- The Amateur: a new action spy film directed by James Hawes and written by Ken Nolan and Gary Spinelli. It’s based on the 1981 novel of the same name by Robert Littell, which was previously adapted into a Canadian film that same year. The film stars Rami Malek, Rachel Brosnahan, Caitríona Balfe, Jon Bernthal, Michael Stuhlbarg, Holt McCallany, Julianne Nicholson, Adrian Martinez, Danny Sapani, and Laurence Fishburne. We follow Charles Heller, a CIA cryptographer, who loses his wife in a London terrorist attack and realizes his bosses will not act due to conflicting internal priorities. Having blackmailed the agency to train him as a field operative, Charles embarks on a one-man mission to hunt down his wife’s killers. The Amateur was released in theatres on April 11.
- Drop: a new thriller film directed by Christopher Landon, and written by Jillian Jacobs and Chris Roach. The film stars Meghann Fahy, Brandon Sklenar, Violett Beane, Jacob Robinson, Reed Diamond, Ben Pelletier, Gabrielle Ryan, Jeffery Self, Ed Weeks, and Travis Nelson. It follows Violet, a widowed mother, who is on a date with Henry when she is terrorized by a series of anonymous messages to her phone. The caller instructs her to tell nobody, and follow increasingly malicious instructions, or her younger sister, Jen, and her son, Toby will be killed, culminating with her being told to kill Henry. The title is a reference to the AirDrop feature on Apple’s iPhone, which allows you to share pictures and videos with other phones within your proximity. Drop had its premiere at the SXSW last month and was released in theatres on April 11.
- Warfare: a new war action film written and directed by Ray Mendoza and Alex Garland. Based on Mendoza’s experiences during the Iraq War as a former U.S. Navy SEAL, the film follows, in real-time, a platoon of Navy SEALs on a mission through insurgent territory in November 2006 during the final stages of the Battle of Ramadi. It stars an ensemble cast that includes D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai as Mendoza alongside Will Poulter, Cosmo Jarvis, Joseph Quinn, Kit Connor, Finn Bennett, Taylor John Smith, Michael Gandolfini, Adain Bradley, Noah Centineo, Evan Holtzman, Henry Zaga, and Charles Melton. Warfare was released in theatres in the United States and Canada on April 11, and on April 9 in Belgium, and is releasing next week in even more countries like the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Germany.
- Black Mirror Season 7: the seventh season of the anthology series created by Charlie Brooker. The series explores various genres, with most episodes set in near-future dystopias containing sci-fi technology – a type of speculative fiction. The series is inspired by The Twilight Zone and uses the themes of technology and media to comment on contemporary social issues. This seventh season of the series consists of six episodes with one of those episodes being a sequel to the now-classic Season 4 opener, USS Callister, in which a video game programmer invents a simulated reality where he’s captain of a spacecraft, his co-workers are his crew, and the sci-fi adventures they embark on take a decidedly sinister turn. This is the first time they did a sequel on the series. This episode stars Cristin Milioti, Jimmi Simpson, Billy Magnussen, Milanka Brooks, Osy Ikhile, and Paul G. Raymond. There is also another episode that has a link with the special interactive film Bandersnatch with Will Poulter and Asim Chaudhry reprising their roles as Colin Ritman and Mohan Thakur. Other cast members for season seven are Chris O’Dowd, Rashida Jones, Tracee Ellis Ross, Emma Corrin, Issa Rae, Awkwafina, Peter Capaldi, Paul Giamatti. Season seven of Black Mirror was released on Netflix on April 10.
- G20: a new action thriller film directed by Patricia Riggen and written by Caitlin Parrish, Erica Weiss, and Logan & Noah Miller. The film stars Viola Davis in the lead role, alongside Anthony Anderson, Marsai Martin, Ramón Rodríguez, Antony Starr, Douglas Hodge, Elizabeth Marvel, Sabrina Impacciatore, and Clark Gregg. It follows U.S. President Danielle Sutton (Davis) who must defend her family, fellow leaders and the world when the G20 summit in Cape Town, South Africa is taken over by terrorists. G20 was released on Prime Video on April 10.
- The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6: the sixth and final season of the dystopian series created by Bruce Miller. It’s based on the 1985 novel of the same name by Canadian author Margaret Atwood and premiered with its first season in 2017. Now we’re eight years later and the last season premiered, more than two years after the previous season. The plot features a dystopia following a Second American Civil War wherein a theonomic, totalitarian society subjects fertile women, called “Handmaids”, to child-bearing slavery. Elisabeth Moss is back as June Osborne, alongside Yvonne Strahovski, Madeline Brewer, Ann Dowd, O-T Fagbenle, Max Minghella, Samira Wiley, Amanda Brugel, Bradley Whitford, Sam Jaeger, and Ever Carradine. Season six of The Handmaid’s Tale premiered on Hulu in the US on April 8 with the three first episodes and the rest of the episodes releasing weekly.

- Sacramento: a new road comedy film directed by Michael Angarano, who wrote the screenplay with Chris Smith. It stars Angarano, Michael Cera, Kristen Stewart and Maya Erskine. The film follows Rickey (Angarano) and Glenn (Cera) who take an impromptu road trip from Los Angeles to Sacramento. The film had its world premiere at the 2024 Tribeca Festival and already received positive reviews from critics. Sacramento was released in theatres in the United States on April 11.
Bonus series:
- Your Friends and Neighbors: a new drama series from Jonathan Tropper, starring Jon Hamm, Olivia Munn, Amanda Peet, Mark Tallman, Hoon Lee, Lena Hall and Aimee Carrero. Hamm stars as Andrew Cooper or Coop, a New York hedge fund manager who is recently divorced and becomes unemployed. He uses criminal methods to maintain his lifestyle and keep his family living to the standard to which they’ve become accustomed. The series premiered on April 11 with its first two episodes and the rest of the episodes are being released weekly. Your Friends and Neighbors has already been renewed for a second season.
