Murderbot: a new science fiction action comedy series based on the book series The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells. The series stars Alexander Skarsgård as the titular character, alongside David Dastmalchian, Noma Dumezweni, Sabrina Wu, and Anna Konkle. Chris Weitz and Paul Weitz wrote, directed and produced the series with Wells involved as a consulting producer. It follows a partly biological security cyborg that privately calls itself Murderbot. He must hide its ability for free thought whilst completing dangerous assignments and is simultaneously drawn to humans and appalled at their weakness. Murderbot premiered on Apple TV+ on May 16 with two episodes and new episodes are releasing weekly.
Final Destination Bloodlines: the new supernatural horror film directed by Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein and written by Guy Busick and Lori Evans Taylor, based on a story developed by them and Jon Watts. It is the sixth installment in the Final Destination film series following Final Destination 5 (2011). The film stars Kaitlyn Santa Juana as a college student who inherits her grandmother’s sudden premonition about death and tries to save her entire family after they start dying one by one. Teo Briones, Richard Harmon, Owen Patrick Joyner, Rya Kihlstedt, Anna Lore, Brec Bassinger, and Tony Todd appear in supporting roles. Final Destination Bloodlines was released in theatres on May 16.
Duster: a new crime thriller series created by J. J. Abrams and LaToya Morgan. The series stars Josh Holloway, Rachel Hilson and Keith David. It’s set in the Southwest in 1972, and follows the FBI’s first Black woman agent Nina Hayes (Hilson) working to stop a crime syndicate with the assistance of a talented getaway driver Jim Ellis (Holloway). Duster premiered on HBO Max on May 15 with a new episode releasing weekly.
Love, Death + Robots Volume 4: the fourth volume or season of the adult animated anthology series created by Tim Miller. Although the series is produced by Blur Studio, individual episodes are produced by different animation studios from a range of countries and explore diverse genres, particularly comedy, horror, science fiction, and fantasy. Each episode is connected to one or more of the three titular concepts. Miller serves as the showrunner and producer alongside Joshua Donen, David Fincher, and Jennifer Miller; most episodes are written by Philip Gelatt, and are adaptations of short stories. Volume 4 of Love, Death + Robots consists of ten episodes and was released on Netflix on May 15.
Hurry Up Tomorrow: the new musical psychological thriller film directed and edited by Trey Edward Shults. The film serves as a companion piece to Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye’s sixth studio album of the same name, which was produced in conjunction with the film. Shults wrote the screenplay with Tesfaye and Reza Fahim, who also produced the film with Kevin Turen and Harrison Kreiss. The film stars Tesfaye as a fictionalized version of himself, an insomniac musician on the verge of a mental breakdown who is pulled into an existential odyssey by a mysterious stranger. Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan also star. The film was released in theatres in the US and Canada on May 16.
Overcompensating: a new comedy drama series created by Benito Skinner, who stars in the lead role as Benny, a closeted former football player, who becomes friends with a college outsider to fit in. Also starring in the series are Wally Baram, Mary Beth Barone, Adam DiMarco, Rish Shah in the lead roles and Holmes, Connie Britton, Kyle MacLachlan, and Kaia Gerber in recurring roles. There are also guest appearances by Charli XCX, Megan Fox, Lukas Gage, Bowen Yang, Matt Rogers, and James Van Der Beek. Overcompensating was released on Prime Video on May 15.
