Mufasa: The Lion King: the newest live-action film from Disney, which is a prequel and sequel to remake of The Lion King from 2019. This musical drama film is directed by Barry Jenkins from a screenplay written by Jeff Nathanson. Donald Glover, Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner, John Kani, and Beyoncé Knowles-Carter reprise their roles from the remake. New cast members include Aaron Pierre, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Tiffany Boone, Mads Mikkelsen, Thandiwe Newton, Lennie James, Anika Noni Rose, and Blue Ivy Carter in her feature film debut. In the Pride Lands of Tanzania after the events of The Lion King, Rafiki the mandrill tells the origin story of two lions, Mufasa and Taka, to Kiara, the granddaughter of Mufasa and daughter of Simba and Nala. The story follows the orphan Mufasa, who is befriended by the young prince Taka and adopted by Taka’s family; the pair become as close as brothers. Timon the meerkat and Pumbaa the warthog add color commentary. The film was released in theatres on December 20.
Oh, Canada: a new drama film written and directed by Paul Schrader, based on the 2021 novel Foregone by Russell Banks. It stars Richard Gere, Uma Thurman, Michael Imperioli, Jacob Elordi, Victoria Hill, and Kristine Froseth. In the film, a dying filmmaker (played by Gere in the present and Elordi in flashbacks) sits for a final interview, during which he admits that his status as a progressive icon is built on a foundation of lies and half-truths, and that he has repeatedly used and discarded his family and friends. The film marked the second collaboration between Gere and Schrader after American Gigolo (1980) as well as Schrader’s second adaptation of a novel by Banks after 1997’s Affliction. The film had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival this year and was released in theatres in the US on December 6 and in Canada on December 13. Now the film was also released in theatres in France, and it will be released in even more countries in January 2025.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3: the third film in the Sonic the Hedgehog-franchise. This action-adventure comedy film is based on the video game series published by Sega, and was directed by Jeff Fowler from a screenplay by Pat Casey, Josh Miller, and John Whittington, based on a story by Casey and Miller. Jim Carrey, Ben Schwartz, Colleen O’Shaughnessey, Natasha Rothwell, Shemar Moore, James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, and Idris Elba reprise their roles, with Krysten Ritter and Keanu Reeves joining the cast. In the film, Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles have to defeat a new enemy, Shadow the Hedgehog, at the request of the military organization G.U.N. Unable to defeat him by themselves, the trio forms an unlikely alliance with Dr. Robotnik in hopes of stopping Shadow and protecting the planet. However, the matter is complicated when Robotnik is reunited with his long-lost grandfather, Gerald Robotnik, who has his own sinister plans. The film was released in theatres on December 20.
The Six Triple Eight: a new war drama film written and directed by Tyler Perry. The film is based on the 2019 WWII History magazine article “Fighting a Two-Front War” by Kevin M. Hymel on the contributions of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, an all-black and all-female battalion, in World War II. The film features an ensemble cast which includes Kerry Washington, Ebony Obsidian, Milauna Jackson, Kylie Jefferson, Shanice Shantay, Sarah Jeffery, Pepi Sonuga, Moriah Brown, Gregg Sulkin, Susan Sarandon, Dean Norris, Sam Waterston and Oprah Winfrey. The Six Triple Eight was released in select cinemas on December 6, before streaming on Netflix on December 20.
Ferry 2: the second film about Ferry Bouman, which takes place in the universe of Undercover and Ferry the series. In 2021 a first film from Ferry was released, which was a prequel to Undercover, the series in which we were introduced to Ferry. In 2023 Ferry the series was released, which followed up to what happened in the film. Now a second film was released in which we follow Ferry again. Frank Lammers reprises his role as Ferry alongside Huub Smit who also reprises his role as Dennis. They are joined by new cast members like Aiko Mila Beemsterboer, Tobias Kersloot, Marouane Meftah, Hamza Othman, Jonas Smulders, Kendrick Etmon, and Charlie-Chan Dagelet. In the film we follow Ferry, who seems to have found peace away from Brabant’s underworld after losing his drug empire. On the surface, he seems to be doing well, surrounded by superficial contacts. But deep down, his inner voice haunts him, preventing true happiness. Ferry’s past is filled with violence, lies, and a trail of betrayal. He battles with his conscience while trying to keep a low profile. Why would our tough yet charming drug lord come out of retirement for one last trick? Ferry 2 was released on Netflix on December 20.
Virgin River season 6: the sixth season of the romantic drama series based on the Virgin River novels by Robyn Carr. It follows Melinda “Mel” Monroe, who answers an ad to work as a midwife and nurse practitioner in the remote Northern California town of Virgin River, thinking it will be the perfect place to start fresh and leave her painful memories behind. But she soon discovers that small-town living is not quite as simple as she expected. Alexandra Breckenridge stars as Mel alongside Martin Henderson, Colin Lawrence, Jenny Cooper, Lauren Hammersley, Annette O’Toole, Tim Matheson, Ben Hollingsworth, Marco Grazzini, Mark Ghanimé, and Kandyse McClure. Season 6 of the series was released on Netflix on December 19. Ahead of the sixth season premiere, the series was renewed for a seventh season.
