Six To See April 26-May 2, 2025

  1. Thunderbolts*: the new superhero film based on Marvel Comics featuring the team Thunderbolts. Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it is the 36th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The film was directed by Jake Schreier from a screenplay by Eric Pearson and Joanna Calo, and stars an ensemble cast featuring Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, Wyatt Russell, Olga Kurylenko, Lewis Pullman, Geraldine Viswanathan, David Harbour, Hannah John-Kamen, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. In the film, a group of antiheroes are caught in a deadly trap and forced to work together on a dangerous mission. Thunderbolts* was released in theatres on May 2. Here in Belgium the film was released on April 30, which is also the day I went to see the film in the cinema. I really liked it and is one of the best Marvel films from the past few years. It’s a fun film that mixes action and comedy, and that you should see in theatres on the big screen.
  1. Another Simple Favor: the sequel to A Simple Favor, with Paul Feig returning as the director. This black comedy mystery film was written by Jessica Sharzer and Laeta Kalogridis. Anna Kendrick, Blake Lively, Henry Golding, Andrew Rannells, Bashir Salahuddin, Joshua Satine, and Ian Ho reprise their roles from the first film, with Michele Morrone, Elena Sofia Ricci, Elizabeth Perkins, Alex Newell, and Allison Janney joining the cast. The film takes place on the island of Capri, Italy, where a murder transpires at Emily’s extravagant wedding to an Italian businessman. Another Simple Favor premiered at the South by Southwest Festival earlier this year and was released on Prime Video on May 1.
  1. The Eternaut: a new Argentine science fiction series created by Bruno Stagnaro, and based on the comic of the same name by Héctor Germán Oesterheld and Francisco Solano López. The series is set in Buenos Aires, when one summer’s night a mysterious deadly snowfall wipes out most of the population and leaves thousands stranded. It follows Juan Salvo and his friends who embark on a desperate struggle for survival. Everything changes when they discover that the toxic snowstorm is only the first attack by a foreign army invading Earth. The only way to stay alive is to join together and fight. No one will survive on their own. The series stars Ricardo Darín, Carla Peterson, César Troncoso, Andrea Pietra, Ariel Staltari, Marcelo Subiotto, Mora Fisz, Claudio Martínez Bel, and Orianna Cárdenas. The Eternaut was released on Netflix on April 30.
  1. The Four Seasons: a new comedy miniseries written by Tina Fey, Lang Fisher, and Tracey Wigfield. It’s an adaptation of the 1981 film of the same name and also a mini series in 1984, and stars Fey, Steve Carell, Colman Domingo and Will Forte. The series follows three suburban couples who vacation together each season, but tensions arise when one couple splits up and the husband brings a much younger woman on subsequent trips. The Four Seasons was released on Netflix on May 1.
  1. Rust: the new Western film written and directed by Joel Souza. It stars Alec Baldwin (who also produced and co-wrote the story with Souza), Patrick Scott McDermott, Josh Hopkins, Frances Fisher, Jake Busey, Devon Werkheiser and Travis Fimmel. The film gained notoriety for a shooting incident in 2021, wherein cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was accidentally killed when a live round was discharged from a prop revolver that Baldwin was using. It’s set in 1880s Kansas and follows elderly outlaw Harland Rust who comes out of hiding to rescue his 13-year-old grandson Lucas Hollister, after he is sentenced to hang for an accidental killing. Now fugitives, the pair have to outrun the vicious bounty hunter Fenton “Preacher” Lang. Rust premiered at the Polish film festival Camerimage on November 20, 2024, and was released in theatres in the US on May 2.
  1. Carême: a new French-language historical comedy erotic drama series, created by Kelly and Davide Serino and directed by Martin Bourboulon. The series is inspired by the book Cooking for Kings: The Life of Antonin Carême, The First Celebrity Chef by Ian Kelly. It’s a biographical series about Antonin Careme, who rose from humble beginnings to become known as one of the world’s first celebrity chefs during the Napoleonic era. However, his newfound ‘celebrity’ placed him in the gaze of politicians who want to use him as a spy and twinned with his desire to escape poverty, he might be tempted to do so. The cast is led by Benjamin Voisin as Careme, alongside Lyna Khoudri and Jérémie Renier. Carême premieres globally on Apple TV+ on April 30.
