Filmfestival Oostende 2025 was a blast

Last week it was the Filmfestival of Ostend. That whole week I went to see a whole bunch of films, so many I didn’t have the time to post this before. But now that it’s over, I can give you a recap of my week, which started on Monday when I saw Samia and Mexico 86. These two films were good and brought me to a whole new place, first to Somalia with Samia, which is inspired by true events, and then to Mexico. The director of Mexico 86, César Diaz, was present that night for the premiere of his film.

On Tuesday I saw three films: The Indian film All We Imagine as Light, the Italian-French film Parthenope and the Bob-Dylan-biopic A Complete Unknown. These were all very good films, but my favorite of the day was A Complete Unknown. Timothée Chalamet is amazing as Bob Dylan and the film deserves all the awards.

It was also the premiere of Fiore Mio, the new film from Paolo Cognetti, who received a star on the walk of fame the next day. That day, on wednesday, I saw two films again, Soft Leaves, which was shown a few days ago with the cast present, and Traffic, which premiered that night with the director Teodora Mihai and one of the cast members present.

On Wednesday Cognetti was not the only person receiving a star. Dutch actor Gijs Scholten van Aschat, who stars in the lead role in the film Alpha. that premiered on the festival, also received one. He was on the red carpet later with the director of the film Jan-Willem van Ewijk.

On Thursday I first saw Sing Sing with Colman Domingo in the lead role, then it was time for The Seed of the Sacred Fig. In the evening the series Safe Harbor premiered. And it was also the fifth edition of the Jamies that night. Both films I saw that day were really good and at the end of Sing Sing I even had tears in my eyes. These two films are really a must-see.

On Friday I only saw one film, September 5, because in the evening it was time for the biggest night of the festival, the Ensors, which is like the Flemish Oscars. All the big film and tv stars were present. The two films that were nominated the most also won the most awards. Both Julie Zwijgt and Holy Rosita won five Ensors. The award for Best Film went to Skunk, which also won a second Ensor for Best Make Up.

On Saturday it was the last day of the Filmfestival and it ended with the closing film 2050, a documentary from Eric Goens. I saw two last films that day, starting with Queer from director Luca and with Daniel Craig in the lead role. It’s a little weird but good. You also see a whole other part of Craig in this film. I ended my filmfestival on Saturday night watching the film Saturday night. As a fan of SNL I really liked this film. So it couldn’t end better.

It was an amazing edition once again with a lot of amazing films and a lot of beautiful stars. Up to the next edition next year.
