Six films to see:

  1. Project Hail Mary: This scifi film is directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and written by Drew Goddard. It is based on the 2021 novel of the same name by Andy Weir. The film stars Ryan Gosling as Ryland Grace, a scientist who wakes up alone on a spaceship with no memory of his mission, only to discover he must save Earth with the help of an alien companion. Sandra Hüller, James Ortiz and Lionel Boyce also star. Project Hail Mary was released in theatres on March 20, and became one of the biggest hits of the year. It’s a beautiful film that will become an instant classic. I saw it the week it was released and really loved it.
  1. Ready or Not 2: Here I Come: This horror-comedy film is a direct sequel to Ready or Not (2019), with Samara Weaving reprising her role as Grace MacCaullay. It’s directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, and written by Guy Busick and R. Christopher Murphy. The cast also includes Kathryn Newton, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Shawn Hatosy, David Cronenberg, and Elijah Wood. The story continues the deadly game concept introduced in the first film, expanding the mythology of the Le Domas family and the mysterious “Le Bail” entity. It follows Grace (Weaving) as she must protect her estranged sister (Newton) while being hunted by several elite families in a high-stakes ritual to claim a seat of ultimate power. The film premiered at SXSW and was released in theatres on March 20.
  1. They Will Kill You: This action comedy horror film is directed by Kirill Sokolov, from a script co-written with Alex Litvak. The film stars Zazie Beetz, Myha’la, Paterson Joseph, Tom Felton, Heather Graham, and Patricia Arquette. Its plot follows an ex-convict who answers an ad to be a housekeeper at a mysterious New York City high-rise, not realizing she is entering a community that has seen a number of disappearances over the years. They Will Kill You was released in theatres in the US on March 27.
  1. Forbidden Fruits: This comedy horror film is directed by Meredith Alloway from a screenplay she co-wrote with Lily Houghton, and is based on Houghton’s stage play Of the woman came the beginning of sin, and through her we all die. It stars Lili Reinhart, Lola Tung, Victoria Pedretti, Alexandra Shipp, Emma Chamberlain, and Gabrielle Union. The story revolves around a group of women drawn into a dark, cult-like situation tied to themes of desire and punishment. Forbidden Fruits had its world premiere at the South by Southwest Film & TV Festival, before being released by Independent Film Company and Shudder on March 27.
  1. Pretty Lethal: This action thriller film is directed by Vicky Jewson and written by Kate Freund. The film stars Iris Apatow, Lana Condor, Millicent Simmonds, Avantika, Maddie Ziegler, and Uma Thurman. In this film, a dysfunctional ballet troupe is forced to take shelter when their bus breaks down enroute to a prestigious competition and must use their training to fight back when a gang of armed men target them. Pretty Lethal premiered at the South by Southwest Film & TV Festival on March 13, and was released worldwide on Prime Video on March 25.
  1. Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice: This scifi action comedy crime film is written and directed by BenDavid Grabinski and produced by Andrew Lazar. It stars Vince Vaughn, James Marsden, Eiza González, Keith David, and Jimmy Tatro. The plot follows two friends who navigate the dangerous world of organized crime, testing their loyalty and survival skills as they get deeper into the criminal underworld. The film premiered at the South by Southwest Film & TV Festival on March 14, before releasing worldwide on Disney+ and Hulu on March 27.

Six series to see:

  1. Daredevil: Born Again Season 2: The second season of the Marvel series created by Dario Scardapane and Matt Corman & Chris Ord. Marvel’s revival series continues Matt Murdock’s fight for justice in a darker, more politically unstable New York. Charlie Cox returns as Daredevil, alongside Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk and Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page. Krysten Ritter also returns as Jessica Jones. Season 2 expands the conflict between vigilantes and Fisk’s growing political power. The second season of Daredevil: Born Again premiered on Disney+ on March 4. A third season is in production and set to premiere in March 2027, with Mike Colter and Finn Jones joining the third season as Luke Cage and Iron Fist, also reprising their roles from the Netflix series.
  1. Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen: A horror-thriller series created by Haley Z. Boston, who serves as the series showrunner and who is also an executive producer along with the Duffer Brothers. The story follows a bride-to-be and her wedding guests as they slowly realize a dark, supernatural force is tied to the upcoming ceremony. The cast includes Camila Morrone and Adam DiMarco as the couple. The series focuses on psychological tension and impending doom. It was released on Netflix on March 26.
  1. Jo Nesbo’s Detective Hole: A crime drama adaptation based on the bestselling Harry Hole novels by Jo Nesbø. The series stars Tobias Santelmann as detective Harry Hole, a brilliant but troubled Oslo investigator. Produced as a Nordic noir international co-production, it follows Hole solving brutal murder cases while battling alcoholism and personal demons. The series premiered on Netflix on March 26.
  1. The Comeback Season 3: The long-awaited continuation of the HBO comedy-drama returns with Lisa Kudrow as Valerie Cherish. Created by Michael Patrick King and Kudrow, the series satirizes Hollywood, reality TV, and aging in the entertainment industry. Season 3 follows Valerie attempting another chaotic return to relevance in a drastically changed media landscape. Season 3 of The Comeback premiered on HBO on March 22.
  1. For All Mankind Season 5: The fifth season of the scifi drama series created by Ronald D. Moore, Matt Wolpert, and Ben Nedivi. The series dramatizes an alternate history depicting “what would have happened if the global space race had never ended” after the Soviet Union succeeds in the first crewed Moon landing ahead of the United States. The title is inspired by the lunar plaque left on the Moon by the crew of Apollo 11, which reads, in part, “We Came in Peace for All Mankind”. The main ensemble returns, including Joel Kinnaman, Wrenn Schmidt, Cynthy Wu, Coral Peña, Edi Gathegi, and Toby Kebbell. New cast members include Mireille Enos, Costa Ronin and Sean Kaufman. The story picks up in the early 2010s, years after the events of Season 4. Mars – now centered around the growing settlement “Happy Valley” – has evolved into a fully functioning colony with thousands of residents. Tensions escalate between the Martian settlers building a new society and Earth governments trying to reassert control. The season shifts the series from Cold War space rivalry to a political and cultural conflict between Earth and Mars, with Mars increasingly acting like an independent world. Season 5 premiered on Apple TV on March 27. Prior to the fifth-season premiere, the series was renewed for a sixth and final season, set to premiere in 2027.
  1. Bait: A crime-action thriller series created by and starring Riz Ahmed. It follows a struggling British Pakistani actor as he auditions for the role of James Bond amid public backlash and family relationships. Also starring in the series are Guz Khan, Aasiya Shah, Sheeba Chaddha, Sajid Hasan, Ritu Arya, Weruche Opia, Maxine Peake, Rafe Spall, Soni Razdan, and Himesh Patel. Bait had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, and was released on March 25 on Prime Video.
