28 Years Later: The Bone Temple: the sequel to 28 Years Later that released last year. This post-apocalyptic horror film was directed by Nia DaCosta and written by Alex Garland. It was shot back-to-back with 28 Years Later and serves as the fourth installment overall in the 28 Days Later film series. The film stars Ralph Fiennes, Jack O’Connell, Alfie Williams, Erin Kellyman, and Chi Lewis-Parry, and takes place after the events of the previous film. It follows Spike who is inducted into Sir Jimmy Crystal’s gang of acrobatic killers in a post-apocalyptic Britain ravaged by the Rage Virus. Meanwhile, Dr. Ian Kelson forms a new relationship with potentially world-changing consequences. 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is releasing in theatres this week. A sequel to The Bone Temple is in development.
The Rip: a new action thriller film written and directed by Joe Carnahan who developed the story with Michael McGrale. The film stars Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor, Sasha Calle, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Scott Adkins, Kyle Chandler, Néstor Carbonell, and Lina Esco. It follows a group of Miami cops who discovers a stash of millions in cash, leading to distrust as outsiders learn about the huge seizure, making them question who to rely on. The Rip will be released on Netflix on January 16.
Ponies: a new spy thriller series created by Susanna Fogel and David Iserson. It stars Emilia Clarke and Haley Lu Richardson in the lead roles, alongside Adrian Lester, Artjom Gilz, Nicholas Podany, Petro Ninovskyi, Vic Michaelis, and Maxim Gall. The series is set in 1977 and follows two secretaries working at the American embassy in Moscow who become CIA operatives after their husbands die under mysterious circumstances. Ponies will premiere on January 15 on Peacock.
Hijack season 2: the second season of the thriller series created by George Kay and Jim Field Smith, with Idris Elba starring in the lead role. Also reprising their roles are Christine Adams, Max Beesley, and Archie Panjabi. They are joined by Christian Näthe, Clare-Hope Ashitey, Lisa Vicari, Toby Jones, Karima McAdams, and Christiane Paul. The series premiered in 2023 and is coming back this week with its second season. Unlike Season 1 (which took place entirely aboard a hijacked airplane), season 2 shifts the high-stakes action to a Berlin underground train. Sam Nelson (Elba) must again navigate tense negotiations and life-or-death choices as commuters are taken hostage deep below the city. Season 2 of Hijack is premiering on January 14 on Apple TV.
Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials: a new mystery series adapted by Chris Chibnall from Agatha Christie’s 1929 novel of the same name. It stars Mia McKenna-Bruce, Helena Bonham Carter and Martin Freeman in the lead roles, alongside Edward Bluemel, Nyasha Hatendi, Corey Mylchreest, Guy Siner, and Alex Macqueen. The series is set in 1925 when a country house party prank turns deadly. Lady Eileen “Bundle” Brent investigates the chilling murder plot. Lady Caterham and Superintendent Battle assist in solving the country house mystery that changes Bundle’s life. Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials is releasing on Netflix on January 15.
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy: the newest series in the Star Trek franchise. It’s created by Gaia Violo and is intended to be the 12th Star Trek series. Set in the 32nd century, the far-future time period that was introduced in the series Star Trek: Discovery (2017-2024), Starfleet Academy follows the first new class of Starfleet cadets in over a century as they come of age and train to be officers. Sandro Rosta, Karim Diané, Kerrice Brooks, George Hawkins, and Bella Shepard portray Starfleet Academy cadets, starring alongside Holly Hunter, Zoë Steiner, Robert Picardo, Tig Notaro, and Oded Fehr. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is premiering on Paramount+ on January 15, with its first two episodes. The other eight episodes will be released weekly.
