Six To See May 17-23, 2025

  1. Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning: the new Mission: Impossible film, which is the eighth installment in the Mission: Impossible film series. This action spy film is directed by Christopher McQuarrie from a screenplay he co-wrote with Erik Jendresen, and is the sequel to Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One. Tom Cruise, Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Esai Morales, Henry Czerny, Pom Klementieff and Angela Bassett reprise their roles from the previous films. It follows Ethan Hunt and the IMF team who continue their search for the terrifying AI known as the Entity – which has infiltrated intelligence networks all over the globe – with the world’s governments and a mysterious ghost from Ethan’s past on their trail. Joined by new allies and armed with the means to shut the Entity down for good, Hunt is in a race against time to prevent the world as we know it from changing forever. With an estimated budget of $300–400 million, it is one of the most expensive films ever made. The Final Reckoning had its world premiere in Tokyo on May 5, 2025, was screened out of competition at the 78th Cannes Film Festival on May 14, and was released in theatres on May 23. The film received positive reviews from critics, and I also really like the film, which I saw earlier this week. It has a few amazing action sequences and there is also some emotional parts in the film. If you liked the previous Mission: Impossible films and love action, you should see it in theatres.
  1. Lilo & Stitch: the new live-action remake of Disney’s 2002 traditionally animated film of the same name. This science fiction comedy film is directed by Dean Fleischer Camp and written by Chris Kekaniokalani Bright and Mike Van Waes. It stars Maia Kealoha in her film debut as Lilo Pelekai, with original Lilo & Stitch writer-director Chris Sanders reprising his voice role as Stitch. It also stars Sydney Elizebeth Agudong, Hannah Waddingham, Judge Reinhold, Zach Galifianakis, and Courtney B. Vance, with original cast members Tia Carrere, Amy Hill, and Jason Scott Lee also appearing. The film follows a lonely human girl named Lilo who adopts a dog-like alien named Stitch to mend her fractured family. Unaware that Stitch is genetically engineered to be a force of destruction, he is being pursued by aliens and social workers, while Lilo teaches Stitch the idea of family. Lilo & Stitch was released in theatres on May 23.
  1. Fear Street: Prom Queen: a new slasher film directed by Matt Palmer from a screenplay he co-wrote with Donald McLeary, based on the novel The Prom Queen (1992) from the Fear Street book series. It is the fourth installment in the Fear Street film series. The film stars India Fowler, Suzanna Son, Fina Strazza, David Iacono, Ella Rubin, Chris Klein, Ariana Greenblatt, Lili Taylor and Katherine Waterston. It follows students at Shadyside High who are preparing for the 1988 prom, while the “It Girls” are fighting to get support to be voted Prom Queen. As an unusual nominee emerges in the race, some of the other candidates begin to vanish without a trace. Fear Street: Prom Queen was released on Netflix on May 23.
  1. Nine Perfect Strangers Season 2: the second season of the drama series based on the 2018 novel of the same name by Liane Moriarty. It’s created by David E. Kelley, who also developed the series alongside John-Henry Butterworth. Nicole Kidman stars in the lead role reprising her role as Masha Dmitrichenko, the Russian founder of the wellness resort, Tranquillum House. The series was initially a miniseries, but has been renewed for a second season as an anthology series. In this second season Kidman is joined by an ensemble cast which includes Aras Aydın, Christine Baranski, Murray Bartlett, Dolly de Leon, Lucas Englander, Henry Golding, Annie Murphy, Lena Olin, King Princess, Maisie Richardson-Sellers, and Mark Strong. Season 2 of Nine Perfect Strangers premiered on Hulu in the US and on Prime Video internationally on May 21.
  1. Sirens: a new black comedy limited series created by Molly Smith Metzler, based on her 2011 play Elemeno Pea. The story unfolds throughout one explosive weekend at a lavish beach estate. The series is described as an “incisive, sexy, and darkly funny exploration of women, power and class.” It stars Meghann Fahy, Milly Alcock, Glenn Howerton, Bill Camp, Felix Solis, Kevin Bacon, and Julianne Moore. The series follows Devon who is concerned about her sister Simone’s creepy relationship with her new boss, billionaire Michaela, and decides it’s time for an intervention. Sirens, which consists of five episodes, was released on Netflix on May 22.
  1. Fountain of Youth: a new heist action adventure film directed by Guy Ritchie and written by James Vanderbilt. It stars John Krasinski, Natalie Portman, Eiza González, Domhnall Gleeson, Arian Moayed, Laz Alonso, Carmen Ejogo, and Stanley Tucci. The plot follows a pair of estranged siblings (Krasinski and Portman) who team up and embark on a journey to find the famed Fountain of Youth. Fountain of Youth was released on Apple TV+ on May 23.

Bonus:

  • Big Mouth Season 8: the eighth and last season of the adult animated coming-of-age sitcom created by Andrew Goldberg, Nick Kroll, Mark Levin, and Jennifer Flackett. The series centers on students based on Kroll and Goldberg’s upbringing in suburban New York, with Kroll voicing his fictionalized younger self. Big Mouth explores puberty while embracing an openness about the human body and sex. With its eight seasons Big Mouth is one of Netflix’s longest-running original scripted series ever produced. Season 8 of Big Mouth was released on Netflix on May 23.
