Six To See March 15-21, 2025

  1. The Residence: a new mystery drama series created by Paul William Davies and produced by Shondaland. It’s inspired by The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House by Kate Andersen Brower and revolves around a fictional murder scandal involving the staff of the White House. Starring in the series are Uzo Aduba, Giancarlo Esposito, Susan Kelechi Watson, Jason Lee, Ken Marino, Edwina Findley, Randall Park, Molly Griggs. Set in “upstairs, downstairs, and backstairs” of the White House, it follows Cordelia Cupp, an eccentric detective, who arrives on the premises in order to solve a murder which happened during a state dinner. During the investigation, interpersonal conflicts between 157 personnel of the residence start to unfold. The Residence, which consists of eight episodes, was released on Netflix on March 20.
  1. The Alto Knights: a new biographical crime drama film directed by Barry Levinson and written by Nicholas Pileggi. The film stars Robert De Niro in a dual role as 1950s mob bosses Vito Genovese and Frank Costello, with Debra Messing, Cosmo Jarvis, Kathrine Narducci, and Michael Rispoli in supporting roles. It follows Vito Genovese and Frank Costello, two Italian-American mob bosses, with Genovese ordering a hit on Costello. Costello survives but is wounded in the attempt and ultimately decides to retire from the Mafia. The Alto Knights was released in theatres in the United States on March 21.
  1. Snow White: the new musical fantasy film directed by Marc Webb and written by Erin Cressida Wilson. It’s a live-action reimagining of Walt Disney Productions’s 1937 animated film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, which itself is based on the 1812 fairy tale Snow White by the Brothers Grimm. The film stars Rachel Zegler, Andrew Burnap, and Gal Gadot. There were already a lot of pre-release controversies, with criticism levied against the color-blind casting, story changes, Zegler’s public critiques of the original film, and reimagining of the Seven Dwarfs. So we will have to see how the film does at the box office. Snow White was released in theatres on March 21.
  1. O’Dessa: a new post-apocalyptic musical drama film written and directed by Geremy Jasper. It stars Sadie Sink, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Murray Bartlett, and Regina Hall. Set in a post-apocalyptic future, the film follows O’Dessa, a farm girl who goes on a journey to retrieve a family heirloom and rescue her one true love. O’Dessa had its world premiere at SXSW earlier this month and was released on Hulu in the US and on Disney+ internationally on March 20.
  1. The Assessment: a new science fiction thriller film written by Dave Thomas, Nell Garfath-Cox and John Donnelly and directed by Fleur Fortuné in her feature length debut. The film stars Elizabeth Olsen, Alicia Vikander, Himesh Patel, Indira Varma, Nicholas Pinnock, Charlotte Ritchie, Leah Harvey, and Minnie Driver. It’s set in the near future, where prospective parents must pass an initial test in order to prove their suitability for parenthood, and then endure a seven-day live-in visit from a facilitator known as the assessor who will put them through the wringer in all kinds of imaginable and unimaginable situations where, at the end, they will either get a passing grade – or not. The film follows Mia and Aaryan who are assigned an assessor named Virginia, and as they begin the uncomfortable tests, their relationship begins to crumble. The Assessment premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 8, 2024, and was released in theatres in the United States on March 21.
  1. Locked: a new action thriller film directed by David Yarovesky and starring Bill Skarsgård and Anthony Hopkins. It is an English-language remake of the Argentinian 2019 action film 4×4. It follows a young, flippant carjacker who is trapped in a heavily modified car by a mysterious sociopath, who intends to teach him the “consequences” of his lifestyle. Locked was released in theatres in the US and UK on March 21, and will be released in other countries next month.
