Six To See January 11-17, 2025

    1. Babygirl: the new erotic thriller film written, directed, and produced by Halina Reijn. The film stars Nicole Kidman in the lead role as Romy Mathis, a high-powered CEO who puts her career and family on the line when she begins an affair with a much younger intern (Harris Dickinson). Sophie Wilde and Antonio Banderas also star in the film. Babygirl premiered at the 2024 Venice International Film Festival, where Kidman won the Volpi Cup for Best Actress, followed by a premiere at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival. The film was released in theatres in the US on December 25, and on January 10 in several other countries like the UK and Ireland. Now it was also released in even more countries like Belgium, France and Australia.
    1. Wolf Man: a new horror film directed by Leigh Whannell, who co-wrote it with Corbett Tuck. It’s a reboot of The Wolf Man from 1941 and stars Christopher Abbott, Julia Garner, and Sam Jaeger. The film follows family man Blake who relocates from San Francisco to Oregon with his workaholic wife Charlotte and daughter Ginger after inheriting his childhood home, left vacant following his estranged father’s mysterious disappearance and presumed death. At the farmhouse at night during a full moon, the family is attacked by a werewolf that claws Blake’s arm. They barricade themselves inside the home, but soon Blake begins to transform into something horrifying, jeopardizing the safety of his wife and daughter. Wolf Man was released in theatres on January 17.
    1. Severance season 2: the second season of the science fiction psychological thriller series created by Dan Erickson and directed by Ben Stiller and Aoife McArdle. It stars Adam Scott, Zach Cherry, Britt Lower, Tramell Tillman, Jen Tullock, Dichen Lachman, Michael Chernus, John Turturro, Christopher Walken, and Patricia Arquette. The plot follows Mark Scout (Scott), an employee of the fictional corporation Lumon Industries who agrees to a “severance” program in which his non-work memories are separated from his work memories. This second season of Severance premiered on Apple TV+ on January 17 with a new episode releasing weekly.
    1. One of Them Days: a new buddy comedy film directed by Lawrence Lamont and written by Syreeta Singleton. It stars Keke Palmer and SZA in the lead roles Dreux and Alyssa. When her boyfriend takes her rent money, Alyssa and her roommate race against the clock to avoid eviction and keep their friendship intact. Also starring are Vanessa Bell Calloway, Keyla Monterroso Mejia, Maude Apatow, Katt Williams, Joshua Neal, Aziza Scott, Patrick Cage, Dewayne Perkins, Amin Joseph, Gabrielle Dennis, Dominque Perry, Lil Rel Howery, and Janelle James. The film was released in the theatres in the US on January 17.
    1. Harley Quinn season 5: the fifth season of the adult animated black comedy superhero series based on the DC Comics character of the same name created by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm. The series is written and executive-produced by Justin Halpern, Patrick Schumacker, and Dean Lorey. It follows the adventures of Harley Quinn and her best friend and partner Poison Ivy after leaving her boyfriend, the Joker. This fifth season of Harley Quinn premiered on HBO Max on January 16 with a new episode releasing weekly.
    1. Back in Action: a new action comedy film directed by Seth Gordon from a script he co-wrote with Brendan O’Brien. The film stars Jamie Foxx, Cameron Diaz, Andrew Scott, Jamie Demetriou, Kyle Chandler, and Glenn Close. It follows former CIA spies Emily and Matt who are pulled back into espionage after their secret identities are exposed. Diaz came out of retirement for this film. The last one she starred in was Annie from 2014. Back in Action was released on Netflix on January 17.

    This week there were also two series on Netflix that were back with a second season:

    • First of all we have XO, Kitty that’s back. This romantic comedy drama series is created by Jenny Han and is a spin-off of the To All the Boys film series (itself an adaptation of Han’s book trilogy To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before). It marks the first Netflix television series to be spun-off from a Netflix original film. Han serves as writer and executive producer in addition to being a showrunner. Anna Cathcart reprises the title role as Kitty Song Covey, a high school student who goes on her own journey to find true love. Season 2 of XO, Kitty was released on Netflix on January 16.
    • The anime series Castlevania: Nocturne is also back. This adult animated dark fantasy action series is created and written by Clive Bradley and led by producer Kevin Kolde. A sequel to the Castlevania animated series, it is based on the video game series of the same name by Konami and adapted from the 1993 entry Castlevania: Rondo of Blood and its 1997 sequel Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Set in 1792, during the French Revolution, it follows Richter Belmont, a descendant of the Belmont family fighting against vampires and night creatures. The series stars Edward Bluemel, Thuso Mbedu, Pixie Davies, Richard Dormer, Sydney James Harcourt, Nastassja Kinski, Zahn McClarnon, Aaron Neil, Sophie Skelton, Elarica Johnson, Franka Potente and Iain Glen in the voice cast. Season 2 of Castlevania: Nocturne was released on Netflix on January 16.
