  1. Nosferatu: the new gothic horror film written and directed by Robert Eggers. It is a remake of the 1922 silent film Nosferatu, which was an unauthorised adaptation of Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula. The film features an ensemble cast including Bill Skarsgård, Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, Simon McBurney, and Willem Dafoe, while also reuniting Eggers with the frequently collaborating cinematographer Jarin Blaschke. Set in 1830s Germany, Nosferatu follows real estate salesman Thomas Hutter, who is tasked with finding a new residence for wealthy Transylvanian Count Orlok. While trying to fulfill the task, Hutter learns that Orlok, a vampire, is infatuated with his wife, Ellen Hutter. The film was released on December 25 in several countries including the US, Canada and France, and it will be released in even more countries next week on January 1 and 2.
  1. A Complete Unknown: the new biographical musical drama film directed by James Mangold, who co-wrote the screenplay with Jay Cocks. Based on the 2015 book Dylan Goes Electric! by Elijah Wald, the film portrays Bob Dylan through his earliest folk music success until the momentous controversy over his use of electric instruments at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. Timothée Chalamet (who also produces) stars as Dylan, with Edward Norton, Elle Fanning, Monica Barbaro, Boyd Holbrook, Dan Fogler, Norbert Leo Butz, and Scoot McNairy in supporting roles. The film’s title is derived from the chorus of Dylan’s 1965 single “Like a Rolling Stone”. It received three nominations at the Golden Globe Awards, which are happening on January 5, 2025. The film was released in on December 25 in the US and Canada, and it will be released in other countries in January and February of 2025.
  1. What If…? Season 3: the third and final season of the animated anthology series created by A. C. Bradley. It’s based on the Marvel Comics series of the same name and explores alternate timelines in the multiverse that show what would happen if major moments from the MCU films occurred differently. Bradley served as head writer for the first two seasons, with Matthew Chauncey taking over for the third, and Bryan Andrews as the lead director. Jeffrey Wright stars as the Watcher, who narrates the series, alongside many MCU film actors reprising their roles. In this third season that includes Anthony Mackie, Mark Ruffalo, Sebastian Stan, Kathryn Hahn, David Harbour, Samuel L. Jackson, Chris Hemsworth, Simu Liu, and Tom Hiddleston. This third and final season of the series premiered on December 22 on Disney+ with a new episode releasing weekly until December 29.
  1. Squid Game season 2: the second season of the South Korean dystopian survival thriller horror series created, written and directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk. The series revolves around a secret contest where 456 players, all of whom are in deep financial hardship, risk their lives to play a series of deadly children’s games for the chance to win a ₩45.6 billion prize. The series’ title draws from squid, a Korean children’s game. Hwang conceived the idea based on his own economic struggles, as well as the class disparity in South Korea and capitalism. It became Netflix’s most-watched series and now it’s back for a second season. Season 2 of the series follows Gi-hun, who had vowed revenge one year later after winning the Squid Game. He returns and joins the game again to take revenge on the Front Man and end the game for good. He is joined by police officer Jun-ho, the Front Man’s brother, who will help him stop the game and his brother. In the game, he will once again team up with new players, including his friend Jung-bae, to try to ensure that as many players as possible can survive. The Front Man, now in full control of the game following Il-nam’s death, will try to make Gi-hun see that there is no way he can end the games due to the true nature of people. Lee Jung-jae is reprising his role as Gi-hun, alongside Wi Ha-joon, Lee Byung-hun, Im Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Sung-hoon, Lee Jin-wook, Yang Dong-geun, Jo Yu-ri, Kang Ae-shim, and Lee Seo-hwan. The second season of Squid Game was released on Netflix on December 26. A third and final season is coming and is in development. It is expected to be released in 2025.
  1. Better Man: a new semi-biographical musical film about British pop singer Robbie Williams. It was co-written, produced and directed by Michael Gracey. Williams is portrayed as a chimpanzee with CGI, performed by Jonno Davies using motion capture, and voiced by both Williams and Davies. Steve Pemberton and Alison Steadman also star. Better Man premiered at the Telluride Film Festival this summer, and was released in theatres in the US on December 25, and in Australia and the UK on December 26. It will also be released in other countries in January 2025.
  1. The Fire Inside: a new biographical sports film by Rachel Morrison in her feature directorial debut. The film is about American professional boxer Claressa “T-Rex” Shields training for the 2012 Summer Olympics. Ryan Destiny stars as the lead, alongside Brian Tyree Henry, Oluniké Adeliyi and De’Adre Aziza. The Fire Inside premiered in the Special Presentations section of the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this year and was released in theatres in the US on December 25.
