Six films to see:
- The Bride!: This gothic romance, directed and written by Maggie Gyllenhaal, reimagines the Frankenstein myth. The film stars Jessie Buckley as the Bride, alongside Christian Bale, Annette Bening and Penélope Cruz. The story follows a resurrected woman created as a companion for Frankenstein’s monster, leading to a violent, rebellious journey. It was released in theaters on March 6.
- Hoppers: The newest Pixar animated film. This scifi comedy is directed by Daniel Chong, with voice roles from Piper Curda, Bobby Moynihan and Jon Hamm. The story centers on a young woman who can “hop” her consciousness into robotic animals to solve environmental problems. Produced by Pixar Animation Studios, it was released by Disney on March 6 and became one of Pixar’s strongest original openings in years.
- War Machine: This scifi action film is directed, co-produced, and co-written by Patrick Hughes. It stars Alan Ritchson, Dennis Quaid, Stephan James, Jai Courtney, Esai Morales, Keiynan Lonsdale, and Daniel Webber. The film follows a near-future military experiment involving advanced AI warfare technology that spirals out of control. War Machine was released globally on Netflix on March 6, after a limited theatrical run.
- Reminders of Him: This romantic drama film is directed by Vanessa Caswill and based on the novel by Colleen Hoover. It stars Maika Monroe, Tyriq Withers and Lauren Graham. The film tells the emotional story of a woman released from prison who tries to reconnect with her daughter while confronting past trauma. Reminders of Him was released in theaters on March 13.
- The Gates: A thriller film written and directed by John Burr, starring Mason Gooding, Algee Smith, Keith Powers and James Van Der Beek. The film is Van Der Beek’s final film role before his death. The plot follows three friends who witness a murder while passing through a gated suburban community, forcing them into a dangerous cover-up. The film premiered in Los Angeles and was released in theatres in the US on March 13.
- Slanted: A body horror-comedy film written and directed by Amy Wang. The film stars Shirley Chen as a Chinese-American teenager who undergoes an experimental ethnic modification surgery to try and fit in at school, with Mckenna Grace playing her new identity. Fang Du, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, and Amelie Zilber provide supporting roles. The film premiered at the South by Southwest Film & TV Festival last year as part of the Narrative Feature Competition. Slanted was released in theatres in the US on March 13.
Six series to see:
- Vladimir: A comedy drama series adapted from Julia May Jonas’ novel of the same name. The show stars Leo Woodall and Rachel Weisz. It follows a literature professor whose stable life unravels when she becomes obsessed with a charismatic colleague, leading to escalating emotional and psychological tension. The series blends dark comedy with psychological drama and was released on March 5 on Netflix.
- One Piece season 2: The second season of the fantasy adventure series developed by Matt Owens and Steven Maeda. The series is a live-action adaptation of the 1997 Japanese manga series One Piece by Eiichiro Oda, who serves as a creative consultant for the television series. It is produced by Kaji Productions and Shueisha, who also publishes the manga. The series stars Iñaki Godoy, Emily Rudd, Mackenyu, Jacob Romero Gibson, Taz Skylar, and Mikaela Hoover as the Straw Hat Pirates. Season 2 of One Piece continues the journey of Monkey D. Luffy and the Straw Hat crew as they leave the East Blue behind and enter the dangerous and legendary Grand Line. The season is introducing new key characters like Tony Tony Chopper and Princess Vivi. Season 2 was released on Netflix on March 10. The third season, titled The Battle of Alabasta, is already in development and expected to premiere in 2027.
- Scarpetta: A crime thriller series developed by Liz Sarnoff and based on Patricia Cornwell’s bestselling Kay Scarpetta novels. It stars Nicole Kidman as Dr. Kay Scarpetta, a forensic pathologist who uses forensic technology to solve crimes. The series also stars Bobby Cannavale, Jamie Lee Curtis, Simon Baker, Rosy McEwen, Jacob Lumet Cannavale, Hunter Parrish, and Ariana DeBose. Kidman and Curtis also serve as executive producers alongside Cornwell and Sarnoff. The series premiered on Prime Video on March 11. A second season is in production.
- DTF St. Louis: A dark comedy-drama series created by Steven Conrad and starring Jason Bateman, David Harbour, Linda Cardellini, Richard Jenkins, Joy Sunday, Arlan Ruf, and Peter Sarsgaard. The seven-part series is about a love triangle between three adults experiencing middle-age malaise, which leads to one of them ending up dead. Two detectives investigate and learn the crime is connected to a dating app called “DTF St. Louis”, which enables married couples to have affairs. The series is presented in a nonlinear narrative, with episodes often revisiting previous scenes to reveal their place in the overall chronology of events. DTF St. Louis premiered on HBO Max on March 1st in the US and on March 2nd in Europe.
- Young Sherlock: A mystery origin series created by Matthew Parkhill and developed by Guy Ritchie and Matthew Parkhill. It is inspired by Andrew Lane’s Young Sherlock Holmes book series, itself a pastiche of Arthur Conan Doyle’s original Sherlock Holmes stories. The series stars Hero Fiennes Tiffin as a 19-year-old Sherlock Holmes, with Dónal Finn as James Moriarty and Colin Firth and Joseph Fiennes in supporting roles. The story follows Sherlock’s first major case at Oxford, where a murder draws him into a wider conspiracy. Young Sherlock premiered on March 4 on Prime Video. A second season is reportedly in production.
- Rooster: A comedy series created by Bill Lawrence and Matt Tarses, and starring Steve Carell in the lead role, alongside Danielle Deadwyler, Phil Dunster, Charly Clive, Lauren Tsai, and John C. McGinley. This campus-set comedy series follows a writer whose life spirals after complicated relationships within his academic environment. It mixes satire and family drama, with themes of generational conflict and personal failure. Rooster premiered on March 8 on HBO. The series was renewed for a second season.
