift, the head of North Pole security, who must team up with Jack O’Malley, a bounty hunter, to find and rescue Santa Claus. Red One was released in theatres on November 15.
  1. Silo season 2: the second season of the dystopian science fiction series created by Graham Yost, and based on the Silo trilogy of novels (Wool, Shift, and Dust) by author Hugh Howey. Set in a dystopian future where a community exists in a giant underground silo comprising 144 levels, it stars Rebecca Ferguson as an engineer who becomes embroiled in the mysteries of its past and present. Rashida Jones, David Oyelowo, Common, Tim Robbins, Harriet Walter, Avi Nash, Rick Gomez, and Chinaza Uche also star. This second season of the series premiered on Apple TV+ on November 15.
