A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: the new series in the world of Game of Thrones. This fantasy drama series is created by Ira Parker and George R. R. Martin. A prequel to Game of Thrones, it is the third television series in Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire franchise and is an adaptation of the Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas. It stars Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan the Tall (“Dunk”), the titular hedge knight, and Dexter Sol Ansell as his squire Aegon Targaryen (“Egg”). Also starring are Finn Bennett, Bertie Carvel, Tanzyn Crawford, Daniel Ings, and Sam Spruell. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms premiered on HBO Max on January 18, and will consist of six episodes. Ahead of the first season premiere, the series was renewed for a second season, which is expected to be released in 2027.
The Beauty: a new science fiction body horror series created by Ryan Murphy and Matt Hodgson. It is based on the comic book The Beauty, written by Jeremy Haun and Jason A. Hurley, and stars Evan Peters, Anthony Ramos, Jeremy Pope, Ashton Kutcher, and Rebecca Hall. The series is set in a world where a sexually transmitted treatment known as “the Beauty” spreads rapidly, granting users physical attractiveness through aesthetic-based genetic makeup while concealing lethal side effects that begin to overtake their lives. As deaths and public panic escalate, an FBI investigation and competing interests converge on the forces behind the drug and the epidemic it sparks. The Beauty is premiering on Disney+ on January 21 with the first three episodes. The rest of the episodes are being released weekly.
Mercy: a new science fiction film directed by Timur Bekmambetov, written by Marco van Belle, produced by Charles Roven and Bekmambetov. It stars Chris Pratt and Rebecca Ferguson in the lead roles, alongside Annabelle Wallis, Kylie Rogers, Kali Reis, and Chris Sullivan. Set in 2029 Los Angeles, we follow a detective who stands on trial accused of murdering his wife. He has 90 minutes to prove his innocence to the advanced AI judge he once championed, before it determines his fate. Mercy is releasing in theatres this week, including in the US on January 23.
Return to Silent Hill: a new supernatural psychological horror film, which is the third installment in the Silent Hill film series. Based on the video game Silent Hill 2, it is co-written and directed by Christophe Gans, who also directed the first Silent Hill film in 2006. It stars Jeremy Irvine and Hannah Emily Anderson in the lead roles, alongside Evie Templeton as Laura. She performed the motion capture and voice of Laura in the Silent Hill 2 game remake. The film follows James (Irvine), who is devastated after being separated from his soulmate. He receives a mysterious letter that leads him back to a town called Silent Hill, where he hopes to find her. However, he discovers that the town has been changed by some unknown malevolent force and as he delves deeper into the town, he finds terrifying figures, both familiar and unfamiliar. Doubting his mental stability, he tries to comprehend reality and hopes to stay strong enough to rescue his beloved. Return to Silent Hill will be released in theatres in several countries this week, including the US on January 23, and in two weeks in even more countries, including Belgium and France on February 4.
Steal: a new thriller series created by S.A. Nikias, who also wrote it. Sam Miller produces and directs three of the six episodes. It stars Sophie Turner, Archie Madekwe and Jacob Fortune-Lloyd. We follow Zara, an office worker who gets caught up in a major heist. Steal is premiering on Prime Video on January 21.
Finding Her Edge: a new Canadian drama series starring Madelyn Keys, Cale Ambrozic, Olly Atkins, Harmon Walsh, Alexandra Beaton, and Alice Malakhov. It is a live-action adaptation of the best-selling young adult novel Finding Her Edge by Jennifer Iacopelli. The book, and thus the show, draws inspiration from Jane Austen’s Persuasion, meaning it blends heartfelt romance with themes of personal growth and second chances. The series centers on Adriana Russo (Keys) and her family’s legacy in competitive figure skating, where love and ambition collide. Finding Her Edge will be released on Netflix on January 22.
