Sinners: a new period supernatural horror film written, produced, and directed by Ryan Coogler. Set in the 1930s in the Southern United States, the film stars Michael B. Jordan in a dual role as twin brothers Elijah “Smoke” and Elias “Stack”, who return to their hometown but are faced with a greater evil. The film also features Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O’Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, Omar Miller, Li Jun Li, and Delroy Lindo. Coogler and Jordan already worked together on films several times, like Black Panther, Fruitvale Station and the Creed-films. Sinners was released in theatres on April 18.
The Last of Us season 2: the second season of the post-apocalyptic drama series created by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann. Based on the video game franchise developed by Naughty Dog, the series is set twenty years into a pandemic caused by a mass fungal infection, which causes its hosts to transform into zombie-like creatures and causes the collapse of society. After the succes of the first season, which was based on the first game The Last of Us, now it’s back with its second season, which is based on the game The Last of Us Part II. It follows Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey), who have settled in Jackson, Wyoming, with Joel’s brother Tommy (Gabriel Luna) and Ellie’s friends Dina (Isabela Merced) and Jesse (Young Mazino). This second season introduces Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, who seeks revenge against Joel, and Spencer Lord, Tati Gabrielle, Ariela Barer, and Danny Ramirez as her friends Owen, Nora, Mel, and Manny, respectively. Season 2 of The Last of Us premiered on HBO Max on April 13 with a new episode releasing weekly. A third season is already in development, which means that the second game will be split into these two seasons.
Ransom Canyon: a new romantic western series based on the Jodi Thomas series of books. It’s developed by April Blair and stars Josh Duhamel, Minka Kelly, Lizzy Greene, Eoin Macken, Garrett Wareing, Marianly Tejada, Jack Schumacher, Andrew Liner, and James Brolin. This series is a romance-fueled family drama and contemporary western saga that charts the intersecting lives and loves of three ranching families set against the sweeping tundras and rolling rivers of Texas hill country. Ransom Canyon was released on Netflix on April 17.
The Wedding Banquet: a new romantic comedy film directed by Andrew Ahn and co-written by Ahn and James Schamus. It’s not a remake of the 1993 film of the same name. It stars Bowen Yang, Lily Gladstone, Kelly Marie Tran, Han Gi-chan, Joan Chen, and Youn Yuh-jung. The film follows a gay man who makes a deal with his lesbian friend: a green-card marriage for him, in exchange for in vitro fertilization treatments for her. Plans evolve as Min’s grandmother surprises them with a Korean wedding banquet. The Wedding Banquet premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and was released in theatres in the United States and Canada on April 18. The film will also be released in other countries starting next month.
Government Cheese: a new historical surrealist comedy drama series created by Paul Hunter and Aeysha Carr. It stars David Oyelowo, Simone Missick, Bokeem Woodbine, Adam Beach, and Sunita Mani. Set in 1969, the series follows the Chambers family, an African American family living in the San Fernando Valley, and the chaos that arises after burglar-turned-inventor Hampton Chambers returns from prison. Hampton tries to start over with a second chance by inventing the “Bit Magician”, a self-sharpening power drill. However, the unconventional structure of the Chambers family formed in his absence, moments from his past, run-ins with shady and dangerous figures, and even instances of seeming divine intervention complicate matters. Government Cheese premiered on Apple TV+ on April 16 with four episodes. The six remaining episodes of the season are being released weekly.
Doctor Who season 2 (series 15): Ncuti Gatwa is back as the Fifteenth Doctor in this fifteenth series of the British science fiction series. This series is also known as “Season Two” following the production changes and the acquisition of Doctor Who’s international broadcasting rights by Disney+ prior to the previous series. It is the sixth series led by Russell T Davies as head writer and executive producer and the second since his return to the show in 2023, having previously worked on it from 2005 to 2010. This series is set to be the fifteenth to air following the programme’s revival in 2005, and is the forty-first season overall. This is the second series to star Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor, an incarnation of the Doctor, an alien Time Lord who travels through time and space in the TARDIS, which appears to be a British police box from the outside. Varada Sethu joins the series as new companion Belinda Chandra, with Millie Gibson also set to feature as Ruby Sunday, the previous series’ companion. Doctor Who season 2 (series 15) premiered on BBC in the UK and on Disney+ internationally on April 12 with a new episode releasing weekly.
