Six To See November 30-December 6, 2024

  1. Y2K: a new disaster comedy film directed by Kyle Mooney in his directorial debut. He also wrote the film with Evan Winter and stars in it alongside Jaeden Martell, Julian Dennison, Rachel Zegler, Fred Durst, Daniel Zolghadri, Lachlan Watson, Eduardo Franco, Mason Gooding, The Kid Laroi and Alicia Silverstone. It depicts an imaginative version of the Year 2000 problem. While two loser friends crash a high school party on New Year’s Eve 1999, the bug causes all technology to come to life and turn against humanity. Y2K had its world premiere at South by Southwest on March 9 and was released in theatres in the United States and Canada on December 6.
  1. Creature Commandos: a new adult animated series based on DC Comics featuring the eponymous team. It’s the first television series in the DC Universe (DCU) and the first installment overall. It focuses on a black ops team of monsters assembled by Amanda Waller. All seven episodes were written by James Gunn, with Dean Lorey as showrunner and Yves “Balak” Bigerel as supervising director. Steve Agee, Maria Bakalova, Anya Chalotra, Zoë Chao, Frank Grillo, Sean Gunn, David Harbour, Alan Tudyk, Indira Varma, and Viola Davis star in the series. Following the events of the first season of Peacemaker, Amanda Waller is no longer able to put human lives in jeopardy for her clandestine operations as she did with the Suicide Squad and Team Peacemaker. Instead, she assembles a black ops team of monsters called the Creature Commandos led by General Rick Flag Sr. Creature Commandos premiered on Max on December 5 with its first two episodes. The other five episodes will be released weekly.
  1. Black Doves: a new British spy thriller series created by Joe Barton and developed by Sister and Noisy Bear. It stars Keira Knightley in the lead role as Helen Webb, alongside Sarah Lancashire, Ben Whishaw, Andrew Koji, Andrew Buchan, Omari Douglas, and Tracey Ullman. It follows Helen, who begins a passionate affair that may endanger her secret identity, when her lover becomes victim to London’s underworld and her employers send an old friend to protect her. The series was released on Netflix on December 5. Ahead of its premiere, it was renewed for a second season.
  1. Star Wars: Skeleton Crew: the new Star Wars series created by Jon Watts and Christopher Ford. It is part of the Star Wars franchise, taking place in the same time frame as the The Mandalorian series and its interconnected spin-offs after the events of the film Return of the Jedi (1983). Skeleton Crew tells a coming-of-age story about four children who make a discovery on their home planet, get lost in the galaxy, and go on an adventure to get back home. Jude Law stars in the series with Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Kyriana Kratter, Robert Timothy Smith, Tunde Adebimpe, Kerry Condon, and Nick Frost. Skeleton Crew premiered on Disney+ on December 2 with its first two episodes. The other six episodes will be released weekly.
  1. Nightbitch: a new black comedy body horror film written and directed by Marielle Heller, based on the 2021 novel by Rachel Yoder. The film stars Amy Adams, Scoot McNairy, Arleigh Snowden, Emmett Snowden, Zoë Chao, Mary Holland, Ella Thomas, Archana Rajan, and Jessica Harper. It concerns a magical realism-style story of a stay-at-home mom who sometimes transforms into a dog. Nightbitch premiered at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival, where Adams won the Tribute Performer Award. The film was released in theatres in the US, Canada, UK and Ireland on December 6.
  1. The Return: a new drama film directed by Uberto Pasolini and starring Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche in the lead roles, alongside Charlie Plummer, Tom Rhys Harries, Marwan Kenzari, Claudio Santamaria, and Amir Wilson. The film is a retelling of Homer’s Odyssey as adapted by Edward Bond, John Collee and Pasolini. It follows Odysseus (Fiennes), who washes up on the shores of his home island Ithaca after twenty years fighting in and returning from the Trojan War. Scarred by his experiences, he is unrecognisable from the mighty warrior king that left, 20 years before. His wife Penelope (Binoche) is now a prisoner in her own home, hounded by many suitors to choose a new husband that would take the throne. Odysseus and Penelope’s son Telemachus (Plummer) is facing death at the hands of those who see him as a threat to their ambitions. Odysseus is forced to face his past in order to save his family and win back that which he has lost. The Return premiered at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival on September 7, and was released in theatres in the US on December 6.
