This weekend the biggest night for films happened with the Oscar ceremony. Two days earlier it was also the biggest night for French films with the César Awards, the French Oscars. Here is a recap of the two award shows with the full list of winners.
At the César Awards the big winner was Emilia Pérez, winning seven awards, including Best Director and Best Film. Hafsia Herzi became the first non-white actress to win Best Actress for Borgo and Best Actor was for Karim Leklou for his role in Jim’s Story.
Souleymane’s Story (L’Histoire de Souleymane) won four awards, including Best Supporting Actress for Nina Meurisse. The Count of Monte Cristo (Le Comte de Monte-Cristo) and Holy Cow (Vingt Dieux) both won two awards. American actress Julia Roberts and Greek-French filmmaker Costa-Gavras received the Honorary César.

The award season ended last night with the Academy Awards alias the Oscars. Host of the night was Conan O’Brien. Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande opened the ceremony singing some songs from Wicked, including Defying Gravity. And there was a tribute to James Bond with Lisa, Doja Cat and Raye singing a Bond song. There was also a tribute to Quincy Jones with Queen Latifah performing.
The big winner of the night was Anora winning five Oscars, including Best Actress, Best Director and Best Picture. Sean Baker made history becoming the first person to win four Oscars for the same film in one evening.
Best Actor went to Adrien Brody, who won his second Oscar in this category. The Brutalist also won two other Oscars. Dune: Part Two, Wicked and Emilia Pérez all took two Oscars home. Paul Tazewell became the first Black man to win the Oscar for Best Costume Design for his work on Wicked.
Zoe Saldaña won Best Supporting Actress for her role in Emilia Pérez and Kieran Culkin won Best Supporting Actor for his role in A Real Pain. The Substance and Conclave both won one Oscar as well and Flow took home the award for Best Animated Film, becoming the first film from Latvia to win an Oscar. It was also a great night for Brazil with I’m Still Here winning Best International feature.
