The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim: a new anime fantasy film based on characters created by J.R.R. Tolkien. It’s directed by Kenji Kamiyama from a screenplay by Jeffrey Addiss & Will Matthews and Phoebe Gittins & Arty Papageorgiou. The film stars Brian Cox, Gaia Wise, Luke Pasqualino, and Miranda Otto. The War of the Rohirrim is set 183 years before Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings film trilogy (2001–2003) and tells the story of Helm Hammerhand (Cox), a legendary king of Rohan, and his family as they defend their kingdom against an army of Dunlendings. The film was released in theatres on December 13.
Kraven the Hunter: a new superhero film featuring the Marvel Comics character of the same name. Directed by J. C. Chandor from a screenplay by Richard Wenk and the writing team of Art Marcum and Matt Holloway, the film stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson in the title role, alongside Ariana DeBose, Fred Hechinger, Alessandro Nivola, Christopher Abbott, and Russell Crowe. It is intended to be the sixth film in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU) and explores Kraven’s complex relationship with his father and his path to becoming the greatest and most feared hunter. The film was released in theatres on December 13. It will supposedly be the last film in the SSU.
The Last Showgirl: a new drama film directed by Gia Coppola and written by Kate Gersten. It stars Pamela Anderson, Jamie Lee Curtis, Dave Bautista, Brenda Song, Kiernan Shipka, Billie Lourd and Jason Schwartzman. It follows Shelly (Anderson), a seasoned showgirl, who after a successful thirty-year run, must plan her future after the show closes abruptly. The film had its world premiere at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival in September and was released in limited theatres in the United States on December 13, before a wide expansion on January 10, 2025. In other countries the film is releasing in the first few months of 2025. It already received generally positive reviews from critics and also received two nominations at the Golden Globe Awards for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama for Anderson and Best Original Song for “Beautiful That Way”, which was announced earlier this week.
Secret Level: a new adult animated anthology series created by Tim Miller, which is produced by his Blur Studio with Amazon MGM Studios. Dave Wilson executive produces and serves as supervising director. It consists of 15 stories set in the worlds of different video games, like Armored Core, Concord, Dungeons & Dragons, Pac-Man, Sifu, and The Outer Worlds. The voice cast includes Arnold Schwarzenegger, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Kevin Hart, Laura Bailey, Heaven Hart, Keanu Reeves, Gabriel Luna, Ariana Greenblatt, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Michael Beach, Emily Swallow, and Claudia Doumit. Half of the episodes of the series were released on Decmeber 10, and the other half releases next week on December 17.
Carry-On: a new action thriller film directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and written by T.J. Fixman. The film stars Taron Egerton, Sofia Carson, Danielle Deadwyler, Logan Marshall-Green, Theo Rossi, Dean Norris, Sinqua Walls, Josh Brener, Curtiss Cook, and Jason Bateman. Its plot follows Ethan Kopek, a young TSA officer, who is blackmailed by a mysterious traveler into letting a dangerous package onboard an upcoming flight during Christmas Day. Carry-On was released on Netflix on December 13.
Dexter: Original Sin: the new prequel series to Dexter. This crime drama mystery series is created by Clyde Phillips with Patrick Gibson starring as Dexter Morgan and Michael C. Hall reprising his role as narrator of the inner voice of Dexter Morgan. Also starring are Christian Slater, Molly Brown, Christina Milian, Alex Shimizu, Reno Wilson, James Martinez, and Patrick Dempsey with Sarah Michelle Gellar as a special guest star playing the role of Tanya Martin. Set in 1991, it follows a young Dexter Morgan, who begins his internship as a forensic technician for the Miami Metro Police Department while transitioning into an avenging serial killer. When his bloodthirsty urges can no longer be ignored, Dexter must control his inner darkness. With the help from his foster father Harry, he adopts the Code designed to help him find and kill other serial killers while staying under the radar of law enforcement. The series premiered on Paramount+ with Showtime on December 13 with a new episode releasing weekly.
