Films:
- How to Train Your Dragon: the new live-action remake of the 2010 animated film of the same name, itself loosely based on the 2003 novel by Cressida Cowell. This fantasy adventure film is co-executive produced, written, and directed by Dean DeBlois. It stars Mason Thames, Nico Parker, Gabriel Howell, Julian Dennison, Bronwyn James, Harry Trevaldwyn, Peter Serafinowicz, and Nick Frost, with Gerard Butler reprising his role as Stoick the Vast from the animated films. Just like in the animated films, we follow the friendship between Hiccup, an inventive Viking, and Toothless, a Night Fury dragon. How to Train Your Dragon was released in theatres on June 13 and already received positive reviews. A sequel is scheduled to be released on June 11, 2027.
- Materialists: a new romance film written and directed by Celine Song. The film stars Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, Zoë Winters, Marin Ireland, Louisa Jacobson, and Pedro Pascal. Set against the backdrop of New York City’s luxury-driven dating culture, it follows a love triangle between a matchmaker, her aspiring actor ex-boyfriend, and a charming billionaire. The project marks Song’s second feature following Past Lives (2023), and continues her exploration of intimacy, identity, and modern relationships. Materialists was released in theatres on June 13 and received positive reviews from critics.
- Echo Valley: a new thriller film directed by Michael Pearce, written by Brad Ingelsby, and starring Julianne Moore, Sydney Sweeney, Domhnall Gleeson, Kyle MacLachlan, and Fiona Shaw. The story follows a woman who lives on a farm in Pennsylvania and discovers that her daughter has come to her in an alarming state. The film received a limited theatrical release in the United States and Canada on June 6, ahead of being released on Apple TV+ on June 13.
- 28 Years Later: the new post-apocalyptic horror film which is the third installment in the 28 Days Later film series, following 28 Days Later (2002) and 28 Weeks Later (2007). It was produced and directed by Danny Boyle, and written by Alex Garland. The film stars Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Ralph Fiennes. It marks the returns of Boyle, Garland, and cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle to the series, all of whom worked on the original film, with Cillian Murphy also serving as executive producer. The film is set twenty-eight years after the Rage virus escaped a medical research laboratory. Survivors have found ways to exist amidst the infected. One group lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily defended causeway. When a father and his son leave the island on a mission into the dark heart of the mainland, they discover the secrets, wonders and horrors of the outside world. 28 Years Later was released in theatres on June 20. It was shot back-to-back with its sequel 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, which was directed by Nia DaCosta, written by Garland, and produced by Boyle and Garland.
- Elio: a new animated science fiction adventure film produced by Pixar Animation Studios for Walt Disney Pictures. It’s directed by Madeline Sharafian, Domee Shi, and Adrian Molina, and written by Julia Cho, Mark Hammer, and Mike Jones. The film stars the voices of Yonas Kibreab, Zoe Saldaña, Remy Edgerly, Brad Garrett, Jameela Jamil, and Shirley Henderson. It follows an eleven-year-old boy named Elio Solis (Kibreab) who accidentally becomes the intergalactic ambassador of planet Earth after being beamed up to the Communiverse by aliens for making contact. He must form new bonds with eccentric alien lifeforms and navigate a crisis of intergalactic proportions. Elio was released in theaters on June 20, and has received positive reviews from critics.
- Bride Hard: a new action comedy film directed by Simon West and written by Shaina Steinberg, from a story by Steinberg and CeCe Pleasants. It stars Rebel Wilson as a secret agent who serves as the maid of honor at her childhood best friend’s lavish wedding, which is taken hostage by mercenaries. The film also stars Anna Camp, Anna Chlumsky, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Gigi Zumbado, Stephen Dorff, and Justin Hartley. Bride Hard was released in theatres on June 20.
Series:
- Revival: a new supernatural horror noir series based on the American comic book series of the same name by Tim Seeley and Mike Norton, and published by Image Comics. It’s created by Aaron B. Koontz and Luke Boyce, and stars Melanie Scrofano, Romy Weltman, David James Elliott, and Andy McQueen. Set in a rural Wisconsin town, the sudden resurrection of the recently deceased becomes known as “Revival Day”. The newly revived maintain their appearance, memories, and personalities from their previous lives. While the town’s residents grapple with the miraculous event, local police officer Dana Cypress investigates a murder mystery where everyone, including both the living and the undead, are suspects. Revival premiered on June 12 on Syfy in the United States and CTV Sci-Fi Channel in Canada with a new episode releasing weekly.
- FUBAR Season 2: the second season of the action comedy series created by Nick Santora. It stars Arnold Schwarzenegger in his first leading role in a scripted live-action television series. Also starring are Monica Barbaro, Milan Carter, Fortune Feimster, Travis Van Winkle, Fabiana Udenio, Jay Baruchel, Aparna Brielle, and Andy Buckley. They are joined by Guy Burnet, Enrico Colantoni and Carrie-Anne Moss in this second season. The series follows Luke Brunner and his daughter Emma who have lied to each other for years, with neither of them knowing that the other is a CIA operative. Once they both learn the truth, they realize that they do not actually know anything about each other. They are required by their superiors to work together on dangerous operations, leading to challenges when Luke treats Emma as a child and when he becomes overly concerned for her safety and relationship conflicts. Season 2 of FUBAR was released on Netflix on June 12.
- We Were Liars: a new psychological thriller series based on the 2014 novel of the same name by E. Lockhart. It’s developed by Julie Plec and Carina Adly Mackenzie, who are also the showrunners of the series. It stars Emily Alyn Lind, Caitlin FitzGerald, Mamie Gummer, Candice King, Rahul Kohli, Shubham Maheshwari, Esther McGregor, Joseph Zada, and David Morse. It follows the story of Cady Sinclair, a 17 year old girl from a wealthy family, who survived a horrible accident at her family’s summer home two years ago that she cannot remember. She returns, determined to remember the details of her accident but as the pieces start to come together, she discovers not only the painful truth of that night, but a shocking revelation about herself. We Were Liars was released on Prime Video on June 18.
- The Buccaneers season 2: the second season of the historical drama series created by Katherine Jakeways, based on the unfinished novel of the same name by American novelist Edith Wharton, published posthumously in 1938. Set in the 1870s during the Gilded Age, it revolves around five wealthy and ambitious American women and their experiences in London high society as they deal with culture clashes, differing approaches to tradition, friendship, and love. The series stars an ensemble cast led by Kristine Froseth, Alisha Boe, Aubri Ibrag, Josie Totah, and Imogen Waterhouse. Matthew Broome, Josh Dylan, Barney Fishwick, Guy Remmers, Mia Threapleton, and Christina Hendricks also star. They are joined by Leighton Meester in this second season. Season two of The Buccaneers premiered on Apple TV+ on June 18 with a new episode releasing weekly.
- The Waterfront: a new drama series created by Kevin Williamson, who also wrote several episodes. It stars Holt McCallany, Maria Bello, Melissa Benoist, Jake Weary, Rafael L. Silva, Humberly González, Danielle Campbell, and Brady Hepner. Inspired by true events, the series dives into the flawed Buckley family as their attempts to retain control of their crumbling North Carolina fishing empire drive them to increasingly dangerous means to keep themselves afloat. The Waterfront was released on Netflix on June 19.
- The Gilded Age season 3: the third season of the historical drama series created and written by Julian Fellowes. It is set in the United States during the Gilded Age, the boom years of the 1880s in New York City. The series follows Marian Brook, a young woman entering 1882 New York City’s rigid social scene who is drawn into daily conflicts surrounding the new money Russell family and her old money van Rhijn-Brook family. The two are neighbors across 61st Street near Fifth Avenue on the Upper East Side of New York. The series explores conflicts of new money, who made their money through industrialism, and old money, who have inherited wealth, the African-American upper class, and the domestic workers who tend to all of their needs. It has an ensemble cast which includes Carrie Coon, Morgan Spector, Louisa Jacobson, Denée Benton, Taissa Farmiga, Harry Richardson, Blake Ritson, Cynthia Nixon, and Christine Baranski. Season 3 of The Gilded Age premiered on HBO Max on June 22 with a new episode releasing weekly.
